but after 3 years of working on this (acclaimed if this did not happen) album, which is also a baby of the great DJ Koze who worked on the production separately during the lockdown, she is going to get canceled because of the controversial one sentence response about a very controversial topic on Facebook?

i see this bullshit all over the internet, even here. this ******* "lets have a TALK! lets DISCUSS and LEARN!" bullshit. we are so ******* beyond that. either you believe trans lives are important and that they deserve a full life of support where they are able to thrive, or you don't, in which case you are dead wrong. this desperate attempt at a "nuanced" discussion is nothing but trying to appease right wing policy because you deep down kind of agree with it.ROISIN IS A FIFTY YEAR OLD WOMAN! we shouldn't have to teach her that anti-trans propaganda is bullshit, we shouldn't have to have a DISCUSSION about the fact that trans kids receiving gender affirming care in private, discussed with their doctor and families is none of their ******* business. but here we are.

we should and need to be vigilant when it comes to anti-trans voices, even if it comes in the form of a slightly nice seeming musician we like who watched Paris Is Burning once and decided queerness is like.. so cool or whatever, because every single one of them is a drop in a bucket that is getting more and more full. you want to talk about fascism? let's talk about policies that are specifically targeting trans and gender-nonconforming folks and their self expression. get the **** out of here with your tired, nauseating bullshit.

not being able to care about this is cis privilege. it doesn't directly affect you so you don't give a ****. but trust me, you should stand with your trans brother and sisters considering all they have done for your community.

No one disagrees with this. No one on ATRL, and not even Roisin Murphy, which is why she said she was out of line. :rip: I understand you’re upset but at this point you’re just spinning your wheels. What more do you want, since you already believe she’s a worthless piece of **** who wants trans kids to kill themselves?

there are multiple users in this very thread proving the opposite is true. also, have you like... watched the news at all in the last year? im honestly not even sure what to say to this statement because its so out of touch its absurd.

also, what an extremely weird way to twist my words and my disappointment in her. the way some of y'all aren't able to deal with someone being passionate about an important topic and immediately gravitate towards "go touch GRASS!!!" like... I have to laugh, honestly

I meant the people actively engaging with you on atrl right now, not trolls on page 1 of the thread. And I’m well aware of the news, thank you.

No one’s denying your passion. Since it’s necessary and commendable at this time. But what you’re doing with individual members here is weird. Paragraphs lashing out at what you perceive their politics to be is not effecting change. It’s okay if someone thinks the reaction to her comment was out of proportion. It doesn’t make them your natural enemy or a villain or a transphobe. It means they’re thinking differently about it than you are. You can be passionate while still being able to make distinctions.

I agree with you that what Roisin Murphy said was wrong, and that people need to stay out of families’ business, and that her feeling the need to speak on it was weird. I also agree with others that she doesn’t deserve to have her career hounded away from her as punishment. I can think both of those things at once and you’re not gonna tell me it automatically makes me a secret right wing TERF nut job. Pls :deadbanana:

Has anyone tried to talk to her and educate about the topic instead? Are you all going to cancel your conservative (grand)parents who probably don't even support gay marriage, let alone trans people? What about artists who never talk about politics at all?

My conservative grandparents don’t release albums and perform public shows, and if they did, nobody would be forced to attend their shows

DJ Koze could you know, work with Nomi Ruiz instead.

…A key component of fascism is extolling heteronormativity. LGBT are threats the conformity of a fascist nation where deviants to society are eradicated.

The most visible and vulnerable members of LGBT are transgender people. There are very few trans people and even fewer in any position of power. They have become the first targets for new fascists enforcing morality on people’s sexual or gender identity. The easiest way to demonise marginalised sexual groups is always to create propaganda that these groups are corrupting children. Same thing happened in 1980s UK and is happening in Florida today. Section 28, Don’t say gay etc.

Spreading anti-science, fear-mongering propaganda is falling for fascist agendas 101. It deserves to be called out - especially in a singer who has always used queer aesthetics. Seeing both sides or hearing out fascist talking points is useless.

