i feel like houdini would’ve been even better if they put the tempo up a little bit. i heard this slightly sped up version and it sounds much more instant

I think thats exactlly the reason. 
they changed the lead & released this as a „warm up/comeback“ single cuz they knew that they have to promote DTN (for award season) + christmas time.

& that they will push it in january the last time. If it clicks - fine. 
if not, they know they saved the mega smash aka the actual lead single for february

I think they had to release something contractually due to campaign with PUMA. "Houdini" video is basically like an commercial to PUMA and maybe after "Training Season" was scrapped as first single (it would make sense to use Puma in a song with such name) they had to shoot video for "Houdini". Im sure PUMA insisted to have video out in November to catch the Xmas market
