I agree. Like we really don’t need full on scenes - just show them making out for a few secs and start to take off their clothes and leave the obvious implication that they had sex. Shows like ELITE do the absolute most with their sex scenes.

I wonder if this actually true or if they're just saying this, though. Shows like Shameless became resurgent hits via Tiktok due to sex as the main selling point. Euphoria is the most tweeted about show ever. It has a massive following on other social media as well.

One of the most prominent criticisms people have with the show is the oversexualization of its female characters.

But it is on topic, I'm glad somebody noticed the second part of the headline. It literally says they want more representation of asexuality and the spectrum of it, therefore also platonic relationships. It's a shame that Sex Education went viral because it portrayed asexuality with respect and honesty for probably the first time in media for god knows how long. I relate to that a lot even though I'm not 100% asexual. I only learned in my 20s that not desiring sex is as normal as desiring sex in any other way. But even children get bombarded with expectations of if you don't desire romance and/or sex/hookups, you're probably damaged. I think that's a great point that unfortunately gets lost under "concerned" voices whether we have enough sex scenes in media.

Sex and nudity are an intricate part of the human nature and human condition. Cinema, tv, photography are always a kind of spectacle / voyeurism. Audiences crave, on some level, to view both what they know but also what is unknown or hidden. I don't get the argument that sex scenes are pointless or/and unnecessary when they can give both a certain feel to a work of art and also serve an aesthetic.

Maybe this is my interpretation of this, but obviously there's a difference between "gen z wants less sex on screen" and “gen z wants to see an emphasis on non-romantic relationships” or “gen z thinks that sex scenes don’t add anything to the story”

 

Also combined with the fact that the subject's age are from ages 13-24, so i’m not shocked that young teens feel this way about sex scenes in general lol

Sex overexposure has been insane in the last 2 decades, it’s so unnecessary and not special anymore.

 

It used to be a cheap way to stimulate viewers.

 

Once everything and everyone is so sexualized is even hard to get hard anymore.

I’m not sure why sex scenes are even still a thing. Sex scenes were an answer to the conservative and strict rules for television and film prior to the 60s. You saw a lot of nudity and sex in the late-60s because it was considered “artistic and taboo”. It isn’t anymore so they shouldn’t even exist.
