I'm probably in this very slim minority who prefers more atmospheric version of Allie. I can't connect with Girl With No Face as much as I did with Cape God, nothing on this hits me anywhere as hard as Fresh Laundry, Milk or Regulars. But at the same time I always felt like CG had some generic unnecessary fodder as if she was still compromising between her vision and some outside expectations, it makes the album less realized that it could have been. So I was kind of hoping her next step would be just a full-fledged introspective record, especially with the pandemic enhancing people's vulnerability and Allie herself additionally dealing with a lot of pain from her illness. Something made peacefully on her own terms, maybe even all by herself in the comfort of her house. And it's funny, cause that's kind of what she did, except musically it went in a different direction And it is very good, it's thought out, it's well produced (I do find some of the synth patterns to be a bit too in-your-face, but she definitely nailed the 80s pastiche a lot better than many other artists in past few years), but I can't feel it as much as I wish to. Either way I'm happy for her and I'm proud of her, we need more female-produced/self-produced moments in pop. Excited where she goes next, I know she'll surprise us again in the future no it's the same for me. i heavily enjoy "Focus", "Catch" etc. Her lush/ethereal moments are the best imo. But this album is still very good and I love how she always experiments with her sounds 2

SweetOreosOfHeaven Posted March 1 Posted March 1 (edited) Did anyone else see Fantano's review? It was kinda jarring especially considering how he reacted to the tracks before the review. He ended up giving it a 7, which is good (but less than the album deserves), but his review felt overtly critical especially for the score he gave her. It was pretty confusing when he called "Staying Power" presumptuous. Like this man reviews rap albums for a living and somehow found this song's lyrics presumptuous? What? A song where she basically lists off her weaknesses and flaws before naming one quality? Anyway at least it gives her some exposure. Edited March 1 by SweetOreosOfHeaven
Burqa Posted March 1 Posted March 1 (edited) my problem with this album is that she has the perfect high pitched voice for polished pop records and this album is a little too raw, i think it would work better if it was sung by someone with a little edge or rasp to their voice like miley. also some of the synth patterns get a little too repetitive for me at some point. the closest thing we have to a standard refined pop song in here like what she has served before (private life being the best example because it's the same genre) is galina, that's why it's my favorite i will say i think lyrically this is one of her strongest projects though Edited March 1 by Burqa 4
Cruel Summer Posted March 1 Posted March 1 So having had time to sit with this, I think it’s overall maybe my second favorite album of hers. While I do personally believe this album has the highest high in the form of Galina, and while there’s nothing here that I don’t like, Cape God just has a little more sheer volume of tracks that I love. Sarah Come Home was actually my most played track of the year for three consecutive years (the Galina leak finally snatched her in 2023), and Milk came as close to matching that as anything else ever could. I feel like tracks like Fresh Laundry and Rings A Bell evoke feelings that really nobody else can do the same. The highlights of Cape God are on a higher level than most other music, for me, like it just clicks so perfectly. Girl With No Face, on the other hand, has different strengths. It’s relentlessly catchy the whole time, and it’s laser focused on a specific atmosphere. The fact that she produced it alone means that she was in total control of the vision and I think that shines through. I get some of the things I’ve seen that say the album can sound just a little bit too consistent, too “same-y” maybe, but I don’t think it actually bogs things down too much. Above all else I have to say how deeply astounded I am that Allie alone, and no other writer or producer in the world, is responsible for both Galina and Off With Her ****. Like, the sheer talent that has? The power this woman has over me? This album is another testament to the fact that we don’t deserve Allie X and I’m very excited for this to be the fifth straight year that an Allie X song is my most played song. 4
theweekend Posted March 2 Posted March 2 I can feel this is going to be my most played album this year. I just can't get enough of it.
Kern Posted March 2 Posted March 2 well let me say it like this: in terms of replayability, relatability and atmosphere yes, Cape God is a better album but in terms of listening while at the gym, GWNF is better 1
Kern Posted March 3 Posted March 3 I just played Weird World randomly at it finally hit me!! The atmosphere and production value is INSANE 2
