mons†er Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 the reason why the pop star is dying is because Generation Z doesn't believe in artists development. They enjoy the easy bake oven artists that come out from tik tok and genuinely can't sing, just vibes and aesthetic. also they're uninspiring and aren't doing anything groundbreaking to shake up the current musical direction since everyone is using samples or mumbling on a song. Generation Z doesn't want vocals, they just want pop songs they can listen to on tik tok and use lyrics for instagram captions. 7 1 3
hawx23 Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 Olivia, Billie and Dua are around. I think it's fine. 1

I am very unimpressed with some of the popular artists today as far as their music output. I’m sure a lot of other music listeners are as well. I think we need to hold musicians to a higher standard than we do. 1
KatyPrismSpirit Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 Rock n roll fans said music was “dying” when Madonna debuted. Madonna fans said pop music was “dying” when Britney Spears debuted. Now those Britney Spears fans say pop culture is dying because of artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish and it not being “exciting” enough. Can yall not comprehend this very obvious trend? 😭😭😭 3
GraceRandolph Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 @Love Again can you school these girls?

Can yall not comprehend this very obvious trend? 😭😭😭 There’s obviously an element of millennials getting older to factor into this. But I think there are valid criticisms towards modern pop music. Radio takes forever to let go of the same 10 songs in rotation. Lots of great pop songs get ignored by radio and the public on streaming. Talented pop girls like Zara, Tove, Charli & Carly don’t get the push or attention from the public they deserve. Etc. Olivia, Billie, Lana, and Taylor are not really my issues with modern music. I think they’re talented girls whose music I enjoy and they are leaving their stamp on music and changing it. My ONLY main criticism of these girls (sans Lana) is that I think they are bit overpraised and overawarded to such a point that they can essentially release anything and get praised, and get awards sometimes so much that it would be nice to see the love spread out for other people to shine. That’s not really their fault, though.

SkinnyGaga Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 I live in Australia and pop music is completely dead, honestly it’s because nobody listens to the radio and all new music is found through either going to festivals and play listing through Spotify.

GraceRandolph Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 Just now, KatyPrismSpirit said: they are literally only two albums in Lorde is only 3 albums in. Doesn’t change the fact that they’ve been on the music scene since before Trump got elected.

That’s not really their fault, though. this is music that resonates with this generation. otherwise it wouldn’t have been succesful. the last two album of the year winners (highes honor in music) were by jon batiste (completely unknown but very talented) and harry styles. other artists definitely do get praise and shine. it’s just what people on stan community focus on that make it seem everything revolves around just taylor and olivia. Song Of The Year and Best New Artist for example were Bonnie Raitt with a cancer awareness song and Samara Joy (a highly talented but local jazz songstress) I’d even argue that a bigger variety of genres, artists and ages get appraisal today, more than ever before.
pisuke Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 I thought it was, but it is not. Just in the mainstream. At least now is better than pop music from 2009-2013ish.

People didn't think Madonna was a talented singer when she came out, rock was still a huge genre when she appeared. why would people say pop music is dying when Britney debuted they crowned here the princess of pop? Britney fans aren't saying pop culture is dying, they're saying pop music is stagnant and unimpressive compared to what decades before. I get that you're trying to say that people need to open their minds to trends changing, but the bigger factor is the effort and the ability to execute the music. 1
shyboi Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 Funny how the dude of the vide uses Madonna, Britney and Gaga as the old model for pop superstars
imabadkid Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 honestly it’s a myriad of reasons… there’s blame to go around, Gen Z just doesn’t seem as interested in new pop stars, record labels, social media, TikTok, etc.

El Chico Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 This topic is so ******* dead and repeated over and over by people that can’t come to terms that maybe the current stars aren’t marketed to them or that were in a different era of music I will say that when it come to me and my friends my age we all have way different taste and listen to artist that the other wouldn’t know anything about. Streaming helped people curate their own little bubble of music that can branch out from the really mainstream “superstar” artist. Add on TikTok and social media and well…..
Solaria Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 I’m kind of disappointed that people keep shoving these things away under the guise of ‘yall are just getting old and cant keep up with modern pop culture’ While this absolutely can be true, I would like to say that pop music and pop culture is art and art can always be criticized at any moment in time. I don’t think that the state of pop music today is in good shape. Monoculture dying out is fun for people who are into very niche genres, but for people like me and many others on ATRL who are into big, escapist, loud pop eras, it’s not necessarily something to celebrate. It is not a good thing imo that we have so many quick, fad TikTok hits now. It’s not a good thing that the charts are so incredibly stagnant and people are consuming artists their old catalogues en masse. New artists aren’t as grand and exciting as they used to be. Relatability is not always a good thing. The art form that is pop music that most of the gay community and most of ATRL loves is reliant on grand, larger than life pop stars and that side is dying out. Please stop responding with ‘but this and this artist’ ‘good music is everywhere’ I’m not talking about cult artists like Slayyyter or Charli or Rina etc. They are not part of the grand pop machine, and that’s what we WANNA see. I don’t know why the singer songwriter stans of ATRL get so high and mighty when we wanna see an artist of the caliber of Gaga, Britney or Madonna smash again. That’s the pop most of this website loves. 4 3
dumbsparce Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 Pop will never die. You're just getting older and can no longer relate to the new forms of pop. Teenage Dream kind of bubblegum pop is dead but guess what? Back in 2010 people were saying the same bc pop sounded nothing like what the literal King & Queen of the genre were putting out during their heyday. 1 1

People were 100% shitting on Madonna and Britney when they came out. Especially older generations found that they were lowering the bar for music. This is very profound if you just look at common criticisms at the beginning of their careers and their musical peaks. 1
EmailMySwift Posted September 14, 2023 Posted September 14, 2023 Pop music is not dying. In fact it's thriving. Pop music by popstars of the 2000s is dying because they're either not releasing music or if they are, they're releasing songs like this, one of the worst songs of all time: 5
