I also remember ATRL saying Gaga was the new Madonna

:ryan3:

OGHers never miss an opportunity to bring up Madge!

The thing is though, Gaga has since eclipsed Madonna in several categories such as acting, whereas Katy now struggles to fill a 3k seat theatre while she sings with an anthropomorphic turd coming out of a toilet! :sistrens:

teenage dream was a legendary era in the pop history, but you can only be a legendary after you have died

Icon not at all, de only sings pop songs and had failed 3 of 6 albums. no versatile at all only childish pop music (expect 365 and HIH)

The way ATRL teats her makes it feel like she’s in the bottom part of the Spotify Artist Chart yet she’s outstreaming so called legends and her classics keep increasing in consumption every year + she’s constantly being praised in viral tweets and TikToks

she’s a pop legend but ATRL isn’t ready for this conversation

Getting viral tiktoks and tweets just means that Gen-Z generally likes you. That doesn't make you a legend  :pig:

Katy is not quite a legend cause she doesn't really have anything unique about her. Her lyrics are pretty generic if you actually read them out (see: Roar, Firework) -- it's just a bunch of similes and metaphors that don't tell us anything about her life or her as an artist. They could be sung by Ava Max or Tate McRae, there's nothing about them that make them distinctly "Katy." Her success is largely due to her co-writers and producers, which explains why she hasn't had any hits since she stopped working with the Teenage Dream/Prism usual suspects. And when she tried to go deeper with Witness, it sounded super cheesy and inauthentic because again, <generic metaphor>, <generic simile>, <vague personal detail>, <generic metaphor> doesn't work. Her songs are great to listen to (Harleys in Hawaii and NRO slap) but they lack character. :sorry: like look at any song off of Teenage Dream and compare it something on Speak Now and they're just on totally different levels.

Rihanna (pre-Anti) was similar, but people thought she was cool and liked her personality so she's stayed in the zeitgeist (beyond tiktoks and tweets, mind you). Does anyone actually like Katy Perry's personality? Witness World Wide or whatever certainly didn't help with her public perception :rip:

These questions are silly.

Your Legends are Michael, Madonna, Tina, Aretha, Prince, Bruce, Elvis, Beatles, Stones, Dylan... maybe Barbra and Cher at a push, but they aren't/weren't as consistently prolific or as widely celebrated as the others.

There are a lot of Icons, but none match the level of impact, success and artistic merit of the handful of Legends above. They may in 20/30 years, we will see.

and what else??

Katy has done legendary things, like 5 #1's from one album.  SIX if we're going by eras and not just albums.  The Teenage Dream era was a legendary era.   Plus most watched Superbowl.  Give it time.  Not everyone can be Madonna or Taylor and that's ok.  In 20 years if she's still is in the media doing whatever, she'll be considered a legend.   Isn't she ranked #7 on biggest female artists of all time on Billboard Hot 100?

So you nitpicked singles metric and decided to pass it as overall :gaycat7:

Well I guess that's what happen when the fave is labelled as single artist, stans start acting hot100 is the end of all.

She's still an incredibly well known name despite years of diminishing returns and is also representative of a certain time period of popular music so icon fits the bill best here. She lacks the long term musical influence and/or societal impact to be deemed a living legend.

she was "a thing" back then

Well the difference is one can release jazz album it would at least last a month on bb200, so the other is definitely getting pushed off the boat sooner or later
