Suilen Posted January 31 Posted January 31 (edited) Not a dried apricot (in some languages) sabotating a classic. Anyway, a shoutout to Miliyah's faithful albeit a bit safe cover: Edited January 31 by Suilen 1

Graves Posted January 31 Author Posted January 31 11 x 1 (Curaga) HIGHEST SCORE: 10 x 9 (Subomie, Riverbank, scenekiller, gingguu, AMIT, willmcclure9, Ewan Chaos, nostalgic, Reverie) LOWEST SCORE: 3 x 1 (Hey Dude) MY SCORE: 10 As a sister song to Hikari, which was thought to invoke a "dawn" atmosphere, Passion was made with a "dusk" vibe in mind. Though this song actually predates Kingdom Hearts 2, and was slightly re-written when Hikki was brought on-board for the game. This process was a little different than that of the first Kingdom Hearts in a few ways, notably that the English side - Sanctuary - was actually written first this time, with Passion coming about afterwards. Hikaru reportedly had difficulty matching the timing of melody and lyric for the Japanese song. Makes a lot of sense, it's a wholly unique kind of track. Let's talk about that, shall we? Passion is hard to knuckle down to just one genre. It melds different sounds and wears them like a patchwork cloak. Wikipedia settles on defining it as "ambient rock", as well as "ambient" or "ethereal". None of that is particularly inaccurate, but also it doesn't capture the experience that these songs are. The soft cooing in the opening luring you into a sense of safety, like this might be another Simple & Clean, until the back-masked chants come in and brings with it that squealing guitar. The booming drums join soon after, and you know this is a totally different experience. Even as a Kingdom Hearts skeptic, that anime-ass game opening paired with this colossal track is surely a magical moment. One that introduced a generation of nerds to Utada, and J-Pop as a whole. Fun fact! I completed Kingdom Hearts 2 for the first time during the voting period of this rate - it were pretty nice, an 8.5/10. An even more fun fact - Hikaru does not **** with the KH series at all. Relatable monarch. Despite being such a universally adored track amongst fans these days, it was actually something of an under performance on release. December 2005, the same month as Kingdom Hearts 2's launch, Passion peaked at #4 on Oricon... not bad, right? Well, except that it was Hikaru's first single to miss the top two... ever. Given that the song got another gorgeous Kiriya-directed video and the huge promo of being a videogame tie-in theme, it's a little baffling that this was the song that broke that streak. At least modern fans know to respect this one. AMIT is here for Japanese only: "a perfect closer and one of her best songs (passion that is)." Ewan Chaos will always prefer the bops, though: "I always liked this more than Simple & Clean's original version... probably not as much as S&C's remix tho." Finally, Curaga goes off for their girl: "OK this is my 11. I hate saying this is my favorite Utada song because people probably think I just like it because of KH2, but, honestly, I think this song is just so otherworldly and in a genre of its own. They really snapped on this one and that’s probably why it was chosen for the game. Passion > Sanctuary." 3 1

Suilen Posted January 31 Posted January 31 Now to this one I managed to connect, so ethereal. Curaga made points here, expected her to give an 11 to Marseille or sumn. Getting nervous though, maybe the meltdown is happening... 3
