Anti Hero very unconventional lyricism and imagery is part of what makes it riskier than Hung Up.

Confessions is much much much better. It's an absolute classic. Midnights is objectively bigger. But it's definitely not better. It's so much worse.

I don’t think Hung Up was particularly risky but the production on COADF was a timeless contribution to 2000’s Dance Pop. 

 

AH is a 3 minutes song with a meme chorus and pseudo intelligent phony verses and the album’s sound aesthetic heavily borrows from Melodrama and sounds like a lite version but this time her juvenile metaphors are even more juvenile and lazy.

Who cares? It’s streaming eras and Midnights is the fastest female album to reach 6B in Spotify, did COADF make any record in pure sales era?

Anyway, Midnights is the #2 most successful album released in 2022-2023 while COADF is #9 most successful album released in 2004-2005, Midnights is way bigger

The only question here that’s really objective in any way is the “bigger” question. While ChartMasters is a somewhat contentious source, I’ll use them as a useful reference. According to their method of calculating units, Confessions sits at around 13.4 million units. Midnights is already at 11.5 million units while still charting quite well, including in the top five in the US; it will surpass Confessions this year.

 

Having the US fully on your side really helps in terms of overall commercial impact. Confessions is maybe close to 2 million units there and hasn’t reached double platinum eligibility, while Midnights is already eligible for 5x platinum and will eventually be diamond-eligible in the US. To put things into further perspective, Midnights surpassed Confessions’ total units in the US in about two weeks.

What’s your point of comparing the pure sales of albums from different era? I’m not stupid so I use IFPI yearly position and SPS which are the only meaningful data here

streaming era = / = sales era.

 

COADF sold 10 million copies which comprises 80% of its total consumption. 

 

There is no comparison on sales. On streaming Taylor is ahead. We need to separate the two things. Hung Up would be at 2 billion streams as well if it was released in the streaming era judging by it hitting #1 in 40+ countries in 2005. Confessions would be at 15 billion streams if it was a streaming era album. <3

I am not comparing those two entities. Swifties are doing that. 

 

Madonna has the sales, Taylor the streams. One is not like the other. A comparison is impossible. Anyway based on peaks and impact, COADF is winning with ease.
