Does the After Hours Grammy snub seem even more ridiculous in hindsight?

As you all know, The Weeknd was snubbed a few years ago at the Grammy's.

However,

  • Blinding Lights is now the biggest song of all-time in the United States
  • After Hours era is probably one of the biggest male eras in the last 10 years outside of "Divide" by Ed.
  • In terms of acclaim, the album made multiple Top 10 year-end lists by major publications (Complex ranking it #1)
  • It won multiple awards at other high-profile music ceremonies
  • Maintains a Metacritic score of 80
  • To this day has not received a single negative review (even from Fantano).
  • Shaped and influenced the musical landscape with 80s revivalism

It’s surprising, but I’m not mad about it. It’s not a great album.

Absolutely. The fact they said perform at the Grammys instead of the Super Bowl :skull: Like what stupid person would take the Grammys instead of one of the biggest stages in the world :skull: It showed how corrupt things were at the core

That album been mid af. Let's be real now. It wasnt better than any of the albums nominated in the AOTY category that year. Only surprise was that BL didnt receive a nomination but even that song wasnt his best work.

Of course.

I am still surprised some ATRLers dismiss the snub so easily.

Many of them will just say that his attitude towards it, was too much..but is that really enough of an excuse to say that?

Then we hold those awards to such a high regard when they literally show their corruption..

This story is literally a fabricated made up lie he made up / someone on his team convinced him of. He just didnt get enough votes

I can't stand the Weeknd but yeah, that snub was beyond ridiculous. If ESV can get nominated so can After Hours :psyduck:

Please that was a complete lie. Lots of artists have performed at the Superbowl and the Grammys within the same month

One of the most egregious snubs in Grammy history. It was easily AOTY & BL ROTY/SOTY

He didn't get noms in straight voted category (pop field) which has no panel to block his ass

I didn't care for the album outside of a few of the singles, but objectively speaking if any album "deserved" Grammys that year, it would be the one. Very weird and unexpected behaviour from the Grammys. But life goes on.

It was ridiculous right from the start

The fact Blinding Lights didnt get a nom in such weak year is travesty...so yes.

Didn't Justin get nominated that year? If the answer is yes, then, yes, it is.

Grammy voters simply didn't like him. He got shut out of categories that didn't have committees.

The Grammy producers wanted him to perform for the show considering that they were negotiating with him even before nominations were released. If they controlled the voting process, they would have ensured that he got some nominations.

He did deserve nominations but he wasn't the first or last artist to get snubbed.

The way he literally admitted to making this up a year later but people still run with it:

Q: But do you think a group of people objectively and fairly considered your album along with other albums and didn’t choose to nominate your art? Do you think that’s actually what happened?
A: When it happened, I had all these ideas and thoughts. I was angry and I was confused and I was sad. But now, looking back at it, I never want to know what really happened.

The theory literally never made sense. First off, MULTIPLE people have done the Super Bowl and received Grammys/performed same year (Gaga, Bey, Katy, Bruno, etc.) secondly CBS was televising BOTH events that year so it wouldn't even be a competition situation :rip: He was snubbed and pissed venting his meltdown to the public

Absolutely, it was more than just a snub, they went out of their way to make a point and I’m not sure what that point was.

Quality? Okay, but Justin was nominated that year

Success? Blinding Lights and Save Your Tears are bigger than every song nominated

Goodwill? The Weeknd never disrespected the Grammys pre-snub to my knowledge, and even if he had that hasn’t stopped noms before

Obviously there was something going on behind the scenes, idk what it was but I haven’t watched the Grammys since. It’s one thing that the AOTY category has been a mess for the last decade, but this was such a big snub I just didn’t see the point in watching anymore, and every Grammys since that year has validated that decision.

This to me is still the craziest thing the Grammys has done in a very long time.

Getting multiple nominations for a major/successful era and not winning is one thing (Mariah, Ariana)

Not getting nominated at ALL is whole another mess.

It was definitely snubbed and I don't think they'll ever make a mistake like that ever again

It's one thing to be nominated and lose, but to not even be nominated is just...

Blinding Lights is easily one of the biggest (if not the biggest) award show snubs of all time. Everyone considered it an almost lock for ROTY/SOTY win and then it didn’t get nominated, but was also shut out from the genre categories too. After Hours was also considered a locked AOTY nomination and a very likely win.

It genuinely makes zero sense that nothing from that era got any nominations. They literally nominated Yummy by Justin Bieber in the pop categories over Blinding Lights. When you look at some of the garbage the Grammys consistently nominate/award each year it’s even more aggravating. There’s a reason it’s the easiest and least respected EGOT award.

No he got what he deserved when he publicly protested the grammys. Him and kanye haven’t gotten noms since. Clowns.
