The problem with Lorde is that her life is not very interesting. It was in 2013. But now it is not.

 

So she has nothing to write about and no incentive to pour her soul into songwriting. She has to resort to drugs (Solar Power) or partying (Melodrama) to make her life interesting enough to write about.
