tili33 Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 this year is a mess, except for Miley's flowers, Loreen's tattoo, and getting into George Michael's discography. here are some links to some stuff I liked this year. drop yours... 2
réveuse Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 I believe that we aren't getting used to the new stuff since we are all just nostalgic for the old and familiar (I feel the same way aswell).
Big Bad Wolf Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 (edited) Yeah, I feel like I’m just old and can’t totally click with most of the younger artists today so I’m content with Lana’s discography because it’s so expansive + all the albums I already love, and lately I’ve been going back decades checking out different types of music and it feels more refreshing. Onyxmage Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 This is my current mini playlist. Maybe you will like one of these songs.
Tropez Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 You’re just getting old. There’s great music being put out right. 1

I used to always think that, but now I firmly believe that new mainstream music is just garbage
Gladiator Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 (edited) I would encourage you to seek new music out. There's tons of amazing music being released. I usually search for user made 2023 (or current year) playlists of album releases, then I pull whatever ones that album artwork looks interesting into a to listen to playlist and on a free day, I work through that playlist and add the albums I like to my playlist of albums of 2023. So far I have about 60 albums on there that I have added. About 15 of them were albums I was anticipating and the rest were albums I found through searching. Near the end of the year, I'll work through that playlist and make another for my favorites that I'll revisit. Edited July 9, 2023 by Gladiator 1
elevate Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 I don't think it's about age. Pop culture is dead and the way you find and consume music is very different to how it used to be. It's just about finding the right avenues for you. 4
NEX Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 Getting old. People get less and less responsive to new music past the age of 25 and tend to remain within their comfort zone both sonically and in terms of artists they used to like prior to that age. At the same time they start looking down on and downplay the quality of newer music/artists/genres. It requires a lot of work, active discovery and an open mind to continue getting into and actually being able to enjoy new music into your 30s and beyond. 6 1
PoisonCandy Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 It's probably just us getting old. A lot of today's pop music is made for the young TikTok crowd, less than 3 minutes, no bridge, minimalistic production, etc. They like it short and simple. If you're not in that demographic, you probably won't get a whole lot of enjoyment out of it. 1
TouchinFree Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 Both. But as cliche as this may sound, Pop culture is hanging by a thread. If it wasn't for TikTok making some pop songs viral every now and then, no one would give a damn. Radio and tv are officially dead for the newer generations.
Buffy Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 It depends on who you’re asking. Every generation will say their music is the best. I think music died after 2006. Taylor is really the only I follow because she makes the kind of music I enjoyed pre-2006
flower moon Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 i think its both tbh but this year has truly felt like a bland year for music. at least mainstream music anyway.
ATRL Administrator Ryan Posted July 9, 2023 ATRL Administrator Posted July 9, 2023 You’re getting old. Embrace it. Not everything is for you. 3
theweekend Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 probably 2023 has been one of the best years for new releases since I can't remember when. I think you just don't have the references because there's a lot of GREAT records in every genre and you just need to know they're out there. for example some of them: caroline polachek - desire I turn into you kelela - raven kali uchis - red moon in venus janelle monae - the age of pleasure raye - my 21st century blues amaarae - fountain baby (96 on metacritic and second best reviewed female album of all time) kaytramine - kaytramine jessie ware - that! feels good (you've already mentioned it on OP) Melanie Martinez - portals Alison goldfrapp - the love invention Jake shears - last man dancing and great singles with no parent album released yet/standout cuts from bad/meh albums/bops that may not be quality songs but we can bop to it AMAKA - cruisin/leave it behind tove lo - I like u Kylie Minogue - padam padam bebe rexha - stars jorja smith - try me pink pantheress - boy's a liar pt2 Shania twain - giddy up FLO - fly girl tove lo - borderline latto - lottery latto - put it on da floor og/remix loreen - tattoo (mentioned on op) pnau/troye Sivan - you know what I need calvin harris - miracle azealia banks - new bottega doechii - what it is BIA - I'm that ***** sam smith - lose you coi leray - make my day 4
DamianSolo Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 Mainstream music is just getting bad and has been for a couple of years now. There's a ton of music releasing that I still do love, but I hate most of all that's being played on Top 40 radio—aside from a handful of songs. Hardly any of the new artists appeal to me the way that older artists did when they very first debuted in the mid-2000s through the 2010s. There does need to be a shift in mainstream music.
Mike91 Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 There's a ton of great music being released, but much like what's happened with television and movies, there's so much to choose from in the streaming era that most of it is getting ignored and people are laser focusing in on what they personally like. There isn't a monolith on pop culture anymore that used to exist back in the day. That's why the biggest artists from 10 years ago are still the biggest artists today, with very few exceptions of younger acts breaking through.
Miss Show Business Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 (edited) It's a combination of both. I'm sure we all have our will develop a sweet spot for certain music during certain times. For me it was when I was a younger teen with less responsibilities and thoroughly enjoyed top 40 radio. I feel like we also tend to only remember the "good" music. There's good and bad music objectively in any given time period, but as time goes on, people only keep streaming what was usually regarded as good. It also depends on your personal tastes. I'm sure there are people who love big ballads who are very nostalgic about the 90s, like there are dance music fans nostalgic about the 2008-2011 when it filled pop radio. It really all depends? I think we'll see alot of these patterns repeat themselves as time goes on and how different people view certain times. Edited July 9, 2023 by Miss Show Business 1
Gorjesspazze9 Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 It is getting bad. Mixing has gotten better, but the actual music has dramatically declined 2
bad guy Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 If you take nostalgia out of it majority of the hit songs you grew up on are not that great. I mean there were great songs in the late 00s-2010s but a lot of the hits I used to love as a kid are unlistenable now. Only a dozen or so hits from each decade stand the test of time, but popular music even back then wasn’t that great either for the most part. There’s exceptions of course (specific artists, bands, etc.) but as a whole people have always complained about new music being bad as they get older when in reality nostalgia is most likely just clouding your judgement. There’s a lot of great music still you just have to find it. The only thing that has changed is that radio is unwilling to play anything outside the same 20 songs in their rotation, and I feel like there has been a shift in the music industry where execs haven’t been able to figure out streaming so instead of pushing forth new artists and investing in fresh talent, they go the cheap and lazy route by milking a viral song for all its worth for quick cash before moving onto the next. It’s why only four (?) female artists have become big names (Billie, Dua, Doja, Olivia) in the last decade. And when it comes to bands it’s even worse 2
Jude Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 I have no problem with the current state of music. I always embrace new trends and evolution.
GentleEarthquake Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 You're just getting old. A lot of amazing albums were released recently 1

Like it's not even nostalgia at this point, pop culture truly is dead (mostly) these days. The internet has been the greatest and worst thing, there is no singular culture. The reason why a Britney and Xtina VMA performance from 2003 can get 15 pages in 2023 is because that was at a time when there was a singular culture... pop culture now or what's left of it isn't just one thing - it's split into so many diff things and people live in their own algorithm. So OP, it's not even so much music is getting bad... people live in vastly diff worlds, thanks to the internet you can personalize everything - that's good in most ways but bad for music, movies, pop culture, etc. 3