Some of you gays need to read a book because the same people writing and sharing articles about how trans people are destroying society by “transing” children will be coming for gays next.

I hope Róisín takes the time to research this topic and realises how dumb she was.

Apparently DJ Sindri (Róisín's collaborator and friend, a queer man) has said on Instagram and Facebook that he has reached out to her and had a couple lengthy phone calls in regards with this topic. So at least she is willing to listen to a different perspective and does have people around her to inform

Yeah, it was very reassuring to me that her intentions were not hateful that she engaged with Sindri like this. He said that he'd be going into more detail soon but two hours of discussion about it directly with her and involving his trans friends & he seemed quite satisfied with the outcome of that, hence posting to let people know. The narrative is so far askew right now because of her statement and people picking it apart, but I think there's a clear path for her redemption if her heart is in the right place, as she claimed.

I mean in this thread we had size 20 font bolded "Roisin Murphy wants trans kids to kill themselves!" at one point :rip:

Another key component of fascism is silencing dissenting voices and punishing people for perceived transgressions, especially when the offense was a thought and not an action. So everyone in here is capable of drawing parallels where they want to and cherry picking and turning the other way when convenient. Perhaps it’s best to just resist the temptation to fascist-finger-point outright :skull:

It was really sneaky of Roisin to take money from the queer community throughout her career. :coffee2:

Puberty blockers would not be prescribed for decades now to not only trans people, but cis as well if they weren't rigurously tested and later approved as any other medication. She's so... :deadbanana4: They're not handed lightly, especially not without medical supervision to make sure there's no colateral health damage so she can cue with the "but the children!!!!" excuse.

TERF and bigoted at worst, ignorant as hell at best - which is no better considering she has a platform and is saying this publicly, and when the people that put money on her table... 99% belong to the LGBTQ+ community.

you did not just say this in response to people being called out for trying to legitimize "both sides" about people's right to exist :skull: do you not think that trans people have / are experiencing that?

despite the great strides the LGBTQ+ community has made, transphobia is still the status quo so if anyone is the dissenting opinion, its the people standing up for LGBTQ+ rights :deadbanana4:

i'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt but the far right girls and the fear mongers love accusing other people (typically leftists, those passionate about social justice) of being fascists when in actuality, its those same far right folk that actively promote fascist talking points under the guise of free speech.

The “dissenting voice” I was referring to – not legitimizing – was Roisin Murphy, a flop hag on her personal socials, not far right lawmakers or terf “activists”. My comment was about cherry picking definitions and inventing intentions. But you knew that.

a "flop hag" who's espousing rhetoric that has been

1. created and promoted by said far right politicians and TERF activists :deadbanana4:

2. the standard for centuries as a result of past far right lawmakers and TERFS

I’m good on research thank you. You quoted me like I defended her, which I didn’t. I pointed out that one side in here was cherry picking what was fascistic about the other side’s argument, ignoring what was plainly fascistic about their own, and this was to make a point about the rabbit hole of that kind of finger-pointing in a venue that really isn’t right for that kind of charged discourse, and I suggested that it was for the best we moving on from calling each other fascists altogether. It’s perfectly reasonable.

Hysterical, ridiculous and unfair overreaction to the most innocuous of pushback. Totally expected some huge bigoted attack to justify this kind of reaction and it's just not there at all. Can't wait for the album Roisin :heart2:

This “if her heart is in the right place” rhetoric doesn’t sit well with me… when people spew transphobic, homophobic, racist, misogynistic or hateful speech and justify it by wrapping it up in a bow saying it comes from a place of love doesn’t mean it is, it’s coming from a place of prejudice, intolerance and ignorance, not love!

She might be a "flop" or "hag" etc etc. But she still has a platform she has to use more carefully, not to share Facebook-lite conspiracy theories (with 0 logic back up) that potentially harm and stigmatized the trans community even further :michael:

Yes, she's entitled to her own opinion, but even if ONE trans person gets **** or stigma from her post, even one, it's harmful.
