"Pop's middle class" is such a problematic statement like... whoever wrote this is a mess and indirectly insulted their middle class readers. Yikes.

It just seems like such an unfortunate way to think about music consumption like it's a ranking system. These writers really suck all of the fun and pure joy out of music sometimes.

This. And the industry has the gall to complain about a lack of stars, and then they write about pop artists who actually care about their art like this :skull:

What’s the point here? :coffee2: that these artists are odd because they’re “pop stars” that aren’t popular? I may never know with the paywall.

CRJ being included in this mess is so f*cking disrespectful and unnecessary :coffee2: as if she isn't outdoing all her peers in quality alone.

But I guess being able to sell "screen view only" tickets for $500+ is more impressive than being a "middle class pop star" :sistrens:

I guess the writer was about to miss the deadline and improvised this because…….. lol

NYT themselves hype these names :rip: Also they’re just pop niche. They have always existed….

Then just promote those artist more. Interesting that executives are depressed that they can’t make money off new artist yet here we are have entire group of dedicated and talented pop acts that get very little support or funding for there projects.

After reading the whole thing, this really isn't a drag.

It's more about how, as a result of pop's dominance on the chart declining, being a "pop" star has become more about a statement of intent and an aesthetic than it about commercial performance - and how a lot of these artists are using the genre to create meta-commentary on what it means to be "pop" at all. It also talks about how it often feels as if a pop star's massive celebrity exists separate to their commercial performance (all of which is true). "Middle-class" isn't being used as an insult, more-so just a description of a pop star who is in the middle of the pack in terms of popularity.

Yes, all of that is obvious for those who live in online stan spaces, but that isn't who the article is written for.

Would the publication that double-endorsed Amy Klobuchar and Elizabeth Warren for president lie? :emofish:

People messaged me years ago about her taking advantage of fans for free labor basically.

She was always "hiring" and/or "collaborating" with fans so it's not at all hard to imagine that lines were crossed.

I mean let's be real here - the tastemakers, the real influencers, the people pushing artistic boundaries and toying with polarizing sounds are NOT going to be the most popular artists in the world.

People like Caroline Polachek are not making music for the masses - but god knows those that do make music for the masses (Adele, Taylor, Ed Sheeran, Bieber) will take cues from what the "cool kids" are doing and demurely implement it.

If you're a "middle class pop star" that means you're squarely in your lane doing something special.

So what's the point of this article? Of course i didn't read all that as it's behind a paywall

Internet stans can't praise an artist because they are not commercially popular?

This article made me think of Stand Your Ground. We should bring that back!

A lot of these “middle class” artists seem to be happier than most “upper class” artists. Rita per example seem to be doing very well. She can still get hits in the UK and she just married the love of her life. She’s happy and that’s what should matter the most, not that she isn’t doing a stadium tour.

Kim, Sabrina, Ava, Bebe, Rita being put in the same box as Caroline and Charli XCX feels disrespectful

Middle-class means more than just social classes :rip:
