lillavend3r Posted February 6 Posted February 6 They are absolutely right Jenna Ortega ain't latina. Although we don't claim Nasty Peluso since she's busy trying to be a spaniard 2 1
Johnny Cash Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Gringos better save that chart so we don't have to explain this over and over 1

Junipero Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Half of the American ATRL community will be in shambles. /s Yeah, I always knew that "Latino" in a US American context is different than "Latino" in a Latin American context.
satellites.™ Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Not Becky G catching the stray. They should do Xtina and Cameron Diaz.

ATRL Moderator Azulito Posted February 6 ATRL Moderator Posted February 6 "Latino" in the US has a different meaning in the US vs LATAM the same way "America" has a different meaning in English vs Spanish. Why is this so hard to understand for some people? 1
Great808 Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Latino means someone that lives or is born from south of the border I don’t understand what’s so hard about that to understand for some. It’s also a really pointless term when alot of the ppl and ESPECIALLY the celebrities are just White ppl with maybe a dash of Black or Native in them.

dinorhino Posted February 6 Posted February 6 1 hour ago, Taylena said: Anya Taylor-Joy more latina than Selena or Becky G? Yes? She was actually raised in a Latin American country (partially), has citizenship of a Latin American country (Argentina) and is fluent in the language. Are you trying to say she's not latina because she looks whiter than Selena and Becky G? Lol. 4 1

Why is this so hard to understand for some people? You need to tell American Hispanics that because they don't believe that; they believe they are one and the same as actual Latinos raised in Latin America. Same thing for white Americans who think they're exactly the same as people from Europe just because they have an ancestor who used to live in the same country, i.e. white Americans of Irish descent thinking they are just like people actually raised in Ireland and have anything of relevance in common with them What Americans often don't realise is that they see culture as genetic and most of the world doesn't see it that way including people in Latin America, hence the chart. Of all the ethnicities to occupy, being Latino is the most divorced from any particular ancestral group and has everything to do with lived experiences in that culture (not a diaspora culture) 1 hour ago, bliaz said: ¿Y la Rosalía? People keep memeing about Rosalía not being Latina but she actually has a Cuban great grandparent so by American logic she is Latina. Edited February 7 by dinorhino 2 1

They don't understand how different cultures are in every country No they also think speaking Spanish precludes you from being white even if you're Spain. Spaniards in US census are classified as racial minorities (White Hispanic). In general they being Latino is an ancestry because the overwhelming majority of American Latinos are mestizo~indigenous Mexicans so they associate being "brown" to being Latino even though Mexico has white Mexicans like the boxer Canelo (which American Latinos would be very hesitant to call Mexican, if at all) The weird ass racialisation Americans have and how they're so oblivious to how stupid it is when talking to people from other countries, especially ones that are from the places their identity has roots in, is weird as ****
