The last time a black female won AOTY was Lauryn Hill 25 years ago. It's not gonna be easy for SZA to win sadly, not even Beyoncé could do it

But we know Beyoncé never won it because of her lack of involvement in the creation of her albums.

vote split: Taylor, Olivia, Miley. Olivia can take more votes from Taylor than Miley.

vote split: Jon, lana, Boy. Boy is the front runner as Jon and Lana will take more from one another even with their song together some might go for Lana since Jon is a recent win and I'm not sure the new record is more acclaimed than the last one.

lesser vote split: Sza and Janelle. Janelle just keeps getting AOTY with little else :coffee:

The r&b and hip hop vote is there fo Sza it's a matter of how many pop votes she can get

As many have noted, she is known as an artist and writer and doesn't have any gimmicky ways to take away from her artistry and set her as an entertainer.

She had a breakthrough and acclaimed year and I agree that VOTERS KNOW Taylor can have a better album in the future to win its 4th AOTY. I don't think voters feel like this is it for her and because of the antihero/underdog element I truly believe some might not select Taylor and will go for another vote just not sure how that disburses and who benefits.

I still think top 3 is BoyGenius, Sza, Lana with Taylor in 4th (mainly because of Midnights the album as a whole and her 3 wins).

Jon in 5th, Olivia, Miley and Janelle in the last three placements.

Well midnights and ocean Blvd are also bloated and they are her main competition

SOS is a great album but 23 songs with the same tempo and vibe is too much, it all bleeds together after a point. At least Did You Know... has some variety.

If she doesn't win we RIOT!

... so you're asking if the Grammys have the potential to be racist towards black women?

... the answer is obvious: YES, THERE IS A CHANCE

The best performer of our time loses to a boy band twink

The best rapper of our time loses to a thrift store advocate

Frank Ocean, Drake, The Weeknd: all have refused to even submit to the ting

The last black artists to actually be recognized in the top categories have all won with watered-down, whitewashed, overtly traditional, sanitized, devout, or mild performances of blackness

Deadass, Lauryn Hill had to take yall to church and back for top recognition

OUTKAST was at their undeniable peak when they won - but soon Hiphop would become less and less tailored for yt television ceremonies ..

When it comes to lifting black voices up, especially black feminine voices, dont put it past white supremacy to "not get what the big deal is" or want to "take them down a peg"

I hope either her or Lana win

she's the clear front runner so if they manage to overlook her for anyone else, it'll be far too clear what their motives are.

lol oh, you sweet summer child. If being a singer-songwriter was an actual criterion, many artists/albums from decades past wouldn't have walked away with the prize. Do your history.

I'm talking about in the shows whole history. There are many film soundtracks that won and traditional pop records by crooners who don't even write any music. Also, several of the wins are not even "singer-songwriter" type albums, regardless if the artist wrote/produce or not. Mass commercialism and/or appeal to older people are likely bigger criteria than if the artist in question wrote a word they sang.

And being a POC actually boosts her chances

Sure! That's why only three black female artists won AOTY in 65 years.

AOTY is hers to lose but I unfortunately feel like the vote splitting is going to screw her over.

Sure, would love for it to be bumped. SZA absolutely deserves but it won't change the fact that the Grammys have rarely awarded black art, especially by the women.
