Beyonce just wrapped up a successful world tour and will feed fans with the film in December and Katy is about to release a new album in a few months. Okay. I'll take the bait and say it.

Beyonce is a legend because of her talent not because she makes universally appealing music. 

 

People love Beyonce because she's one of the few multi-talented pop stars out there who can sing, dance, and perform very well. 

 

But her music was never as universal as Katy's, Rihanna's, Gaga's, Adele's, Britney's, etc. Even Taylor's songs have had more impact on Asia than Beyonce's had on Africa despite Bey ironically trying to tap into the Afrobeat sound at times. 

 

Even in Panama where my family is from, Bey is still largely known as the "Single Ladies" girl in the country. And her 2010's music was a blip on the radar in most Latin America outside of Brazil. Literally no one requests Beyonce, not even Single Ladies, in most Spanish speaking countries in Latin America. That's not shade either because we tend to operate in our own bubble overall. But Bey kinda stopped penetrating the global market after the 2000's. 

 

That's Bey's biggest weakness too besides her acting. Everything else about her is on point and legendary: The singing/vocals, the consistency, the performances, the dances, the versatility, the mystique, the costume designs, the eras, etc. But the lack of universal and globally appealing music post 2009 is the main reason why her streams and numbers don't match her legend status or level of fame.
