Spoiler

28. Tears Dry On Their Own - Cil

Not my favourite listen from my spotify discoveries this year, I only enjoyed 2 songs from this album but lyrically she's done a great job with this from what I remember.

Recommend: Try  //  Leave

27. Amelia - Mimi Webb

Another fun discovery this year, I liked some of what I heard but didn;t feel the need to revisit outside of a few songs i've recommended, I see potential though, her ballads are great!

Recommend: Last Train To London  //  Is It Possible  //  Remind You

26. Clique - Citizen Queen

I've been following this group for a while and they've released some great songs and covers, however after finally dropping an album I was left a tad disappointed. I'll listen again soon but I wanted a more adult, mature approach than what was offered. They're young so there's still time, and the pre-singles were well selected.

Recommend: Replay  //  Waste My Time  //  Break Up

25. That! Feels Good! - Jessie Ware

Wanted to check her out for a while after her last album was so highly acclaimed, unfortunately not the sound for me but I did enjoy a few tracks and will be sticking around for future tracks.

Recommend: That! Feels Good!  //  Begin Again  //  Pearls

24. Bebe - Bebe Rexha

Loved the bops on this but i'm still perplexed as to why she isn't using her voice to its full extent bar some bridges? It's a cute pop album, but again found myself only going back to a few songs.

Recommend: I'm Not High, I'm In Love  //  Satellite  //  Blue Moon

23. Higher Than Heaven (Deluxe) - Ellie Goulding

THIS was a surprise listen, because i've never vibed with her old material, but this is a solid pop album and had me adding some songs to my heavy rotation playlist, genuinely surprised I enjoyed this and now i'm kinda rooting for her.

Recommend: Easy Lover (feat. Big Sean)  //  Higher Than Heaven  //  Let It Die

22. as things grow - Kyra

Very, very late discovery but my gosh does this woman have PIPES. She's an up-and-comer in the UK scene and I highly recommend everyone listen to 'Sweet Mahogany' NOW.

Recommend: sweet mahogany  //  need more time, pt. 2

21. A Kid From Yerevan - Full Crate

One of my fave new discoveries this year, it's a very chill vibe, very cohesive and the songs were all pretty good, he also has a great voice. I need to do my research on his background but i'm definitely looking forward to what he does next and enjoying this project when i'm in the mood.

Recommend: Text Me When You Get Home  //  Before U Go  //  Do They Know

20. Feed The Beast - Kim Petras

She serves bops, her voice is great, so my expectations were high, foolish of me to expect a 'Heart to break' level explosive sound, nonetheless this was a decent effort. Let's just say I get why another album was dropped soon after. I'm still rooting for her, but these song choices were a let down personally.

Recommend: Hit It From The Back  //  Revelations  //  uhoh

19. JAGUAR II - Victoria Monét

I was impatient for this since I didn't want an album split after thoroughly enjoying Jaguar (I), and I must admit I think the first is way better than this; huge Vic fan but I don't get the acclaim, grammy noms and 'Best of 2023' lists this has been making because while this is good, it isn't her best, and it really just feels like much needed acknowledgement for her talents overall (finally). Something was missing here, can't put my finger on it but the album didn't feel super cohesive and I just didn't want to revisist it as much as i'd hoped, I just feel like it shouldn't be called Jaguar II if it is so disjointed from the first in my opinion, there was far too much time between projects and the vision was lost, and this holds on its own and should have been its own thing; that said there are some high highs and i'm so happy for her success. Production on this, as is usual for her, is excellent.

Recommend: On My Mama  //  Alright  //  Smoke (feat. Lucky Daye)

18. BB/ANG3L - Tinashe

Tinashe is soooo hit or miss for me it's crazy, LOVED 'Songs for You' but this is kinda meh in comparison, and like Vic, I hate the need to split projects, just release the whole damn thing and move on? I gravitated to the bops and that was pretty much it, because upbeat, fun Tinashe is more exciting, sorry to say; I don't care for the slower jams, everything just starts to sound the same and there's no vocal risks or anything interesting that makes me want to hit repeat. I'm not even looking forward to the next follow up that much unfortunately but maybe it'll be a pleasant surprise?

Recommend: Needs  //  Talk To Me Nice  //  Uh Huh

17. REVAMPED - Demi Lovato

Feel bad putting an album full of remakes on this list but dammit I used to love rock Demi and her return to the genre makes me so happy, and this was a welcomed surprise! I love HA and this CFTS rock version is ELITE and I love it! She nailed this by introducing new runs, highnotes and even features to shake it up a bit and I ate it up with a spoon. Even Skyscraper, which I never would have imagined a rock version for, is decent. Really hope she sticks to this sound and doesn't go back to pop, yes production could be better on some of these but vocally, she's at her best.

