Navyofbadgals Posted March 30 Posted March 30 I've seen a good amount of tiktoks about it too and I agree, easily one of the tracks that could've been scrapped cause both lyrically and sonically imo it's a weaker version and that is just not something I associate with Bey. It's just kinda cringy and it becomes even more cringy knowing it's about Jay Z of all people 1

Blumoon Posted March 30 Posted March 30 (edited) She understood and decided it wasnt authentic for HER to beg a woman not to take her man. In THAT situation, this is what she would do. I aint wanna hear Bey beggin no ***** on wax so I salute it. Listen to the original. If you wanna see Bey vulnerable in THAT way, listen to pray You catch Me. Although I think its vulnerable to show ANY emotion unguardedly, even anger. Edited March 30 by Blumoon

Comedor Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Pretty sure Beyoncé's version was approved by Dolly. It's great to see all the discussions around it though.
Rotunda Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Bey's rendition felt unnecessary to me, but I think it's a bit silly to say the woman who features Dolly Parton multiple times on the album missed the point of the song. It was obviously a deliberate choice. It's very understandable if that choice didn't work for you though. 1 1
FSXP Posted March 30 Posted March 30 She performed exactly how it would fit for her. I wouldn't take most of the twitter critiques serious though cause if Beyoncé sung it 100% the same, they would say she's desperate, she's a bird, and that she's begging somebody when her man already cheated. So the conversation would basically remain the same. 3
Last Boy on Earth Posted March 30 Posted March 30 (edited) But it's not supposed to be the same song? Y'all are slow. Or y'all so bothered due to all the slayage that y'all just gasping at straws to have something to drag. Anyways it's embarrassing and y'all should stop Edited March 30 by Last Boy on Earth
Obsession Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Kinda? I mean, I think she intentionally reimagined it the way she wanted, but I think her version is less interesting.

I think this is why a lot people don't like the interpretation. Beyonce ain't about the crying and calling the feds if someone breathes wrong. She's a Black woman, she knows begging doesn't work and has never worked for people like her. She is assertive and going to defend whats hers (which unfortunately Jay-Z). There's a different underlying life experience that many people who don't share, so it won't resonate. Edited March 30 by Namie-Knowles
Nickimeetsatrl Posted March 30 Posted March 30 She reinvented it. My favorite version is the "I would have shot Jolene version"

robattack332 Posted March 30 Posted March 30 (edited) She actually nailed the point of the song! Jolene is about desperation, vulnerability, and insecurity in a relationship. No woman secure w/ her man would ever feel the need to include those lyrics. It's basically confirmation Jay is cheating....pretty vulnerable to share with the world if you ask me Edited March 30 by robattack332

Eternium Posted March 30 Posted March 30 The concept was good (albeit not original), but the execution was not there. It needed significantly more drama and emotion, but it had none of that. This was far and away the biggest disappointment on the album.
Aethereal Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Beyonce did a great job but I still prefer Dolly's version.
