The internet has been the greatest and worst thing, there is no singular culture. The reason why a Britney and Xtina VMA performance from 2003 can get 15 pages in 2023 is because that was at a time when there was a singular culture... pop culture now or what's left of it isn't just one thing - it's split into so many diff things and people live in their own algorithm. So OP, it's not even so much music is getting bad... people live in vastly diff worlds, thanks to the internet you can personalize everything - that's good in most ways but bad for music, movies, pop culture, etc. Exactly. Gone were the days where we'd discuss artists performing at VMA'S all week leading up to the actual event during school. We had 1 or 2 outlets for all genres. Even if you were to sit and watch a rapper perform you'd have to sit through a pop performance and you'd have an opinion about it regardless. You simple get the performance on YouTube now instead. This does lower pop culture to the pits.
Mr. Mendes Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 It's neither. You're just not looking in the right places for music. In the streaming era, we've gotten more saturated than ever with quick low effort singles that are trying to snatch a tiktok hit. But, the streaming era also allows us the chance to access more music than ever. Instead of turning eyes to what is trending and heavily playlisted, explore playlists that are based around under the radar artists. Explore Spotify's similar artist or radio feature. Venture into places devoid of the songs trying to be hits, and you'll find that music has really never been better. 1
Devin Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 Its a mixture of both. Some of us grew up in a generation when artists still had to work hard, have actual talent, and prove themselves. Since 2020 and Tik Tok, mediocrity has oversaturated the music industry. I stream some of the material out there but I found myself streaming underground talent & older gen music.
Pop Life Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 Getting old begins as a state of mind, and losing interest in new music is one of the first signs that yours is beginning to close off, so yes you're getting old.
brenda-walsh Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 you're just getting old. there's lots of great music being made, pop culture is still very much alive, and artists are as talented today as yesteryear 1
SuperCiC1 Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 A lot of you are old and clearly only or mostly listen to white artists, so you get what you deserve.
Minogue Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 Well you got into GM’s discography, it makes sense everything sounds mediocre
Kiss It Better Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 there are good music in the past 3 years but this year specifically is bad
Alldeezy Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 idk any in the OP other than Flowers, maybe you just listening to the wrong music, good music is out there still.
Flower Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 No, Western Pop did got boring as the past few years compared to pop peak around 2008-2014, but honestly it is actually starting to get better and fun again with new acts like Olivia, Billie, Doja, and etc. Pop acts like Taylor, Carly, Charli and etc are all releasing bops and bops. Kpop is also more fun than ever if you still want the brainless addicting bops. But looking at the songs you listed you dont really look like a trash pop kinda guy. Then you just gotta find the music that you like out there and seek them. Maybe step out of your comfort zone more.

A lot of today's pop music is made for the young TikTok crowd, less than 3 minutes, no bridge, minimalistic production, etc. They like it short and simple. If you're not in that demographic, you probably won't get a whole lot of enjoyment out of it. 5 hours ago, Ryan said: You’re getting old. Embrace it. Not everything is for you. It's not just about getting old. Statistics tell us that new music consumption is at an all-time low. People are just not tuning in, and part of that can be that new music is just not that good. I mean, Vampire and Flowers? Please.
Bosque Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 you’re getting old 6 hours ago, Leppie said: I used to always think that, but now I firmly believe that new mainstream music is just garbage So are you
pavi Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 Good music has always been a task to find, but it's still there Cover art shows the vibe perfectly Beautiful song about heartbreak and addiction Pop perfection imo The new Jessie Ware album is a MASTERPIECE Top 3 build-ups of the year The charts might change and not be your thing anymore, but that doesn't has much to do with age, it has to do with taste. Search and you'll find!
JayG Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 6 hours ago, =NEX= said: Getting old. People get less and less responsive to new music past the age of 25 and tend to remain within their comfort zone both sonically and in terms of artists they used to like prior to that age. At the same time they start looking down on and downplay the quality of newer music/artists/genres. It requires a lot of work, active discovery and an open mind to continue getting into and actually being able to enjoy new music into your 30s and beyond. This is literally false lmao. I listen to new music ALL the time and some of my friends have literally started PRODUCING at in their 30's.
JayG Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 (edited) Doja, Tinashe, RAYE, Kim, theres a LOT of new music out there. People dont just die after 30 lmao. Most of our favs producers are in their 50's still making smashes. Age is a number. I think its subjective tbh. Madonna didnt make Confessions until she was like 50. Each person is different. You should go digging for new music. Theres a lot of amazing stuff out there. Also, othersa genres. Calvin is dropping bangers, Uzis stuff is really good etc. Edited July 9, 2023 by JayG
jjmed59 Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 youre getting old and you probably dont have time to be looking for new music as much as you may have when you were younger. lots of great releases this year imo
Solaria Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 Don’t let them fool you into the ‘you’re old its just nostalgia’ argument. Pop as we STAN it is dying. Labels aren’t pushing superstars anymore, they’re pushing faux relatable stars. No more larger than life stars, but artists who need to develop a close relationship with their fans. Indie, bedroom and alt-pop is winning ground everywhere. This is the absolute worst time to be a pop stan 1

No one was expecting it and all the white people/non Spanish speakers were not loving the song It was my first time hearing the song and didn’t like it either. Years later as I got older is when I started to like it.
Wicked Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 Neither, you don't have the motivation to explore beyond the top 40. Yall getting hurt the worst with this because this site was built around pop monoculture and that don't exist no more. Time to broaden the musical palette.
Anye Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 (edited) I even didn’t like autotune. Now with AI? Lets just say I am really really grateful i was born in the 90s. Edited July 9, 2023 by Anye 1
Afterglow Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 No today's artists just lack the same drive and element of surprise. Lots of things sound the same. The quality has changed, hence why older artists are all of a sudden having successful comebacks and pop culture literally survives off Millennials celebrities. Look who the biggest pop star in the world is. Times are changing to humans being less interesting and it's true. 1
