The7thStranger Posted November 30, 2023 Posted November 30, 2023 You got the order right the first time. Vogue took underground gay culture to the mainstream. She bought the inventors of the style to the rest of the world and put a name to the faces of those who were suffering and dying of AIDS. There are two documentaries about that time. Nothing against anybody else, but the work that Madonna, her dancers, and Cyndi Lauper were doing in the 1980s and 1990s is untouchable, and it needs to be revered for what it is. Nothing the next generations of pop stars will touch it because the set of circumstances are simply different. GaGa has done better things for the LGBT community than that song, which I feel has a very confused message by conflating being "a freak" with being queer. Her foundation and her political activism, I feel, has had much more of an effect, and I thank her for that. Taylor's song feels a bit non-committal, and the messaging is also a little confused. I like that she showed up for our community, but it didn't really connect the way it should have. But I do appreciate her bringing a bunch of celebrities together in a next generation "No H8" campaign. 4 6

spree Posted November 30, 2023 Posted November 30, 2023 "Vogue" and it's not even close. Born This Way was a big event, but in retrospect, it came and went pretty quickly. Vogue, on the other hand, has transcended generations. Isn't the new dance craze at the clubs right now literally vogueing? Taylor has done nothing for the gay community as far as I'm aware. 1
