That's exactly it. She is usually ahead via on demand streams by quite a bit. 

 

Brenda only led Mariah on the streaming chart for a single week...ever. She should be competitive this year with her new vid - we'll see.

It makes sense since Mariah leads on Apple and Amazon Music which are subscriber only while Brenda is ahead on Spotify which is ~40% free listeners.
 

For some reason the US Spotify users are the only ones who play Brenda more. I’m not sure if it’s due to taste differences in Spotify users, playlisting or what. Something I have considered is that Brenda’s song is only 2 minutes long which may be favoured by the algorithm as it can drive more ad revenue.

I'm shocked they are so close in airplay too. Mariah must be doing more paid streams, hence the difference in positions.

Im pretty sure it's because of the "Christmas Classics" playlist, in which Brenda is #1 and Mariah is OUT. I guess boomer households would rather only listen to the grandmas and grandpas.
