it was totally unnecessary for him to wear a prosthetic nose, especially when the actual person's nose isn't large. it does come across as anti-semitic and portraying stereotypes about jewish people. i doubt this will cause mass outrage though, it'll probably just be something twitter is upset about.

The obvious best makeup Oscar pandering attempt  has backfired! :clap3:

Why are people blaming Bradley when it was probably the costume departments decision? Surprised no one has mentioned that yet.

Because Bradley Cooper is the director. Jake Gyllenhall, an actual Jewish actor, wanted to be the one to direct and star in this movie, but somehow Bradley Cooper ended up walking away with the rights to make the movie. By putting on a prosthetic to look “more Jewish,” Bradley Cooper is essentially turning Jewish people into a caricature. Helen Mirren put on prosthetics to look more like Golda Meir in the new Golda movie coming out, and she managed to do it without putting on a big nose. Being Jewish is an ethnicity as well as a religion, yes, but there are many different ways to “look” Jewish than the Nazi stereotype of obnoxiously big nose. :katie:

Bradley's actual nose looks basically identical to Bernstein's so yeah this is very dumb

I agree, but to call this anti-semitism is a reach. No one is harming anyone.

It really does seem like this. :katie: And it’s unfortunate cause Bradley is a great director as we saw with ASIB, and this movie looks fantastic from the trailer. :katie: Too bad they had to ruin it with a nose.

Not sure what you’re trying to prove. They put prosthetics all over Mirren’s face to create Golda Meir, whereas Bradley Cooper put a honker on his nose to play Leonard Bernstein when his own would have sufficed.

Where I see the issue is that yes Bernstein had a larger nose for sure but his nose is not anywhere close to be as angular or pointy as Bradley's prosthetic is. Bradley's prosthetic does not look like a human's nose, it looks like a cartoon character. It looks like a caricature. Bernstein's does not.

There's also the question of....why was it really necessary to make Bradley Cooper's nose look ethnically Jewish? If he was going to play the role, then play the role, I don't think his nose needs to look that way in order for the audience to understand the character is Jewish. If they felt the need for the actor to appear ethnically Jewish then why not just cast an actor who is ethnically Jewish?

I'm not usually one to say "oh an actor shouldn't play such and such role for such and such reason" (except for things like race which...duh). I don't think there's an issue with straight people playing queer characters or people of one nationality playing another etc. But I do sort of feel that for something like this, when the subject is as sensitive and drenched in historical issues, it may be better to not have someone who's not ethnically Jewish putting on makeup to portray someone who is.

Ye it's obvs not the same intensity, but why can't we just cast white people and have them play black people? BECAUSE DUH lmao

in that same vain please don't give someone a wonky prosthetic just get an actually big nosed person if it's that relevant visually to you

At the same time its like this actor maybe really fit the vibe and they didnt want to remove an iconic feature of his, and rather than being seen as something negative it's more like paying tribute

tbrh i feel like i actually dont care

I can’t believe you’re really trying to have a nose-off :skull: no one’s saying the movie is going to be bad or that Bradley is evil, it’s just a weird choice when Leonard Bernstein didn’t have such a big nose his whole life.

It’s almost like people’s noses grow after age 20

So why is he wearing a large nose for young Bernstein? :skull: This is such a pointless interaction.

The prosthetic is a bit unnecessary tbh.

But we really needed this outrage for this as well :

This conversation is seriously so boring. But congrats now I'll be distracted by it the whole film 😂

I have to agree. The guy he's portraying doesn't even have a big nose. It's obvious they wanted to make Bradley more Jewish by giving him that nose.

Called it the minute I saw the trailer :toofunny3: as others have pointed out, his nose would've been just fine.

Daddy Bernstein deserved better

The funniest part is that Bradley Cooper got a nose job like twenty years ago :bibliahh:

Anyway :tornado: While it may not be entirely accurate for the earlier scenes, the prosthesis does makes him resemble the Leonard Bernstein most people remember from the real-life man's media presence in later years. It is a movie. A dramatic portrayal.
