In fact, some good singers, are not good at writing songs. And we need to go back to a point where we can acknowledge that that's okay, instead of forcing artists to do things that don't emphasize their strengths. I think this is what's wrong with a lot of brand new artists these days that struggle to break through. They're all expected to write their material and most of it is just garbage. And many industry plants are good at neither 1 1

TaggedGalaxy Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 This is not something new in the industry, it happens all the same time. Amerie had a song she wrote taken from her and was supposed to be given to Jennifer Lopez, she leaked her version of the song in order to prevent it being taken from her. It's a double edged sword for newer artists, they obviously want to present their best music to the labels in order to get it released, but sometimes those labels want to take those songs for their bigger artists. At least Rihanna kept SZA on the song as a feature and didn't use her vocals with no credit 1

I'm stunned at SZA's bravery to finally reveal this! "SZA's bravery" like she said talked about this a million times in the last 7 years 2020 https://www.wonderlandmagazine.com/2020/07/10/sza-summer-2020-issue/ Quote “Punch gave me strict instructions not to play anything from my album, but I wasn’t about to go in there, to a room with [him] and Rihanna, and play the flops. I’m playing “Drew Barrymore” and I’m playing “Consideration”. I’m playing everything I have!” she laughs. “But Punch says, ‘I’m telling you, do not do this,’ so we agreed that I wasn’t gonna do that. Then I walk in, Pharrell is sitting there drinking wine, and I guess my hands just slipped and I played my album. I played Ctrl.” 2019 2017 2016 https://www.huffpost.com/entry/sza-interview_n_5730c663e4b096e9f09212b0 Quote "It was definitely just a random blessing," she said, looking back on her experience with the "Work" singer. "I made a song [Rihanna] connected to, and it just happened. She was super humble, just about everything. So it was really like, just a warm moment." Edited December 2, 2023 by Kiss It Better 3 2

wish Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 Not sure how I feel about SZA twisting the narrative like this. I know she's campaigning rn but this reads as ungrateful and almost like she's throwing Rihanna under the bus to make herself look like a ~true songwriter~ Weird behavior. Why play the victim when Consideration literally catapulted your career? 3 1

You'd think a songwriter would keep the stuff for their album private and not shown to other people. Why show the song you based YOUR album around?? Why gamble that she was on that:

Soda Pop Queen Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 Some people getting on sza head here but I kinda understand her frustration at the time. She was "in a writing camp" back then but it wouldn't surprise me if she was forced to be in one in order to get funded by the label (the conglomerate over TDE). She had 0 bargaining power and name status in the industry in 2016 as she was still an indie girl. Also, this isn't the first time she's talked about it. but what's done is done. Rih added another dope track to her acclaimed Anti record and SZA went on to make her own star, writing many more songs as good as, if not better than, Consideration. They both benefited. 3 2

You’re talking as if Madonna is some kind of a vocalist or professional dancer. Y’all should look more into your faves “talents” before making up narratives about others. 3
mrpartyrocker Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 I mean I get that in the end she was grateful and stuff but I will never understand artists that started off as songwriters complain about how their work was “stolen” from them. I mean you were doing this for a living, girl. You chose to start off as a songwriter and literally Rihanna launched her in the industry (aside of the fact that she made enough bucks to live off it). Rihanna kept her on the track and even offered her the opportunity to perform on one of the most important award show stages. If she was this “b!tch” y’all portrait her to be, she would’ve sang it on her own. I hate to see that Rihanna doesn’t get the credit she deserves for supporting new coming artists and songwriters that don’t get many opportunities to live off that activity. 9 1
