Psyduck Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 Heavy-handed corporate white feminism is only quotable when you're mocking it, which the movie does the opposite of. It's very telling that the most memorable parts of the movie that seem to have caught on like "Kenough" are about the male characters. 1
Karla Cabello Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 cause it is a barbie ad embellished as a movie 1

Barbie felt about a decade behind the times, and didn’t say anything new. This says it so much for me. I left the cinema thinking “meh, this isn’t new,” but its message did get to a lot of straight men via the advertising spend and hype creation. I doubt the film will be very remembered for its art form in 10 years. The moment and frenzy will be, undoubtedly, but the film itself wasn’t trailblazing enough. The only enduring moment I’ve seen from its content is the gheys and the “I’m kenough” merch, which is cringe tbh

It was an event but it will be forgotten.
ICLDXU4HS Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 It wasn’t a funny movie, either. I’ll rewatch Romy and Michele‘s High School Reunion, Legally Blonde, Miss Congeniality, the early 2000s Charlie‘s Angels movies (etc.) over it any day. 3

Butters Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 (edited) It's characters (mainly Ken), set design, and music are definitely what leaves an impact vs the writing/script itself. It's a very 2023 movie, I think people will remember it for a long time. It's certainly no Avatar if that's what you're implying Edited December 20, 2023 by Butters
bad guy Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 “Kenough” ”Mojo dojo casa house” ”I’m just Ken” All exist. 1 1
poki Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 Mojo dojo casa house I'm Kenough Sublime Bhahahahaha Basically everything Ken did. Ryan carried this movie hard.
blackoutbritney Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 This revisionist history w Barbie is so annoying. Why does everyone hate fun 4

Barbie is pulling from decades of products and recognizable media.
poki Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 Margot low key didn't do anything in this entire movie if you think about it. America is the real main character. 1
Da Vinci Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 Serious question: WHAT was the last quotable movie in the last decade? Barbie will definitely be remembered. Even with just Margot's looks and fashion in the movie, she'll forever be the definitive live action Barbie so there's that. Heck this will be the definitive live action Barbie movie, period, so as long as the doll/brand will be relevant, this movie will be too. It's only been 6 months 2
poki Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 Hi Barbie / Hi Ken existed WAY before this movie.

No dig at Avatar, just pointing out that we view it as largely lacking cultural impact despite being the highest grossing movie ever. And Barbie is definitely not going down that path even if it doesnt have quotable lines!

It was the pop culture moment of 2023 and will be remembered forever. I think there's been a cognitive dissonance among gays cause Barbie was seen as this huge party where gays are also invited and part of the celebration of femininity. Then turns out it's really just for women exclusively with nothing in it that's emotionally powerful or relatable for gays, aside from enjoying the visuals, fashion and music. So maybe that's why gays are now belittling this movie when it was never meant for them in the first place. It's usually male ATRLers that I see hating on it or calling it overrated. 6
HausOfPunk Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 It was fun to watch the first time but I don't think I'd ever watch it again. 1

Billionaire Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 This whole thing online with everybody being on the hype train for a song, artist show or movie just to go "it wasn't good anyway" a few months later is so ******* annoying. Some of y'all are really a bunch of sheep who need other people to make your decisions for you 3 1
Taylor fanboy Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 Now close your eyes, and feel This is Barbie’s dream-house, not Ken’s dream-house. This world is so… male. Do you ever think about dying?
