Leigh-Anne f/ Ayra Starr - "My Love"

She’s my favorite out of the LM group. But she’s proving there was a reason they were group together during Kelly Rowlands X-Factor. And because she’s been in a group for so long she hasn’t developed her own lane.

I wish her luck! But she’s gonna need to tap into some personal or whatever spiritual artistic inspiration she has so she can and really stand out by being herself. Maybe she’s not an artist but a great performer and can’t afford the best of the best anymore?

The song and the video are great. The problem is the lack of visibility, poor timing, her lack of personality (even in LM she was always the least charismatic and insightful in interviews tbh) misstep with wasting all the lead single hype on a b-side at best song like DSL. Of course, her not being white/ethnically ambiguous and being in her 30s don't help.

Y'all keep saying how performances don't really push a song up in the charts anymore but that's still literally how new artists break-ish into the mainstream. These good performances are distributed on social media platforms, they generate interest on the artist, helps their brand and name-building, etc. the goal is to catch the attention of tastemakers in these spaces cause they all help in gaining momentum for future releases.

I didn't enjoy it unfortunately.

Part of this may be because I hate 'Paint The Town Red' but 'My Love' was also kinda blah. She sounded better in the PTTR though.

I enjoy the songs she has released (DSL/ML) but the performances just aren't clicking with me.

Yeah the live lounge was not it. Sorry. I wanted to like it but something wasn’t clicking.

I think she didn’t sound confident especially during the beginning of ML. It sounded off key but she settled as the song went on. I notice that her runs can get a bit sloppy too. Less is just more and the more she tries to run, the messier it sounds. She has a pretty tone and sometimes that’s enough.

Also I wanted to hear HER. Too much backing singers during both songs.

Yeah she was definitely off during My Love.

All the covers/acoustics she does are very same-y and safe.

She ate that cover up tbh, I loved the arrangement

That PTTR cover :rip:

Towards the end of LM I thought she had really improved vocally but idk now it kinda sounds like she can't sing :dies:

She needs a full big dance performance of my love. Whens the EMA's?

Her first full 'big dance' performance should be on 28th October 2023 at the Kiss Haunted House Party.

I just hope they are not like the Vevo Studio ones she recorded.

This is such a huge let down . The lives .. :rip:

Such a pitty really ... i imagine this after the Glory Days era could have smashed so hard and the live performances could have been crazy

This. Wasn't she semi-confirmed for Strictly?

In general, I appreciate the robustness of the band-feel of the My Love live versions (I actually love it), but I'm literally fed up of these girls and their teams consistently not playing up their strongest weapon. In Leigh's case, her dancing.

Music is not a meritocracy and it's literally only the rare few who will ever truly smash the charts. That much I've made peace with after years and years of seeing acts come and go.

With Live Lounge, it really is a mic and band setup. So, she gets a pass. But Vevo and that Capital special there was no excuse.

Much as I don't like to compare, Tyla is someone who is doing it right in the current climate. Whether it's a TV show or live gig, she brings her "performance track" and two dancers and gets busy with it. I can't be convinced that Leigh's full band and backing vocalist setup works out more budget-effective.

It was always going to be an uphill battle, but Leigh "not happening solo" will be really irritating if it's (mainly) because of moves that could easily be remedied with a bit more strategy.

So far, the music has been "great" especially My Love, as has the physical focus of both single launches to offset her streaming shortcomings. Besides that, it pains to say that they've kind of botched things with My Love. And it's 85% to do with strategy.

* Not centralizing dance as her "thing" live. Let's be real. Much we clap for her vocal improvements, vocals are not where Leigh's appeal lies. She was the strongest dancer in LM and we've yet to actually see her dance live during her PROMOTIONAL performances.

* Love Ayra, but the commercial benefit of the collab is all hers (not Leigh's). Leigh needed a streaming magnet to offset her streaming shortcomings as she's effectively a new artist. In the Afrobeats space, may be a tall order, but the likes of Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Davido have all charted internationally have have monthly streams that would have made them a wise investment.

* Can't stress it enough, but the promo for ML has been too scattered. Everything she's done so far could and should have been condensed into a two-week frame for maximum impact. Putting aside the fact it should have dropped in the summer, if October promo is all they could lock in, then the single should have dropped in October. A handful of things every couple of weeks is not going to do much.

Only thing that i can think of is her management/label isnt doing their job promotion wise. Also, she should be on chicken shop, ect.

And why doesnt she just film her own performance like chloexhalle did during covid

That's the thing. I don't even wanna shade her. But she has a fairly middle-of-the-road, "nicey-nice", literal girl-next-door persona. So not sure she'd shine on a show like Chicken Shop Date. A show that (kinda problematically) largely works by playing off the grit and "Urbaness" of guests against the Becky-ness of the host. In the most polite way possible, but I'm not sure there's enough...contrast between Leigh and Amelia to make that work.

This.

To her team's slight defense though, they will have needed the data they have now to see that she's essentially starting fresh as a new artist.

Before now, they may have been banking on her having at least an intermediate level of support / good grace coming from the LM fandom. Something that only worked for DSL. I say that to say, self-funded/released performances may have been judged too grass-roots for her initially knowing the platforms she probably still has at her fingertips. But it's definitely an angle worth exploring for whatever her next release is.

Come to think of it, why isn't there a dance-video edit of the music video to try and give it a second wind?

Let’s try an Anne Marie “Rockabye” x Britney “My Baby” type ballad for fall/winter

Leigh doing Chicken Shop date? Absolutely not. She would be dragged for being boring. If it was LM then definitely. Something about them having each other made them shine, funny etc. Her interviews these days are so stale.

Great point earlier about Tyla. She is doing it right and I’ve already seen 5 performances of her doing her Water dance so again, visibility is key. A good performance could go viral on Twitter and tik tok and help sell the song.

I wish Leigh well but I’m just not excited about her solo career as I thought I’d be.

i fully agree, it’s weird how plain she is now. the Doja cover should have been fun and energetic but it was just ok.

If we're being honest, that persona is currently being filled by Maya Jama and she was quite good on Chicken Shop Date. I feel Leigh-Anne's problem isn't her persona, but that she's never really had much of a personality beyond being nice. I feel like even within Little Mix, that was all she was given. Jade and Perrie (and Jesy tbh) always had more outgoing personas that shone more on the non-music related moments.
