Sometimes, if you give a cold and unwelcoming atmosphere, that's how people will perceive it. Nowhere did I suggest bad manners should be allowed, nor is it being said that Koreans need to "change" their culture, more that this situation could be approached with more warmth, in a country that has well documented instances of people using this senior/junior dynamic in a bad way. If you give off a cold or scary vibe, should you be surprised when people become cold or scared towards you? Maybe Hyoyeon should reflect on why it seems to happen to her.

 

Anyhow, I prefer Jessica's perspective on the sunbae/hoobae relationship. Every senior was a junior once.

she was asked if the juniors would come up and greet her personally, and she simply said that nowadays they don't initiate greetings anymore. but then she basically explained that it's fine because forcing a greeting can be uncomfortable. still, if they happen to pass each other in the hallway and make eye contact, the junior should at least smile or nod, which they apparently don't. in the end, she also said she doesn't initiate greetings either unless she sees and makes eye contact with the person

Either way it doesn't change anything. If you give a cold and uninviting atmosphere, it's only going to make those interactions even more uncomfortable. The text you provided also reaffirms that she makes no effort to help juniors feel comfortable in that situation and just ignores them unless they come into her line of sight

 

Like I said, other senior idols approach this in a different way and don't seem to encounter this problem she keeps talking about, which is interesting.
