The Barbie hate on this site makes no sense. The movie was funny, campy, and different in a sea of generic CGI action movies.

You think a bunch of Ava Max stans know anything about cinema?

Not surprised, the movie was mid. They hyped the script to high heavens, only for it to be a generic empowerment movie.

it turned out that the Barbie movie is not for the gheys but for the straight girl

And of course ATRL will be sexist.

Well, in that case, girls deserved better than that mid movie :sadviolin:

The average ATrler has on average a 7th grade education level so I wouldn’t expect members here to understand the intricate details and meaning of this film.

Actually, the Barbie movie is anything but intricate. The message it intends to deliver was so watered down that it felt uninteresting. I am still Team Barbie, but it's okay to admit that that movie is not anything special. That doesn't mean I'm against the message it conveyed though. :michael:

I think there's been a cognitive dissonance among gays cause Barbie was seen as this huge party where gays are also invited and part of the celebration of femininity. Then turns out it's really just for women exclusively with nothing in it that's emotionally powerful or relatable for gays, aside from enjoying the visuals, fashion and music.

So maybe that's why gays are now belittling this movie when it was never meant for them in the first place. It's usually male ATRLers that I see hating on it or calling it overrated.

OUUUUUU clock that tea!

the "it wasn't made for you!!!" excuse when ppl don't like something is so funny :rip: maybe it is just not that good? bc if it were even the one who didn't like it would see it's importance but that's not the case here.

it was overhyped and they lost the chance of actually doing something amazing bc everyone was here for it...

You sound like someone who should see more movies before jumping in here.

Just watched this last night for the first time and….yeh it wasn’t good. I wanted to like this so badly too ugh, I mean the first half of the movie was cute but the second half felt clunky and dragged on.

The “villains” were annoyingly dumb, the inspiring speeches were flat and felt forced in, Sasha and Gloria’s storyline kind of went nowhere, the reveal of the Mattel creator at the end felt so tacked on.

Visually it was still a stunning movie but the characters felt so…hollow. Barbie was boring tbh, Ken was kind of the only star of the movie :skull:

Y'all act like being quotable is the only "cultural impact" a movie can have though.

The plot was giving "privileged white feminist who took a gender studies 101 course and now believes she's oppressed and needs to be a savior" teas.

Time is the ultimate truth teller and this movie is not it.

Or some people just don’t like it? Here’s a female perspective on how the film fell short:

Mario was the better movie for the culture.

I literally can’t believe the number of people who have tried to say that the quote is from the film when we’ve got so many posts (with receipts) saying it’s from Aqua :gaycat6:

I’m not really adding anything new to the discourse but I do find the new points (since my last post) about Ken actually being the star, and that America to actually be the narrative driver to be hitting home. Other than that, the film did feel very “safe” which is why it has no replay value for me. It didn’t hold up a difficult enough mirror for society (aka posed nothing new). As previously said, it would’ve been seen in a more positive light if made 10 years prior.

Watched it again last night. So many quotable moments:

“Do you guys ever think about dying?”

“Yeah, because actually my job, it’s just beach.”

"She thinks I'm a fascist? I don't control the railways or the flow of commerce!"

"We mothers stand still so our daughters can look back and see how far they have come."

It’s going to be funny seeing this forum seethe if Greta wins the screenplay Oscar.

I will mostly be seething because of their egregious attempt to pass off a film adapted from one of the ten highest grossing intellectual properties in history as “original.” The titular role is literally a trademark. I am vehemently opposed to its placement in that category. Wouldn’t take any pleasure in Greta winning for what would be by far the worst of her three nominated screenplays, either. :emofish:

And we all know it’s only being campaigned as “original” because that’s the easier category this year. If it were the other way around, they’d definitely have called it “adapted.” No standards whatsoever, just whatever’s easier to get a trophy. It’s all so transparent.

Barbie’s only Oscar should be for “What Was I Made For.” :michael:

Ok, let’s calm down because Barbie wasn’t exactly high art cinema.

OT: I agree with the sentiment that the movie is not very rewatchable. Third act is so boring and the plot is nonexistent

Yall keep making the issue that it wasn’t progressive enough, but that honestly has nothing to do with it. It simple wasn’t a strong enough story.
