So her family is basically set for generations, good for ha  :clap3: Not every artist is supposed to be obsessed with owning their masters

It’s so hard for me to digest that some artists are fighting tooth and nail to own their work while some just sell it away like this? Shows who is the true artist and who is manufactured

It’s ultimately a more lucrative option for bigger artists to sell for a large upfront sum, which they likely would’ve calculated is worth more than accumulative stream payouts in their lifetime + weighed up against the current dollar. Streaming is pennies, comparatively. Also, $225m is worth more now than it will be later.

This isn’t the case for smaller artists or those that generate immense wealth through other ventures, like make up or sponsorship deals. No one is shilling out millions for the catalogue of smaller artists, so they rely on maximising their stream revenue, though the the shifting trends in music consumption, play-listing & streaming revenue payouts are only going to make this even harder for them as platforms grow more stingy/vie for more control.

Basically, the writing’s on the wall.

My mind goes to the CATalog box set. She rly knew that was her last opportunity to do anything for the fans with Witness or Smile & she said **** it. I wouldn’t be shocked if she retires. She def hasn’t been energized by her pop career in a very long time

Some artists like Bruce Springsteen would like to sell away the burden of managing their catalogue while they are still alive so their children would not suffer from such a huge responsibility. Also to avoid situation like the Marvin Gaye estate who just lives off his works.
But Katy's latest work is just a couple years ago :rip: And now she already has no control over it :rip:Like... :deadbanana4:

lol girl it has nothing to do with art... streaming has literally killed music. the music industry is in shambles rn hence everyone chasing TikTok hoping that will somehow become the thing to save music. artists who are selling now are smart because the current streaming model doesn't work and behind the scenes labels are trying to find smth new that will generate more $$$$ so how long this current model of streaming will be around no one knows and no one knows if the next model will be any better for artists.

Gotta respect the hustle. She’s been musically washed up for a while now but still keeps her bag heavy by being a judge, shoe seller and now this :clap3:

Isn't that incredibly generous? Like will the investor ever see a profit?

the goal of the investor probably isn't to profit on the individual catalogues they buy but to sell the entire portfolio of artists they have to someone else for a profit

The licensing opportunity is what she just sold away, sis. :coffee2:

She literally sold away every control she has over her music and her legacy omg. :rip:

OP suggested there was no money to be made from her music when it's the exact opposite :rip: she didn't make $225mil from the deal for nothing

So now she’ll be making money from songwriting credits only as if she gave these songs to other artists?

Thats crazy

Wow she's actually retiring :cries2:

I mean... this makes sense. Her popularity is declining and the daily streams are getting lower & lower so might as well cash out while she still can.

It doesn't make sense for an artist that's past their peak to not sell their music catalogue. All Katy loses is the right to choose where her music gets licensed but she'll easily make more from this deal than she would ever make from her catalogue in the next 50+ years. Especially considering her music is not exactly gaining popularity with time like say Lana

She has a viral song on tiktok like every week :rip:

Why do some people ignore her fairly good numbers today? She'll cross 2B spotify streams in 2023 without any new songs and major push in the last 2 years. Her catalogue is pulling huge numbers considering her peak was around 2014/2015.

I think this was a good step for her as it opens new opportunities for younger generations to get to know her as music will now be more included in films, series etc. This can backfire ofc with songs such as IKAG or TGIF.

But yeah, for us 100 fans left, this really means she is done making music on a level she did 2008-2014.

Lots of artists who sell their catalogue still tour and release music. It doesn’t mean retirement.

How many albums does Katy have in her deal with Capitol?

It’s not about masters though.

She won't be getting royalties from writing credits anymore, right? This is why she's getting paid this big amount of money. When artists sell their catalogs, they sell absolutely everything. Is this correct?
