Is Charli XCX declining?

Recommended Posts

Artistically, has she declined a lot for you?

For me, Vroom Vroom -> Number 1 Angel -> Pop 2 -> Charli is her legacy.

A little sad that the XCX World material never saw the light of day, but I think the one-offs she put out from those sessions were the best from it so there's that at least.

But Crash -> Hot In It -> Out Out -> In The City are just okay/cute and I don't really care for them enough....Speed Drive felt like a return to form though.

And aside from the music, her energy lately has been off-putting. Ever since Crash, she seems a lot more irritable, some if it is understood but it's just been lowkey turning me off from her and viewing her as a little bit corny and obnoxious. I know she entered her "bad *****/sellout" era with Crash but I wish it'd end already. :dancehall2: What say you ATRL?

The sound she cultivated during that time is completely oversaturated, it wouldn’t do her any favours to keep beating the dead horse, so I think she jumped off at the right moment. I think it’s too early to judge what the future looks like for her because Crash was a self admitted cash grab on her way out her previous record deal. I don’t think she’s meaningfully declined yet.

No. Crash was great as an album and had some excellent tracks, even some of her best with Lightning and some personal favorites of mine like What You Think About Me and Twice and Constant Repeat and New Shapes. Out Out is just a one-off single. In The City sounds completely fine.

I understand that her more intentional pursuit of traditional pop stardom isn’t for everyone, but the best tracks on Crash show she clearly still has what made Pop 2, Charli, and HIFN so good, and I believe she still has significant room to evolve those sounds further when she comes back to them.

No imo. Her only album that I find worse than like a 3.5/5 is N1A and even that I love like 4 of the songs. And she's been annoying af on socials for a long time now and I don't really care about how musicians act online.

She hasn't even released a full album or EP since Crash so it'd be hard for me to say if her music has gotten worse since Crash. But even then, that remix of Welcome to My Island and Speed Drive are great, so :michael:

Well thinking about it, I suppose TECHNICALLY she's been on a decline since Pop 2 since it is still her best, but HIFN and Crash are incredible so I don't want to devalue them.

Not exactly declined but after hearing this newest song I do think she’s become artistically stagnant. I was willing to accept her making bangers for the sake of being bangers on Crash, but now everything that’s followed since is similarly generic and uninteresting. I actually like Crash and think it’s good for a party mood, but it’s very formulaic pop music and isn’t sonically interesting in the way Vroom Vroom, Pop 2 or hifn were. Same with this In the City song, it’s cute but it’s getting old. I know she’s capable of better stuff, hopefully she gets back to it on her next album

I am the biggest hater of her current attitude, but she just had her biggest song this year in almost 10 years. So no, she is not declining. Some of you need jobs aside from posting these nonsense threads :biblionana:

In the city is a flop for me but hey.  She had ATAP/BIOYL/self titled and then rebounded with HIFN/crash :michael:

Speed Drive is an excellent song, btw.

She can reinvent herself and come back stronger.

It’s actually crazy how many people say Crash is watered down / mediocre yet stan s/t which is easily her worst.  I mean, I guess everyone has their tastes but I don’t get it bc all the critiques people have of crash apply to that album more

Her commercial success is not declining I guess but like you said her run from VV to HIFN is her legacy. She changed the pop landscape with those projects and they will be referenced forever when the topic of Charli comes up

I guess now she just wants cheap hits

in the city kinda sucks …. not even cuz of sam smith , it’s just a snooze

Declining artistically =/= peaking commercially :bibliahh: You tried it though. As it stands, the material since Crash has been her weakest output in a long time. Let's hope she's just feeling her generic pop gorl teas and will turn it around.

Crash was intentionally crafted to be a main pop girl kind of album. And with that came her biggest commercial success and a huge tour, her music offering is super diverse and we know she can go alternative hyper pop when she wants to but she's also going to try appease the masses. Especially with Speed Drive being so huge !!

This. Also, I really don't understand why people keep saying that Crash is a generic pop album when she confirmed this was her intention. It's fresh with good and clean production; she won at the end of the day.

Crash is her only good album and she was right to stop with the fax machine noises

Too bad she didn't do it earlier

I understand why she's taken the direction that she has, but I don't use anything after Pop 2 minus some droplets

She literally put out one mid album after 3 fantastic albums back to back to back. It’s barely a slip - she’ll come back to her artsy fartsy bag sooner or later.
