1. Adele - 2011

2. Eminem - 2002

3. Britney - 2000

4. Lady Gaga - 2009

5. Taylor Swift - 2014

Honorable mention to Norah Jones and Mariah Carey.

Britney in 2000 was nowhere near as big as Taylor 2023/2014, Adele 2011, Lady Gaga 2009, or Mariah 2005.

Why is no one mentioning Katy Perry 2010?  She legit was rivalling MJ that year.

It’s probably because her success was heavily concentrated in singles, rather than in album sales or touring, and because the Teenage Dream era as a whole was split across multiple years (so the individual years themselves were smaller). The correlation with Michael Jackson really only exists in terms of number ones from the album, not in the other aspects of an artist’s consumption, where MJ also led the industry at his peak.

I would argue Katy was an industry leader with Teenage Dream tbh.  What she did has never been reached, not even during the streaming era where it’s easy to rig the charts.

Leaving your device streaming on headphones all day is never going to be the same as buying an album. Stop posting about streaming fraud if you want us to take those numbers seriously.

Top 0.001% listeners = top <1100 of her monthly listeners

Screenshot-20231130-153343-com-android-c

Top 0.5% listeners = top <550k listeners

Of course top 1000 listeners would have ridiculous numbers but that's very small minority of her total numbers/listeners.

Even if you assume that top 1000 have 290k minutes (~70k streams) each, that would be equal to 70M streams.

That would be equal to only 0,3% of Taylor's total 28B streams.

And that’s fine, I don’t even disagree that she was leading the industry in some ways, but she just wasn’t really pulling the same overall units that many of the other artists mentioned in here were, and it was across 2010-2012 instead of all at once. I’m just offering a possible explanation as to why she hasn’t been mentioned much; nothing against her or her immense success during that era.

In 2000, she became the best-selling teen act of all time. :ace:

Eminem in 2002. #1 Movie, #1 Album, #1 Song on every chart. Sold 1.3 Million pure albums in 1 week. 6 weeks straight #1 and 5 Massive singles that charted for months globally. Best selling album of the year and made him the biggest artist of the entire decade across all genres.

This thread is specifically about one single year, so definitely Taylor 2023

Adele's peak was spread out throughout 2011-2012 and 2015

Gaga, 2009-2011

etc.

Stars aligned all at once for Taylor in 2023 that even if you ignore 2022 or 2014, her 2023 alone would still be the biggest (although of course it's that big because of her 2008-2022)

It's kind of like Madonna in 1990 where every metric lined up massively from biggest album (Immaculate Collection) to phenomenal single/video/live performance (Vogue) to record breaking tour/iconic look (Blond Ambition and the cone bras) to worldwide media coverage/controversy (Madonna vs The Vatican and the Pope) to record breaking controversial music video (Justify My Love), etc.

Yes she was:rip: The revisionist history of Britney is crazy. Cuz she was definitely on that level. I was there and Britney mania was the same as all the acts you just listed.:biblio:
she ain’t as big as taylor is now, but the rest is true. And she was bigger than 1989. hence why Opps I did it again outsold taylor 1989 album twice over. And she did it with pure album sales 😆

The year an artist monopolized the biggest music market getting half of the top 10 best selling albums of the year

The year an artist achieved the best selling tour of all time in just an year

The year an artist achieved the highest grossing concert movie of all time after just one weekend

The year an artist became TIME’s person of the year for the first time EVER

The year an artist sold over 30 MILLION units worldwide for the first time

The year an artist named Taylor Swift conquered the world

This year a woman sold more albums than anyone this century, got more streams than anyone this century, got the biggest tour of all time and also the biggest concert film of all time. That's a pretty strong case.

Lady Gaga 2010 is biggest overall.

Edit: I forgot about Briney in 2000, she was definitely the biggest

Obviously Gaga

Posted

Adele in 2015. Pretty sure it sold 70% of its sales that year alone on top of the slayage of 21 recurrent domination and Hello smashing worldwide

Why are people saying Gaga?  Taylor 2023 eclipses any year Gaga has ever had.  Taylor sold more albums, had more hits, bigger tour, bigger celeb, hotter act, more fans in ONE YEAR than any year of Gaga.  And Taylor did it with talent and music alone—not over the top costumes and provocation.

1989 was released in the digital age/streaming age.  You cannot compare its sales to the climate from which Oops! benefited.  1989 was the biggest selling album of 2014.  Oops! WAS NOT the biggest selling album of 2000.  1989 yielded more hits.  1989 had a bigger tour.  1989’s follow-up sold a million 1st wk copies too.  Britney fans are once again exaggerating how big Britney was (she was not that big statistically lol, just a teen star like Hannah Montana of her era).
