Why was Kelly forgiven yet Ashlee was demonized?

Both came out at the same time at the turn of the millennium and capitalized on the pop rock resurgence that was spearheaded by their peer Avril Lavigne. Their record labels wanted them to be their own Avril and commercialized them into pop rock girls with the same punk aesthetic that the GeePee was eating up at the time.  Both had pop rock lead singles that resonated with the general public. They promoted their pop rock eras in events that would result in fiascos for both of them.

First was Kelly who had her first large scale performance after being crowned as the American Idol. In this performance, you can see that Kelly was uncomfortable and had trouble in performing the song… until during the last chorus when it was just a technical nightmare and Kelly was drowned out by her background singers and seemed defeated

Meanwhile Ashlee Simpson had her own boo-boo during her Saturday Night Live debut where she also had technical issues and her backing track played on a different song

yet in all of this, why was it that the GeePee had forgiven Kelly for her performance but did not afford to give Ashlee the same grace for her own scandal, which was at par with Kelly’s? What happened? What went wrong ?

Intent and who is to blame is why.

Kelly's - clearly a technical issue totally out of her control, she did what she could with it, we all had already seen her nail live performance countless times, and she was not intending to lip-sync.

Ashlee - fully intended to lip sync the song and pass it off as "live", the skipping totally thwarted her intent and her reaction was hilarious and it was a trainwreck

Ppl knew Kelly could sing because she won a whole competition for it. :rip:

Ashlee Simpson did the Hokey Pokey after not even singing the correct SONG.

also, like, how many pop stans were focused on the fedex orange bowl?

… completely different scenarios. Kelly had tech issues, Ashlee tried to lip sync and backfired on her, plus everyone knew and still knows Kelly is a top tier vocalist - while Ashlee had nothing of the sort.

Kelly still sounded good behind the technical difficulties, Ashlee performed at the same event and sounded awful. And that was shortly after SNL so people were already under the impression that she couldn't sing live, this basically reinforced that.

I love Ash but Kelly is one of the ultimate america’s sweethearts (ew I hate that term but it’s true)

insanely good voice, charisma out the wazoo, beautiful, funny, sweet, underappreciated songwriter, and just overall a great person who deserved every quantifier of success she got! Ash was not particularly known for her vocals. yes, she was done dirty and I hate how she was treated, but she wasn’t what Kelly was to the american public. in addition? Kelly’s was a technical issue, while Ash’s was an artistic problem lol

anyway lemme go give the Santigold-penned masterpiece Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya) a few streams for the wonderful sis!

I like Ashlee, would even say I was a fan but the situations are entirely different. If you have to compare a technical issue vs straight lipping… and Kelly is not someone who lips  so it’s like what is the point of asking “why she got forgiven for it” when she has always sung live…

Hold up! I didn’t know that Santigold wrote that bop! Now that I’m listening to it for the first time in years, it’s quite obvious!

Because Kelly can actually sing? Lol

Did you not watch the Ashlee video? Kelly’s tech problems wasn’t even as bad as Ashlee’s. Plus the way Ashlee handled it was a complete disaster. Not comparable whatsoever.

There's a difference between a technical issue that hinders your successful live singing and a technical issue that hinders your ability to lip sync. Kelly didn't need to be forgiven for trying to sing live but being thwarted by problems she couldn't control.

Well, you basically said it. Kelly was already established by that time, one performance with technical issues couldn't hurt her career or image, actually she showed how professional she is by keeping it going despite of how awful the sound was overall.

Meanwhile Ashley still had to prove herself and show to the world she wasn't just Jessica's sister. She was by her first 'big' performance, SNL, performing in that show can make you or break you, like, Lana still gets dragged til this day for her performance in there even when she sang live, unlike Ashley :swan:

the misinformation @nostalgiahas :rip:

1. Kelly wanted the pop/rock sound and begged for heavier drums and guitar sounds because she wanted to separate herself from the idol image. She was inspired by evenesance; That’s why she wrote with their lead guitarist,David Hodge.

2. SUBG was originally a bubbly pop songs without any rock essence (which is why it was turned down by pink) and Kelly didn’t want to record it; so she compromised with the label by adding heavy drums and guitars on it.
3. Breakaway was actually the lead single (which is debatable I guess).

Did not know Outta My Head was cowritten by Santigold, no wonder it's so good.
