Well for one, it did do better. Not to mention it didn't have a tour bundle, it was a complete change of sound and wasn't "poppy" by any means, it didn't have a hit going into it, and the promo before the album release was fairly light.

State of Grace. Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 these numbers are not really that good tbh, especially considering this is with the tour bundle but we'll see in the coming weeks if the album has longevity though 2 minutes ago, Duca said: yes, Joanne did 199k *201k
Navyofbadgals Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 55K for SZA is super impressive Katy's numbers are good considering the stance the media has taken on her and such They could've been higher because of the tour bundle, but it's not that bad
ATRL Moderator Azulito Posted June 16, 2017 ATRL Moderator Posted June 16, 2017 Wow SZA outdoing predictions by 10k. Impressive
- JED - Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 (edited) Joanne outsold, without tour bundles Congrats on the #1 tho Edited June 16, 2017 by - JED -

Ego Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 That's pretty decent. Was expecting less but the bundle saved her. Congrats on the second female #1 of the year!

It's by a similar margin to the difference between PRISM and ARTPOP and Katy fans went nuts over that difference for years! Only this time, there is a ticket bundle inflating the lower-selling album, too. OT: Poor numbers for Katy but not surprising. Edited June 16, 2017 by Rusty
jinzo Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 Also, how many albums were given away for free with the tour? We should deduct these from the overall total, or at least highlight Witness with an asterisk. Witness *
TattooedDreams Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 Decent numbers. Kinda sad with the bundle but I'll be nice I guess. Taylor or Miley will probably be the next female to cross 200k units after Joanne.

It's like both fan bases are arguing over who's the bigger flop with both underperformed. I mean it wasn't a huge smash or anything but it did do well for the reasons I listed above. By no means a flop. In 2016/2017, neither one of these opening week numbers are bad at all, both are good, but when you take into account other factors surrounding the release, Gaga's come off as more of a success.
