Couldn't we conversely say that if Britney debuted years before the boom of digital sales (which along with illegal downloads, helped to squash physical album sales), that Britney's lead is at least partially because Beyoncé debuted into an era of slowed down album sales?

Physical album sales were at their peak around 1999/2000, and by the time 2003 came along according to this chart, in the US they went from 938 million in 1999 to 746 million in 2003, and by the time 2008 came along (Beyoncé's best selling era), they were less than half the amount of 2003 with 368 million.

Thus, it would stand to reason that if Beyoncé's first three albums were all released in the album sales peak, she would probably AT LEAST have sold 125% more albums.

And it's not as if Britney didn't release three entire albums between 2003-2008, as many as she released between 1999-2002 where she might have been able to gain more singles sales, though I understand they were not the years of her commercial peak as well as dealing with things that prevented her from fully promoting some of these eras.

This isn't meant to shade or diminish Britney, just to further the idea that comparing artists in this way is always going to come up with certain factors for and against them.

You're not wrong, but if you want to bring up a comparison, the closest thing we have is Destiny's Child and their sales were not exactly up to par with Britney's :michael: It's not a fair comparison, but that's the closest we have to getting a clearer picture. Plus, Britney Spears with at least her first two (if not three) albums was selling above her peers while Beyonce was selling at the normal rate of other artists between 2003-2007 (not that's wrong, because Beyonce was still one of the biggest artists of that period). So I don't know if they both debuted as solo stars at around the same time, if Beyonce would be on par. Perhaps following up? I'd say yes.

Rather than combining all these factors with clearly unequal weights, artists should just be divided on best-selling pure and digital artists or something

That's my insist

My point really wasn't that she'd have sold as many albums as Britney, but that the gap of overall sales would probably be closer if we account for the dip in overall sales in the 2000s. I admit I don't know the numbers involved so it's hard for me to say that with that considered and TEA sales of both artists, their total sales would even out, though. I think I may have ran with a point that didn't quite consider that I don't have all those numbers lol.

Guinness use the "record sales", which means the singles sales + pure album sales and they didn't include streams

According to ChartMaster:

Madonna 146m pure albums sales + 64m other LP + 75m physical single + 42m digital single = 327 million

Rihanna: 33m pure albums sales + 1.2m other LP + 3.6m physical single + 257m digital single = 295 million

Mariah: 116m pure albums sales + 31.2m other LP + 37m physical single + 50m digital single = 234.2 million

Taylor: 56.5m pure albums sales + 10.3m other LP + 0.32m physical single + 162m digital single = 229.1 million

Beyonce: 37m pure albums sales + 6m other LP + 4m physical single + 164m digital single = 211 million

Britney: 69.5m pure albums sales + 11.4m other LP + 18.6m physical single + 83.3m digital single = 182.8 million

I understand the sentiments that single sales shouldn’t equate to album sales but 257 million digital is insane and Rihanna would still be #2 if we only counted her digital sales.

I took the liberty of scaling the sales with albums getting 2 points, physical sales getting 1.5 and digital sales getting 1 point. Rihanna is still top 5, she just switched with Mariah. I even went a step further and did it with albums as 3 points, physical singles as 1.5 and digital as 1 point and it’s still the same, except Britney takes Beyonce’s spot at #5.

Madonna: 574.5m | 784.5  (album at 2 points vs 3 points)
Mariah: 399.9m | 547.1

Rihanna: 330.8m | 365

Taylor: 296.08m | 362.88

Beyoncé: 256m | 299

Britney: 203.5m | 346.1

Wow, I didn’t realise Mariah shifted so many albums. All of them are legends and all should be celebrated no matter what position they’re in. Icons

Oh wow:clap3: This method makes sense, imo.

I think Celine dion is above Mariah if counted this way.

Celine sold more albums than her
