Cameltoe Chariot Posted January 8 Posted January 8 (edited) As a mid-30s gay it's been wild growing up in a time where the only gays on tv were on Will & Grace or Jerry Springer, to then seeing token gays in cable tv shows, to now seeing fully fledged queer and trans pop stars making authentically queer art for the masses. It's also been wild seeing how FAST the first generation after me to grow up in western gay liberation rejected these queer artists. Complaining about their exploration of religious imagery and subtext and saying it's tired or "been done before" by cis female artists is beyond sad. We've literally had the platform for only a decade and y'all are already bored Edited January 8 by Cameltoe Chariot 15 3 2 9
State of Grace. Posted January 8 Posted January 8 (edited) Anyway, I think my "issue" with it is not the religious imagery itself, but his take on it. The last era had him cosplaying as Satan and giving the devil a lap dance and it was great, so him portraying himself as Jesus this era doesn't hit as hard. Although I'm gonna admit that a black artist doing that is still powerful (like when Kanye did it back in his good old days). I would love to see him trying something else that still criticizes religion or address his childhood though. That said, I'm always here for conservatives fuming so get iT sis Edited January 8 by State of Grace. 1

Gelato Posted January 8 Posted January 8 his gimmicks would've been funny 6-7 years ago but humour has moved on since he was trolling on twitter as a barb

Be serious. Madonna did it 40 years ago (well an artistic provocation, not a joke) and every normal people in every catholic country was dancing to that and buying that. No one cares really cares about him, it's actually a very liked and enjoyable character for very normal people in the GP. The boundary between being against conservatives and just need them to exist is weak. At least make a joke about Mohammed too. That' s when you risk your life for real. You’re right. Pop stars mocking Christianity to appear edgy is the safest thing they could ever do. If they want to actually be edgy, they would mock Islam or Judaism, that would actually be controversial. 5

What Madonna did was just as reactionary to conservatives and their weird taboos as what LNX does so I have no idea what point you're trying to make. Neither of their provocation would exist without the people they're trying to provoke. The way he packages it is different because culture has changed in the past 40 years. The point of my post was to say that they didn't shut up about him so how could his response be deemed tired or bait? He's just responding. All the discourse around this man within our own community is seeped in internalized homophobia, embarrassment for our own behavior, and respectability politics. Homophobia in America isn't a muslim-run institution so I don't know why he would base an era off of that. Just kind of seemed like you couldn't help but throw in a bigoted jab or you've missed the entire point of his past 2 eras. Big yikes regardless. Edited January 8 by Sheep 7
Strawberry Bubble Posted January 8 Posted January 8 I... don't know how to feel about this. I hope the music is good

mxoonlight Posted January 8 Posted January 8 It’s lame. It was lame with Doja, too. They’re not invoking the imagery to say anything, they’re literally just doing it for the free promo from right wing/hoteps which is why it’s annoying and not worth validating. 1

Also Holiday and Star Walking each have hundreds of millions of streams on Spotify alone. Please tell me how that is flopping? 3

unclefloprry Posted January 8 Posted January 8 I don't know, but his marketing team and the Columbia's payola is amazing. Every time I open Tiktok, a video of him or related to the song appears on my fy. I've never had his face before in the 4 years since I joined the app.
Dolce Vita Posted January 8 Posted January 8 (edited) religious trauma and being lgbtq+ kinda comes hand in hand for many of us so irdgaf if he likes to use religious imagery as an aesthetic. with that being said, it’s kind of a easy, safe way to stir up controversy by poking the bear with christianity since right wing nut jobs will see it and provide him the online discourse needed for it to work just like they did with CMBYN. artists constantly reference christian iconography in their visuals or aesthetic choices because it’s a way of provoking an audience whilst also making a statement and it’s a right of passage in some way for pop artists Edited January 8 by Dolce Vita 3

awong918 Posted January 8 Posted January 8 (edited) If it was a pop girl doing it y'all would be like "YASSS MOTHER SLAYYY". It's so weird how gays are so quick to tear down one of their own. I'm excited to see what music he has in store because Montero and Industry Baby are some of the greatest bops in recent memory Edited January 8 by awong918 3 1
