Bears01 Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 Garth Brooks and Eminem would be her only contenders in that regard
Odette Violet Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 We have Madonna, Mariah, Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, Beyoncé etc. Maybe in white murika 2 5
jdanton2 Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 Taylor has actually released as many album as MJ did as a solo artist . he released more with his brothers that he did solo. she is on her way to passing him .
Disconnect Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 (edited) Did you forget about Madonna, Britney, Beyoncé, etc.? don't discredit their success lol. All the people saying Rihanna lol, yeah, she's also big but she's retired so IDK why you still consider her tbh. I like artists who care enough about their craft and won't just retire like her. besaid Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 No, she doesn't feel influential, meaningful or innovative. She's just a commercial force but so what, so is McDonalds and Target. But I wouldn't say any of those things are influential and culturally resonant like MJ who had both. 3

Even though Taylor IS one of the biggest artists of all time, without caring about the exact position she has on the list, the most impressive feat she's achieved is longevity. People constantly come in here saying how this or that artist's peak was bigger and blah blah blah but the hard and acid truth is, most of them had huge moments yes, but they all had a downfall and their success just went away (sadly tbh). You can't stand the fact that there's someone like Taylor who's managed to stay relevant for so long and her fame and success keep increasing just because she is a really hard worker and has talent, not because she's superior or something like that. Gaga and Katy for example, take a lot of time to put out music and they don't really try anymore to be popstars and that's OK, maybe if they tried they could still be big but they just AREN'T. It doesn't matter if Katy's or Gaga's peaks were bigger (and they weren't tbh lol), because they're not musically relevant anymore (I'm talking about recent songs) and that's just facts, when was the last time they had a top 10 hit/#1? The same goes for Rih. Gaga is still a successful actress and I think Joker 2.0 will smash but she hasn't had any recent hits although it is understandable because of her movies. I love her tbh, this isn't shade but it's just the truth. WHY can't you just stand the fact that Taylor is the biggest artist on the planet right now? lol, I mean just look at the difference between #1 and #2: https://kworb.net/itunes/

Where are the real impactful pop stars now? It seems like Madge and MJ were the last ones with such commitment. 1

MJ and Madonna kicked down doors and changed things first so they'll always be on another level than acts like Taylor or Billie who don't really feel culturally or socially game-changing or like movers and shakers. I mean, the most controversial thing Taylor's ever done is say she didn't vote for Trump. Madonna was fighting with the pope in the 1500s and marching with HIV and AIDS groups during a time when gays were literal biblical lepers. It's only comparable if you're 17 and have no historical knowledge or cultural memory. OT: Oh! And acts like Madonna and MJ did all their racial, social and cultural barrier breaking while selling millions more records than Taylor has ever or will ever sell. Edited July 10, 2023 by besaid

Gaga was big as well but sadly she isn't paying as much attention to music as she used to, and that's the only reason why she's not on their level IMO. Bey is also huge but the fact that she doesn't write any of her music has always been disappointing to me and automatically puts her below the others on my list. I get your point about Madge, but I still think Taylor is a talented songwriter.

How is she not culturally resonant when everything about her since the VMAs 2009 has been a major news story in America? Like she is easily one of the most culturally resonant figures in American media in the last 50 years. Everything she does is major news. What awards she wins or loses. Her relationships. Her politics or her lack of politics. Her choice of genre whether it be country or pop. Everything she does causes a discussion. There are endless think pieces, opinion columns, discussions about how her choices reflect on race, power, capitalism, feminism, women in media, etc etc etc. It seems absolutely insane to say she is not culturally resonant. In a lot of ways popular culture in America has revolved around her since that fateful night when Kanye snatched the mic. She has become a living embodiment of American culture and all its neuroses whether it be race relations or feminism. 1

"Biggest since...". SINCE. That implies that she is indeed NOT bigger than him. The question is who is the biggest pop star SINCE MJ in America. Which implies he is #1, the question is who is #2?
