Beyonnaise Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 Ahead of Olivia Rodrigo’s pivotal sophomore album next Friday, is there hype among the GP? Have you heard people talking about the release outside of ATRL?
Bonicap Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 I think there was more hype for the lead single, but it will sell +150k pure copies so a very big debut is guaranteed. Then it will depend on the quality.
Big Bad Wolf Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 No not really. She needed to come with something more mature this time around. Hopefully people will be here for that next time. 1
magazine Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 I do feel the hype has died down. But she's completely fine
vale9001 Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 (edited) not the hype someone should think 3 months ago for sure (and we should really open a discussion about how 3 months roll to an album are pointless in this decade...we had many cases to prove this now) but it's gonna still make very good numbers in streaming. Kayseri Mantisi Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 No hype at all but she'll still do really good first week probably
Schami66 Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 I don't know about the GP but im hyped! I really like both singles and had Sour on repeat for a while. I expect quality! 5
Selegend Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 (edited) No but SOUR being everything that it was will make the GP stream the album when its out. they're just not as excited as they should and i blame the lackluster visuals (promo pictures looking straight off from sour) but they will still stream and she'll still win. Nashe Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 idk about anybody else, but I'm hype af. new pop music = happy me 2

I think the major issue is 3 months between lead single and the album. If you sell a lot of physicals you can announce it 3 months in advance and try some promo/marketing moves to boost pre-orders, but releasing the lead single that much time in advance is what kills the hype, even if the lead single is successful and well received like Vampire. A big part of the audience reacts as if they have already received the product they were waiting for. 2
Hi-res Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 I totally forgot that GUTS is coming next week Where is Olivia? 1
Saint James Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 hype matters, sure, but it’s not something you should rely on i think seeing how someone does without hype and clickbait etc is a more important test and i think she will do fine especially with physicals
scottstreet Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 Y’all gotta stop with those subjective metrics 😭. Everytime an artist is about to release something you guys talk about “hype” and most of the times you say it’s zero, but that’s something you can’t quantify until the album release day or after it’s release. 2
Johnny Jacobs Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 Doesn't seem like there is big hype but its there. It's def going to underperform.
Beyonnaise Posted September 1, 2023 Author Posted September 1, 2023 Just now, scottstreet said: Y’all gotta stop with those subjective metrics 😭. I disagree. Ahead of albums like Sour and Midnights, for example, you could palpably feel that there was a lot of anticipation for the albums, based on conversations, online chatter, etc. Numbers alone aren’t everything. 1
CaptainMusic Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 The obsession you have over a 20 yr old popstar is actually sad tbh. 1 1
Both Sides Now Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 It might be a similar situation to SOUR where the album drop kinda creates the hype. I remember Good 4 U was gathering steam by the album release but Deja Vu has stalled. It only gained momentum with the album drop. If it does underperform, Olivia might be pulling an Avril Lavigne with a massive debut and a more lukewarm reception to the sophomore.
Ron Ng Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 I'm not sure but I feel like the hype's dying down, she's kinda overshadowed by The Eras Tour and Barbie (don't get me wrong I love both women). Hope the album is good.

You’re only saying that because you know how big these albums became after their release, even the swifties were saying Taylor killed Midnights hype with those TikToks revealing the tracklist. QueenofCopyPaste Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 The fact that this thread specifically made by the OP asking the same rethorical question shows you there is. 1 1
Just a Gay on ATRL Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 She’ll be fine, people said the same thing about Billie’s HTE era 2 years ago and she is still one of the pillar pop stars of Gen Z. Gen Z artists won’t have opening weeks like girls of the past.
okgo Posted September 1, 2023 Posted September 1, 2023 Isn't the lead single about to repeak (and potentially go #1) in the UK today? 2