Recommend: Cool for the Summer (Rock Version)  //  Heart Attack (Rock Version)  //  Skyscraper (Rock Version)

16. The Age of Pleasure - Janelle Monáe

Janelle somehow collected an emotion and vibe into a jar, converted into lyrics and sound, and released it with this album. If you're in just the right mood, this is such a happy, chill vibe and so extremely cohesive. She nailed this, and hearing her describe the making of it and her lifestyle recently in interviews, she also describes it perfectly and it all makes sense. Love putting this on when i'm getting ready and feeling myself, should be far more acclaimed and acknowledged!

Recommend: Haute  //  Paid In Pleasure  //  Lipstick Lover

15. When I Hear Your Name - Maeta

Loved Maeta since seeing her on the 'Terrell Show' on youtube and was really looking forward to this; it's deifintely one you need to re-listen to to really get it, but once you do you're easily enamored by the sheer vocal talent and cool vibe this eludes. There are so many songs I had stuck in my head on random days that forced me to revisit the whole album. I'm so sad I didn't see this get a lot of love and I hope it was successful enough for her to keep going because damn she's good!

Recommend: Cool Cat  //  Kissing New People (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)  //  Through The Night (feat. Free Nationals)

14. In His Mania - Spencer Sutherland

I've known of Spencer but got into this album late, when the deulxe dropped, and what a f*cking voice! The recommended songs espescially are so high energy, cool and have just the right amount of a 'rock' vibe to go with his belts and high notes, it all comes together really well and he pulls of the energy needed behind some of these bops really well. I want to go to a concert and scream these songs out loud, that's the vibeI get from this. Fully impressed and really looking forward to following his career, boys in music are usually so damn boring so this was a treat!

Recommend: Cry  //  B!tch  //  Outrun the Feeling  //  Jealousy

13. In Pieces - Chlöe

This really grew on me, it has some duds and I wish she had a better ear for music and lyrics (and feature artist choices) but the good songs are f*cking GREAT and her voice is incredible both in studio and live! (not everybody has that). She obviously has the charisma and energy to pull off great high energy bops, but to my surprise her slower songs are excellent and deserved way more love. She's only going to mature and get better with time and i'm excitrd to hear her excellent voice on better lyrics going forward.

Recommend: Body Do  //  Feel Me Cry  //  In Pieces  //  Worried

12. SOS - SZA

Loved this from the jump, she fully deserves the acclaim and success she's been getting. I don't love it as much as 'CTRL' as a whole, I only love half the album, but she nailed it with that half and those songs were on repeat for months. SZA doesn't need big vocals and high energy, her raw (RAW) lyrics and mellow emotion coupled by great production is enough to make her soar as she has; i've maybe overplayed my faves from this album but i'm still ranking it high for filling my playlists this year.

Recommend: Blind  //  Low  //  Kill Bill  //  Shirt

11. Silence Between Songs - Madison Beer

After releasing one of the best career debut albums i've ever heard previously I was eager for this, and fortunately she was able to change the sound a bit (mostly production) while keeping the same essence that she's carved for herself and slowly and quietly building her fanbase as well. This is such a good album if you're in the mood for it, the lyrics, the vocals, the softness of her voice, so good! She exudes just the right emtion to make you deeply feel what she's saying, at times it almost sounds like she's crying while singing, yes a lot are slow songs but the melodies chosen make them interesting enough to re-listen too.

Recommend: Envy the Leaves  //  Sweet Relief  //  Home To Another One  //  Spinnin

Spoiler

10. chemistry - Kelly Clarkson

Though this wasn't the aggressive, revengeful divorce album I had hoped for, with belting and scathing lyrics, it was still a serviceable pop album, with tracks that grew on me in time, particularly the ballads. I do wonder whether she was silenced from airing out too much dirty laundry and alas i'm glad she's free and the few upbeat tracks about breakups were some of my faves. She's such an undeniably great vocalist i'd eat up anything she served tbh.

