    • No, you must have talent to some degree to have success

I keep seeing this idea in many threads that just because someone has been in the public eye for a very long time, they MUST have talent to some degree.

I think a good example is Selena Gomez. She clearly cannot sing well but people were for some reason fascinated with her personal life and that led to longevity. That along with people liking her personality for some reason has also led to success with her music. As far as I'm concerned though, that's not talent. The GP being interested in your personal life because you're a celebrity is not a talent. Your record label paying radios to pushing your songs is not a talent. I think the whole "you must have talent to some degree" crowd underestimates how many shady things probably go on behind the scenes to push certain individuals.

Britney Spears... Can’t sing, can’t write or compose. But she was white, blonde, pretty and had some dance moves.

Being completely talentless would make it much harder to succeed, but not impossible.  For the girlies who aren’t musically talented (like Selena Gomez), it becomes necessary to have “talent” in other areas, like acting or social media promotion.  In the old days, we saw countless cases of the “actress to singer route” (think Hilary, Demi, Miley, Selena). But nowadays, culture is more "online" than it is "on TV," so we are beginning to witness the rise of this outdated model being appropriated by social media influencers, like Addison Rae or Heidi Montag, who, despite having no musical talent, have managed to use their influence as social media stars to cultivate sizable fanbases who are eager to stream their music.

You just need a pretty face and connections doesn't matter if you can't carry a tune.

Britney Spears is the biggest teenage pop star of all time. Aside her dance moves which is not exactly a musical talent, she has no talent and she was mega successful. So , yes!

Britney Spears (Selena started acting on Disney before becoming a singer) is the biggest example.

Nowadays people are jealous of true talents thats why most famous people now are mid and influencers

Selena, Britney, Cardi, most but not all K-pop groups, most male artists and rappers, etc.  Most of these people have *something* that makes people want to pay attention to them, but it’s never talent.

Also, it’s not considered “cool” for male artists to show talent.  For example, some of the worst rappers can actually SING and you’d never know it because of purposely horrible auto-tune.  Even male pop artists add vocal effects to make themselves sound worse.  Make it make sense.

This.  It's possible for anyone to get a big hit or two, but you have to have genuine talent to cultivate a long career with a strong foundation.

All sorts of people have been in the industry without talent. I don't think you can become a MPG or MPB without talents but there have been some who have tried and failed.

The biggest male acts currently are Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran, Drake and the previous ones consisted of Justin Timberlake, Usher, Eminem, Robbie Williams, 50 Cent. All of them are talented and showcase that as well.

this is literally just another "name artist you don't like" thread trying to masquerade as something more sophisticated. which is funny because the question being asked is actually really dumb.

Selena started out on Barney the Dinosaur, then Disney and voice acting.
Britney was on the 90s Mickey Mouse Club.
In some cases you can have all the talent in the world and no one will even notice you.

Plus she’s got plenty of songwriting credits under her belt for her own songs and songs recorded by others.

And most recently:

It bothers them that she’s one of the most successful artists of all time clearly.

Please educate yourselves before embarrassing yourselves. Britney was signed based on her singing alone. The label didn’t know she could dance until they showed up to the bomt set. Besides dancing which is 100% a musical talent, she has the X factor, star power and a vision on how to present her visual art to the world which has obviously worked. Her writing credits may be scarce for the few she does have are some of her discography highlights.

On the other side of the coin, you could have all the talent in the world (or whatever your metric for talent is) and not be as successful 🤷‍♀️

Is social media promotion a talent though? Its not like Selena is single-handedly running all her accounts. I'm sure she has a team of PR folks and marketing professionals telling her to do this or do that. As for the social media influencers of today, its honestly like...just be hot (and get lucky that the algorithm pushes your content). Like but is being hot a talent?

No tbh. You have to have at least minimal talent to go anywhere

There are a lot of aspects to being an entertainer that don't have to do with musical talent (e.g., working a camera, being relatable in interviews, USING charisma/charm, etc.). In that sense, you need some kind of talent to survive in the industry.

I say this as a kpop stan - a lot of the most popular members in very successful kpop groups rely on charm as their main talent :eli:.
