As I just alluded to in another post above, in 2003 when the VMAs wanted something fun and splashy to introduce the show, they went to Madonna for that, and seemed to have given her carte blanche. That says a lot. She's very much the Queen of the VMAs.

That doesn't mean that another artist isn't eligible for that title - depending on if they have been more popular on the show (and lots of people do see it for the former, which tells u something since u do know this site hates on her every chance they get).

She definitely is smaller than Madge as a whole, but in VMAs terms - she isn't just "the princess of the show". Even if you don't see it for her, her moments still at least put her next to Ciccone.

 

Also, you don't know how they are with other artists. Madonna is obviously the Queen, so ofc they would give her all she wants. That doesn't mean that some other artist don't get the same special privileges.

Madonna had two iconic VMA performances (1984 and 1990)…until she attached herself to Britney in 2003 and Britney made the Kiss iconic. I recognize Madonna for the trailblazer that she is, but there’s a reason the kiss was so focused on Britney and not any other girl. Britney also, undeniably, has more iconic VMA performances. Madonna has 1984, 1990 and 2003 while Britney has 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2007.

Britney lip synced with a snake for 5 seconds and embarrassed herself in another performance + one lesbian kiss stunt. She is not the queen of VMAs but she can be a princess. Beyonce did not work her black ass off with her debut single Crazy in Love at 2003 show, self titled medley, 16 minute epic lemonade finale, and single ladies show stopping performance to not be considered. Especially over someone like gaga who had 1 attention seeking performance and fell off after that. Some folks truly do have to work 3x as harder for half the credit.
