Everyone considered it an almost lock for ROTY/SOTY win and then it didn’t get nominated, but was also shut out from the genre categories too. After Hours was also considered a locked AOTY nomination and a very likely win. It genuinely makes zero sense that nothing from that era got any nominations. They literally nominated Yummy by Justin Bieber in the pop categories over Blinding Lights. When you look at some of the garbage the Grammys consistently nominate/award each year it’s even more aggravating. There’s a reason it’s the easiest and least respected EGOT award. They went out of their way to not nominate it and were rightly blasted for it. This was the worst example of award show politics and I'll never get it because Starboy & BBTM won Best Urban Contemporary Album and After Hours was a far superior body of work. Without BL it still would have been crazy but there's no scenario where that song shouldn't have swept let alone not even get nominated. Part of me thinks the Grammys always get flustered when "urban" artists make pop music because they always get snubbed. 3

Then this thread is stupid in hindsight isn’t it dummy? My point still stands. Why are his stans constantly crying about him getting snubbed if he’s not submitting? And no because they're talking about the After Hours one....not after that because of him protesting. He hasn't submitted anything SINCE THE SNUB. 1

Letemtalk Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 I wasn't a huge fan of the album, but there is no way that Blinding Lights should have missed a nomination for Record of the Year. The biggest song of the year that was also acclaimed should have been there. 2

truthteller Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 i only feel sorry for Blinding Lights, from being thrown away as a B-side to that bland lead single that is Heartless, to being snubbed by the Grammys 1
Extremely Stable Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 The album was mid lmao. He got no support from the pop field as well.

Kiss It Better Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 all of the OP + to think Justin Bieber had tons of noms that year and the likes of Chris Brown, Ice Spice and Coi Leray are nominated this year.... what a joke.... at least they made it up a bit with making SZA and Victoria as 2 of the most nominated this year with that said, had he still submitted on the following year Out of Time would've won him something + Save Your Tears Remix would win big too as an apology 2

That still doesn't change the fact The Weeknd hasn't submitted anything since the SNUB. https://www.forbes.com/sites/hughmcintyre/2022/10/20/drake-the-weeknd--bruno-mars-major-artists-arent-submitting-to-the-grammys/ Please stop quoting and tagging me without doing research. Wonderland Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 I mean, sure, we can argue about the quality of the era until the cows come home... BUT if any white artist released it, it wouldn't have been snubbed and probably would've won. That's the fact of the matter. A white artist who released a song like Blinding Lights and achieved similar success and notoriety would never be snubbed. The attendance excuse also doesn't fly with me. Does no one else remember that year when Pop Vocal Album was 4 women and an absent Ed Sheeran yet he still walked away with the win? 1

Mystic Boy Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 Yeah the album was weak but he deserved his noms of course and BL deserved ROTY at least.
John Slayne Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 yes. it's not my favourite album but compared to a lot of the stuff they nominate, After Hours definitely deserved its flowers from Scammys.
ATRL Moderator Samson Posted November 11, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted November 11, 2023 It was always really shocking that the album was totally shut out. Personally I wasn't a fan of the album but I understood how successful and acclaimed it was The only other thing that annoyed me was the surrounding discourse about it. Too much focus was given to talking about the nominations committees when it got shut out of the straight-voted pop categories, which just means that the pop voters at Academy didn't really like the album and that it wasn't just committees being dishonest. There was a lot of conspiracy-theorizing that didn't need to happen
Haschwalth Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 yes the grammy committee is petty & corrupt af
littlebodybigheart Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 the album not that good. but they should’ve still given him a nomination just to celebrate his domination during the eligibility period.

He’s basically the only pop boy that serves decent music at worst, a concept for an era and an image that stands out. He’s the closest MPB to a pop girl imo 1
Abracadabra Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 The whole thing was honestly baffling and still is to this day, I remember before the nominations came out thinking he was a lock for winning AOTY, SOTY, ROTY
Just a Gay on ATRL Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 The girls who say this album is mid and that's why this entire era got ZERO nominations... let's say hypothetically everyone with voting power agreed with you. That hasn't stopped them from nominating mid to subpar albums before with massive anchor smashes. Sorry that argument won't fly. There have been many worse albums to get multiple noms that were mainly/only nominated because of one smash. There was clearly some shady mess going on. If not for After Hours, then ESPECIALLY for Blinding Lights, which was not only an objective chart smash, but also acclaimed and influential in pop music. The BL snubs are what can truly clue us in that this was not purely a "it didn't get enough votes!!" situation. There's just no way. 5
RideOrDie Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 Yes, but it has nothing to do with him being black or the album quality. As we've seen time and time again, including this year, Scammys can and will nominate mediocre releases - they operate purely on politics and what kind of statement/narrative they want to create that year. Stuff must have happened behind the scenes so some higher ups intervened and locked him out.