09. Grudges - Kiana Ledé

Love Kiana, her RnB is silky smooth and honest and her voice is really good, she has some great bops that are huge earworms so I've followed her career closely and this album is no exception. It's sexy at times, vulnerable others but overall melts together nicely. There are some haunting songs based on her horrible SA experience that's hard to listen too and I applaud her for speaking up about it in interviews and using music as a tool to 'air out the negative' so to speak, and the bops were on repeat for the better part of this year! She did not disappoint at all :clap3:

08. 3 of Us - FLO

My girls surprised us all with an EP, and as someone who has at lightning speed become a fan of them because or their harmonies and GREAT ear for hits, I was super excited for this! ; this short EP remained on repeat since release, these may seemingly be rejects that didn't make the full LP but they're still pretty solid and it's wise to stay on people's minds with these droplets while working on the LP. They deserve to blow up in the UK/US and I hope they remain humble and grow in maturity with their lyrics in time. Every song on this EP is fantastic except maybe 'Suite Life' that I played a little less because it just didn't connect like the others.

07. Diamonds & Dancefloors - Ava Max

Admittedly not a fan of Ava before this release and I still know nothing about her, but her last project had a handful of pop hits I kept on repeat. THIS ALBUM however, shocked the hell out of me, it is imo the best pop release this year and I have to give her credit, she knows how to pick great tracks. She can sing extremely well on them, brings the energy and sass and even her adlibs are well done. I'm very impressed, it fed my little pop heart, it wasn't cringe lyrically and though there were very few duds, I liked a large majority of the album and kept them on repeat in my playlists all year long even though it was released early in the year, so many choruses that kept coming back to me, well done ms. Ava i'm definitely keeping up with your career now...

06. Feel A Way - Gene Noble

Gene is an extremely underrated vocalist, he has the level of control I see from 'Tori Kelly' for instance, and isn't afraid to sing complicated runs and riffs both in and out of studio. He's also good at emoting sadder songs with a softer candence that works really well. I will always support this man because he's a rare talent and I hope he never stops releasing. This project was excellent, he poured his heart out lyrically and his voice carried it so much. 'Whatever it is' in particular, is one of the best RnB tracks released this year, it's thoughtful, 'cute' lyrically and vocally very impressive, particularly the outro. So impressed. I really hope RnB spaces embrace him more as time passes, and he finds an even stronger fan base so he can continue to fill my ears with his talent.

05. Christmas With Brandy - Brandy

My Queen. Whenever this woman releases, the world stops for me, because the vocal bible is about to bless me with new harmonies, runs and melodies that I know I will have on repeat for months. This is no exception despite being an Xmas release, 6 original xmas songs was such a surprise and i'm so grateful as a long time fan, that she didn't just cover classics and disappear. The originals are all super sweet, very well written, and sung in a way only Brandy and a few talented musicians can emulate. I'm so in love with this voice, and i'm so glad I didn't have to wait YEARS to hear her sing something new; from the sexy, sultry 'Christmas Party for Two' to the covers that outdid many others in my xmas playlists because she updated them to an RnB genre;  I will play these well into 2024, IDGAF!

04. Peace in the Madness - Sipprell

Sipprell is an artist of immense vocal talent, I discovered her late last year and just deep dived into her discography, and fell in love with almost everything I heard. I almost became angry that I didn't discover her sooner; her vocal control is insane, her runs are airy and beautiful and her lyrics in many songs are meaningful and thought-provoking. Her song dedicated to her yet unborn child in particular, 'Already Yours' I had on repeat for MONTHS because of how sweetly it was sung and written. The vocal runs on 'Unravel' are so impressive and lyrics heartfelt, the INCREDIBLE portrayal of almost-desperate longing on 'Wish You Were Here' makes me feel just as sad when singing along because of how well it is written. My god this woman needs to blow up, and I was so happy and excited to hear she was dropping an album despite her small fanbase and reach. I immediately got tickets to see her live in London and sang along to every word and as i'd HOPED, she sings just as exquisitely live as she does in the studio. I really, really, hope she builds a fan base so she's encouraged to keep singing and releasing, as she teased quitting on twitter. My God having her quit now would break my heart.:jonny:

:3rdplace:

tori (deluxe) - Tori Kelly

Tori did exactly what her fanbase has been asking for for years, put that incredible voice on songs a bit more upbeat, and have a bit more fun, with carefree lyrics to match. This is a big breath of fresh air, she sounds happy, sassy, and confident on these, without forgoing her amazing belts and runs. Every song here is welcome, except 'young gun' which felt a tad out of place as the energy didn't match the others and was sang a bit more mellow. I can't wait to hear these live (in person, though the live tracks on the deluxe are excellent and introduce new runs and high notes just when you thought the original was perfect, typical Tori), and support her so she can have the numbers she needs to prove she can release the full LP, which is what I was waiting for instead of this EP. I've been fed a snack with this EP, i'm hungry for the whole dinner now, let's go!

