When we talk about units, we mean album units, not record sales.

US_album_equivalent_unit.png

10M digital song sales and 1.5B streams are equal to 1M album sales. This method aims to collect main consumption methods from different periods under a similar approach and produce comparable results.

So when your numbers converted to album units,

Taylor - 40M

Adele - 20M

Gaga - 17M

And when it comes to reach, the gap is even bigger thanks to advantages of the streaming era. So your claim of Adele reaching more people doesn't make much sense.

It doesn't work like that. Streaming era made markets like LATAM and Asia bigger indeed but it made markets like Europe decline.

Big albums used to sell 2 million or 3 million in the UK but they barely reach 1M nowadays. Big albums in Germany used to go 3 Platinum or even 5 Platinum but even biggest albums don't go multi platinum there nowadays. Same for France and rest of Europe. Same for Japan etc.

Global music market for top music didn't grow like that.

https://chartmasters.org/top-album/

Check yourself with different time periods.

Thank you for a nice, elegant and educational response.

But I'd have to disagree about the Europe part. No matter what big decline album sales have had in Europe, LATAM and ASIA along with Eastern Europe EXPLODED after streaming took off so all those three territories make up for whatever loss Europe has had.

None of it neglects that Gaga and Adele's peaks weren't measured in half of the world accurately, especially their single sales.

Do you really know what is total units and SPS?

But what difference does that make? If she sold that much according to an unofficial source like Chartmasters then she should cross Adele and Gaga's 30M record sales on IFPI (which also incorporate streaming) with ease :toofunny2:

And IFPI is an official organisation. So my point still stands.

Until Taylor doesn't reach 30M sold records according to the IFPI (which is something Taylor fans always flaunt whenever she's #1 there) then she's not even on par with the commercial peaks of Adele and Gaga.

That said, it's completely two different kind of peaks. Taylor is peaking while having 243 songs released while Gaga and Adele had 20 and 26 songs :rip: She's literally peaking when audiences can consume 14 of her albums. Gaga and Adele peaked when audiences could consume two. These comparisons make no sense.

Let's just have IFPI acknowledge this first.

:bibliahh::rip:

IFPI never added up album and single sales together. They use SPS for their the global artist chart :bibliahh: this “record sales” thing is never acknowledged by IFPI and they never used or mentioned it. According to your logic Carly Rae Jepson was the biggest artist of 2012 cause Call me maybe outsold 21. Jesus, the conversation must be ended here :dies:

Well either way if they use SPS then Taylor's numbers will be reflected there. However, they never used SPS back when the others peaked so it's incomparable.

Furthermore, Taylor has gained new fans. Those fans have 14 albums they can stream and buy. When Adele or Gaga were discovered by people in 2009 and 2011 they had two albums each to be purchased and consumed. They can't be compared.

Yes, she is nonstop releasing. And isn’t the thing she keeps releasing called “music”? :rip: Drake and Bad Bunny released more albums than her in the past 6-7 years and I don’t see they became as big as Taylor?

They're just behind her... if anything Bad Bunny is bigger than them because even though he's newer he posts similar numbers AND he sings in spanish.

Taylor's current monstrous peak isn't because of the music, it's because she's kept herself at the forefront of pop culture by releasing nonstop for years.  Gaga's peak was huge cuz her music was just a little bit different than everybody else's. Plus the videos catapulted her success.   Adele was huge cuz her music was also different, and she was not your typical pop star.  Midnights is not different than any other Taylor album, so it can't be about the music.

This. Taylor has no song as big as Hello or Someone like you...

According to IFPI’s report, 25 sold 17.4 m units in 2015, which means Adele’s biggest year is just around 20m units. They don’t use SPS before 2013 but you can still use their formula, just 1 album sales add 1/10 total singles sales from that album then you get the album’s SPS. Whatever you use it or not, simply adding up album and single sales is totally nonsense and they never used this “record sales” concept. Again, as I have said, nobody cares how many album you’ve released or you had during you peak. Taylor has country album, folk album, and pop album with different sound to attract different groups of people, and that’s her talent. If anything her and the Beatles’ case is much more impressive cause you’re selling your entire discography rather than just an album. They’re lots of people have one album with astonishing sales number, but how many people can sell their entire discography simultaneously like Taylor and the Beatles during their peak? Keeping gaining new fans 17 years into her career is just another strong proof of her power and I don’t know why you specifically point it out and act like it’s something negative. All in all, Taylor’s 2023 has sold 2x album units than any biggest year of Gaga/Adele along with the 1 billion box office + the biggest tour movie of all time.  No matter how many excuses you create won’t change that. Conversation END:cm:

Blank Space: 3.3B

Hello: 3.1B

Sales:

IFPI 2015:

#8 Blank Space

It’s safe to say Blank Space has already surpassed Hello in the long term

Fact.

She’s a game changer for music industry. I don’t think we’ll see someone else who imposes their conditions in such a competitive market.

I'd say what the user said is correct. Hello came out at the end of 2015 and still managed to score a #7 placement on the year-end list one spot above Blank Space which had the whole year of sales.

Also, Hello went to #1 in 32 countries, Blank Space went #1 in 7 countries. Taylor has never had a song as big as Poker Face or Hello.

It's safe to say you're wrong.

How Taylor Swift Became an Historic Global Supernova Juggernaut Of Epic Proportions

Quote

Let’s talk about Taylor Swift… talk and talk, and talk. What hasn’t already been said? My assigning editor, who did this issue’s staggering, just-the-facts, straight up business piece, has taken to muttering, “Taylor IS Jesus. She’s just like Jesus…,” which might be just a little overstated and blasphemous. But, not since Prince, Michael Jackson or Madonna in their prime has an artist so completely dominated the conversation. Not just pop culture, either; though she shattered past touring records with a billion-dollar single-year trek that could do even bigger numbers next year.

Quote

Peggy Noonan waxed so rhapsodic in the Wall Street Journal about Taylor’s ability to bring people together, to create new business models, to offer a space where people can agree and come together, it was almost like she can walk on water.

Quote

That earth quaking “thing” seems to follow the 33-year old songwriting superstar wherever she goes. When the onsale for this year’s “Eras Tour” turned into a total debacle, it wasn’t merely a software or server problem; it turned into a series of Congressional hearings about ticketing and the concert industry. […] And because she is Taylor Swift, perhaps because so many Congressional and Senatorial grandchildren were disappointed, Washington, D.C., sat up and took notice. Taylor wanted action and resolution; now, things are on the verge of changing for the fans and the artists.

Quote

It’s crazy. And just maybe beatific. It’s hard to say if Taylor – just named TIME’s Person of the Year and now on the cover of PEOPLE as their Most Intriguing – is an agent of the rapture. But quite possibly with all the quiet lifts, the massive shows, the squad goals we can aspire to she may be heaven sent?

A very long article from Pollstar about them basically losing their sh*t marveling over Taylor's 2023…

This is her commercial peak. A tour that will generate over $1.7 billion  (and if she tours in 2025 $2 billion+ ). She will be Pollstars #1 highest grossing touring artist when the tour finishes. She is not able to please demand, Millions of fans still on waiting lists.
