The demand is literally 10x the availability of tickets (if not more). She could literally gross 10B with this tour if she wanted. There are numerous cinemas everywhere, but there's only one Taylor Swift. The New York Times did a very long and insightful podcast precisely on this point and I couldn't help but agree I'm sorry but think about this for second. The average movie ticket price in the US is $10.45. An average Eras tour ticket goes for more than a hundred dollars. There is an estimated 861,278,233 of tickets sold at the domestic box office this year. If you divided the Barbie box office by the average movie ticket price you get 14,354,066 tickets sold. Highest attended tour ever - "Ed Sheeran ÷ Tour" - 8,796,567 attendance Barbie domestic opening weekend by ticket price - 14,354,066 attendance According to Pollstar the Eras tour has achieved 1,186,314 attendace in its first 22 shows in the US with an average ticket price of 253.56 per person with an estimated gross of 300,804,808. According to the projection in the article the tour in its entire global run will achieve a gross of 1.4b. If we apply that average ticket price to the total projected gross you get 5,533,596 attendance. A number that is still nowhere near the domestic only opening weekend of Barbie. A movie that is playing globally and will continue on to gross more than a billion. A gross of lets say 400m domestic for Barbie gets it to 38,277,511 attendance in the US only. If like you say the Eras tour grossed 10 billion dollars worldwide that would get it to 39,525,691 tickets sold at an average price of 253, surpassing a 400m domestic only gross for Barbie (a movie projected to gross >1b globally). There is one Taylor Swift only sure, but no tour in existence can compare to a juggernaut movie at the box office. It is just not possible in any way. Titanic had an attendance of 389,781,381 globally, Avengers: Endgame had 351,491,996. Edited July 24, 2023 by mystery

Arrows Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 Both are known almost universally by their demographics so it’s hard to compare
Gwendolyn Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 Both are big in pop culture so I don't get this comparison at all. Barbie will have an impact on film history and Eras will have an impact on music history.

Your whole argument is based on the premise that seeing a movie = biggest event of your year. (Don't forget the title of this thread). It's only the fact that someone is willing to spend hundreds of dollars to see someone live that is evidence of greater impact vs. throwing away 10$ on a movie ticket or a burger. It just doesn't have the same impact. You can watch hundreds a movies a year, you can probably only see a few select people live in the same period. Also don't forget the insane promo Barbie movie had in the past few months. Frankfully I never seen a more star-studded soundtrack with so many high budget music videos release for just 1 movie. The amount of random promo all over the place from barbie burgers to renaming of metro station into barbie sounding ones to countless other ones. All of that vs 1 tweet from Taylor. Barbie movie will be just another movie for absolute most people by next week. The Eras Tour would remain a highlight of the year for many years to come for most people judging by the hysteria it causes. This tour and Taylor this year in general is an enormous and neverending event. Truly not in the same league. 1
Popboi. Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 (edited) The biggest movie and the biggest tour of the year, how and why do we compare them A movie is able to reach more people than a concert tour by default, but The Eras Tour is very much the biggest concert tour ever done. This tour and Taylor this year in general is an enormous and neverending event. Truly not in the same league. "Barbie won't be talked about outside the opening weekend + maybe the week after. By the end of the year it will be the biggest female tour ever, and next year the biggest tour of all time. Barbie can enjoy the biggest opening of 2023 (so far) though." You based your initial argument on gross I'm sorry to tell you but a tour does in fact end. The Eras tour is happening right now, it is a big event and is being attended by hundreds of thousands and eventually several million people but the tour will end. When the tour ends there will probably be a tour film sure, but it won't have nearly the same demand as a genuine blockbuster does. The highest grossing tour film is Never Say Never with 99,034,125 worldwide if Taylor released a tour film I could see her beat that but still nowhere near a blockbuster. Barbie will continue to sell physicals, make a big splash on streaming and continue to be seen by millions in the coming years. Its impact on the movie industry alone this decade will be one to watch for. I am sorry to tell you but attendance is a valid metric of measuring impact, if Taylor tickets were suddenly 10 dollars cheap her tour still wouldn't be attended by as many people as Barbie. There is a limit to the capacity that a tour can generate, sure you can fill out stadiums but you cannot continue on to do so eternally, demand isn't infinite. Like I said even if Taylor did this tour x10 even it still wouldn't generate nearly the same amount of people as an actual movie does. Eras Tour will be the biggest tour ever and in that area she is most definitely breaking records and setting a new impact for what a tour can do but at the end of the day a tour is not in the same league as a film and it never will be. State of Grace. Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 (edited) Movies will always be bigger than tours/music related events. Cut the crap. These comparisons don't work. The fact that Eras Tour is being compared to BARBIE alone says a lot. Edited July 24, 2023 by State of Grace. 2

sasashite Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 Barbie just because movies are bigger cultural events than tours. Eras Tour washes every single tour in recent memory. Barbie is washed by Avengers, Frozen, Harry Potter, Titanic, Jurassic Park and etc. 1

Saintlor Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 (edited) I know this is a little off topic, but even though films are bigger than music, its worth noting that even A List actors (Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie etc) are nowhere near as relevant and make nowhere near as much money as A List singers like Rihanna, Taylor, Beyonce etc People care about singers much more Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were paid $15M each for this movie after filming it for a huge amount of time and promoting it Taylor likely makes more than this in one night of the Eras tour from tickets/merch Edited July 24, 2023 by Saintlor