:2ndplace:

Snow Angel - Reneé Rapp

Renee seemingly came out of nowhere with one of my favourite tracks of the year 'Snow Angel', great charismatic and funny interviews and then the full album that had funny, sad, and unapologetic lyrics sung by a powerful voice. This woman can belt!, aided no doubt by her stint in musicals. Several songs grew on me over time and now a large majority of this album are on repeat at various points of the year. 'Poison Poison' is hilarious, especially the outro and she accompanies that humour in tracks like 'Tummy Hurts' that makes you smile as you sing along. I really wanna see her live next year, I'm ready to scream these lyrics out loud, espescially the title track that uncovers such a haunting tale explained in interviews but written lyrically in just a vague enough way that not everyone gets it at first. Well done.

:1stplace:

My 21st Century Blues - RAYE

No doubt my album of the year. This album is sad, upsetting, happy, sexy, brutally raw and honest. My gosh, it's such a rollercoaster but somehow melts together perfectly. Her VOICE, vibrato when she's singing meaningfully, almost operatic at times, belts, all beautifully sung. The production is unique, and aides her voice very well, and her pen writes earworms, clever lines and rhymes some of the most terrifying experiences of her life. I can't praise this album enough, and her rise to stardom as a result, in the UK espescially, as her own singer and not a writer of hits for many others, is a big 'FINALLY' moment! :clap3:

Oh I liked Last Train To London. Not her best ballad imo but she rarely misses her with ballad-y songs in general, and Last Train To London isn't an exception.

The way TikTok overplayed WWIMF? during the Barbie movie release week but somehow i survived it and still sounds fresh until this days. Her 2nd Oscar is really coming! :jonny:

28. Tears Dry On Their Own - Cil

Not my favourite listen from my spotify discoveries this year, I only enjoyed 2 songs from this album but lyrically she's done a great job with this from what I remember.

Recommend: Try  //  Leave

Mimi_Webb_-_Amelia.png

27. Amelia - Mimi Webb

Another fun discovery this year, I liked some of what I heard but didn;t feel the need to revisit outside of a few songs i've recommended, I see potential though, her ballads are great!

Recommend: Last Train To London  //  Is It Possible  //  Remind You

1200x1200bf-60.jpg

Jessie_Ware_-_That!_Feels_Good!_(official_studio_album_cover).png

25. That! Feels Good! - Jessie Ware

Wanted to check her out for a while after her last album was so highly acclaimed, unfortunately not the sound for me but I did enjoy a few tracks and will be sticking around for future tracks.

Recommend: That! Feels Good!  //  Begin Again  //  Pearls

Bebe_Rexha_-_Bebe.png

24. Bebe - Bebe Rexha

Loved the bops on this but i'm still perplexed as to why she isn't using her voice to its full extent bar some bridges? It's a cute pop album, but again found myself only going back to a few songs.

Recommend: I'm Not High, I'm In Love  //  Satellite  //  Blue Moon

ab67616d0000b2737b9e39fd9d0bf688a50d5d90

Kyra_as_things_grow_Artwork-scaled.jpg

22. as things grow - Kyra

Very, very late discovery but my gosh does this woman have PIPES. She's an up-and-comer in the UK scene and I highly recommend everyone listen to 'Sweet Mahogany' NOW.

Recommend: sweet mahogany  //  need more time, pt. 2

7071_foto1_product_xl.jpg?ff3a22b570408adbd100dee1ef458ea8

220px-Kim_Petras_-_Feed_the_Beast.png

I definitely played it a ton this yr, but like comparing it to tracks like 'Every Single Time' or 'Only Human' they've done better:giraffe:

Oh i listened to Dream Hotel but I don't remember what it sounds like :fan: Think I started listening to her last year & I was shook to find out she's the QUEEN from Hairspray. So much A*a omg I have the shivers... you're still listening to Jason Derulo, huh? :lakitu: I was a former stan but I had to leave his ass behind since he doesn't want to release quality stuff anymore. Demi starting off your list  That song is cute, same for WWIMF? Better Man, Pearls, Made You Look, Blue Moon, That! Feels Good!, Cupid (OG), Waffle House :eddie: Don't remember chemistry (song), so I fear it was one of my least faves from the album. Cure for Love YUPPP. Begin Again YUPPPPPP!!! Jessie bodied that one.

For albums, I enjoyed #25-23 :clap3: especially Ellie! T!FG! was a solid follow-up to WYP?, Bebe had a surprising amount of highlights, and HTH was the type of pop I really love. All 3 of your trinities are pretty good :fish1: Feed the Beast... she was a mixed bag. I fear she's never gonna top TURN OFF THE LIGHT. uhoh :sats:

I still haven't clicked with Amelia and Feed The Beast yet but i kinda want to re-listen to it again
