Digitalism Posted January 17 Posted January 17 (edited) People saying that music criticism is dying are hilarious to me Losers like Fantano are making millions because people want more pretentious critics Pitchfork died because it went mainstream not because people don't care about critics anymore. OrgVisual Posted January 17 Posted January 17 They were one of the last few ones who didn't suck up to big fanbases 1 2
NEX Posted January 17 Posted January 17 Sad day for music journalism. Loved p4k particularly for shining light on a lot of artists that other publications don't review. I guess what's gonna happen to them is what happened to 538. They now have a special section on ABC website, but they are a shell of their former selves and it's simply not the same experience. F**k corporations! 1

Kinda true. Going softer didn't do them any good. If they kept dragging hard they'd be getting a lot more clicks
SupremeGoddess Posted January 17 Posted January 17 (edited) honestly? good. they had some terrible, aggravating and highly critical reviews that were both harsh and mean and highly disrespectful to the artists they never cared about being good journalists or critics, they were mostly pretentious pissed off failed musicians who had to conduct their anger to other artists and “poptism is dead” is a kii pitchfork was one the most (negatively) critical publications towards pop music for YEARS they digged their own grave. rest in piss NME for the win Edited January 17 by SupremeGoddess 6
shookspeare Posted January 17 Posted January 17 the users crying in here because they might have to form their own opinions now 14
Arrows Posted January 17 Posted January 17 I stopped reading any reviews years ago, I feel confident enough about my own judgement to not care about what some random journalist says. 6
ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted January 17 ATRL Moderator Posted January 17 Nasty people in here celebrating journalists losing their jobs and one of the last remaining voices in music criticism that anyone paid attention to going away. 13 2 2

Venice B Posted January 17 Posted January 17 The end of an era, but that's that they deserve for giving Vespertine a 7.2 2
brenda-walsh Posted January 17 Posted January 17 im gonna miss them, i actually love their review, which seem to be an unpopular opinion on here lol 1
Orsay Posted January 17 Posted January 17 The way I knew the Halsey jokes were coming skdkfjjf she won i feel like they’ll probably continue to exist in some capacity though
Lemon Posted January 17 Posted January 17 I mean, Pitchfork is/was definitely insightful, but 20-25 years ago, they didn’t have a problem giving 0s, which, in my opinion, is not to be taken seriously, just like giving easier 10s is also not the best thing to approach to music/art. However, throughout 2000s, they shined light over many different artists from different music scenes positively and in a substantial way. They actually stayed true to it despite some people thinking they have gone lot “softer”. I appreciate their knowledge and passion for music, but they didn’t always know how to handle outside-music subjectivity. Uncut and MOJO are also some of the pretty good music publications while we are it. And I find them to be even underrated a bit. 3

LoveInStereo Posted January 17 Posted January 17 (edited) Idk why people are making big claims about poptimism or the state of music criticism based on this news. They lost their editorial voice after being acquired. Once they became toothless, the site was still pretentious but no longer joyful. Took itself way too seriously. Some of their old takedowns were camp af. Post Condé, they just seemed stuck up & annoying Edited January 17 by LoveInStereo
Johnny Cash Posted January 17 Posted January 17 Can't say I will miss it. The reviews were pretty terrible and extremely biased when it came to popular artists, they were only vaguely useful for smaller and lesser known artists/bands. Good music journalism will not be affected by this.
