Missing Titanic Submarine Megathread | All Passengers Presumed Dead

I feel bad for the people and their families, genuinely. But it really speaks to the hubris of the rich and the "startup unicorn" culture we live in. If there was literally one thing that could be learned from the most famous maritime disaster in history it's that being confident without proper forethought or planning will cost you.

It's kind of like Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos. She wooed investors and netted billions of dollars off an idea that sounded nice in theory but was physically impossible. The simplicity of the story is designed to make us so impressed that these geniuses could come up with it even when it sounds absurd on its face ("just a prick of your finger can save you from a cancer diagnosis" / "we're controlling this submarine with just an off brand Xbox controller".)

there's nothing funny about this. I feel so bad for the young man who might die, and for his father who has to witness it in that confined space.

Yeah the jokes and Twitter memes about this while it’s still unfolding are really not sitting right with me. It’s a little too soon and it is not even in the past yet. Twitter is such a cesspool - everyone always making jokes trying to be edgy and looking for their next viral meme instead of being a decent person.

I feel terrible for the people on board. I’m sure they completely regret what they did now and I wouldn’t wish that kind of death on anyone. The sea is terrifying.

Does anyone know why they didn't just have a rope attached from the sub to the boat? I know it would need to be a really long rope to be two miles down but still. Wouldn't it prevent something like this from happening?

Not a megathread for this. This world, I can't :skull:

I'm honestly still having a hard time feeling any sympathy for these people. Being ultra-rich and ridiculously stupid is a lot. However, I do really feel bad for the 19yo son cause he probably was with his father for some Father's Day fun experience though. :monkey:

I spent years about the Titanic, the unexplored parts of the ocean, the different folklores, etc. It scares the **** out of me.

Megathread?

Since when are we preoccupied with the issues of rich people? The thought of dying in deep sea is harrowing but this is very much "reep what you sow" situation. Ships with refugees sink everyday in the Mediterranean, yet they never get any coverage in the media and even if they do it's nowhere near the scope of this.

Edit: somebody already said that anyway

Stop with the populism already- This isn't about them being rich, like if the news had come out on sunday that they had died the same day and recovered the bodies no one would've cared, the fuss is about the surreality and mistery of the story, the fact that they are possibly still alive trapped 4000 meters under water with the titanic and no one has found them yet, plus the morbid details of the story are the ones getting viral :skull:

Yeah i don't really care for that weirdo CEO and his billionaire buddy stuck in there. Bragging about the negligence and unsafeness for the sake of so-called innovation? Bye.

I’m talking about multi-billionaires, you know- the men on this submarine. Nobody can ethically obtain billions of dollars without underpaying and overworking many people. Yes, some wealthy people use their money for good, which is great. But a lot of bad needs to be done to make a billionaire a billionaire first. But they know, they can offset it with good media coverage on the good deeds they do once they’ve gotten that money. :rip: And why is Travis Scott here? Lord :bam:

Oh, if we're talking about multi-billionaires then yeah lmao, thats just unethical bullshit. Of course, its sweatshop labour turned into insane wealth. I wouldn't say Rih's done anything bad to be a billionnaire, her music was the launchpad for FB and her empire. But aside from her, I agree with you, I'm not even debating it lmao. Its all money that has been made off the backs of armies of hard workers, and then invested into assets etc that just compound their insane wealth to higher levels. Of course they can, "Billionnaire xyz donates xxx money to xxxx" - awwww, such a SAINT lmao. Its pocket change for them, but it boosts their profile. They're a "good" billionnaire. Its all one big joke. I'm not even hating cause there are some LEGIT incredible rich people out there doing amazing things, but you're right about the vast majority of these billionaires being nothing but everything you described. And, RE Travis Scott, he literally just launched a multi million dollar foundation for mental health and organisations in his hometown for scholarships and art education, look it up.

Yeah framing people paying attention to this fascinating story as “centering the rich” is silly. Everyone acknowledges that migrants drowning is a tragedy, but I don’t see the connection. Naturally this story is driving intrigue just because it’s connected to the most famous disaster ever which its story is now paralleling, the money and class dynamics, etc.

I don’t get people proudly proclaiming their lack of sympathy for this on the Internet. You could be the most privileged person on earth and I’d still feel bad for you if your tragic yet stupid endeavour ended in the painful death of you and your family.

The resentment from the online left is coming from the timing, mostly - the context being the 500+ migrants that died in a naval vessel sinking in the Mediterranean just days ago that's gotten a fourth of the coverage that this has.

omg seriously, these high horse posts... If y’all don’t like the thread, open your own thread.

Bottom line is this is the subject of interest for the NUMEROUS reasons already stated on the thread, and to some of us it’s interesting to see what will happen with this.

Jesus, is it so hard to just live and let live?

I wasn't really following this or seeing why it was such a big deal until last night.  For anyone still lost watch these short videos: Video 1, Video 2, Video 3

I can't believe these people paid $250k to get on that janky thing.  I thought surely it was at least the size of a FedEx/UPS truck with proper seating.  No, you literally sit barefoot, crisscrossed, and sardined on the floor because you can't stand or move around.  The thing has no GPS/radio communication and the sub is controlled by a $20 Logitech Bluetooth Gaming Controller, which has surely run out of battery power at this point.  These people are DEAD and will probably never get found.

The other theory is that the vessel may have imploded instantly due to extreme pressure, which would be ideal for the passengers since their death would be instant instead of slow and painful by running out of oxygen, food, and water.

There are many lessons to be learned here but i hope one of them is that maybe its time that the wreck stopped being a tourist attraction. The only people that should go to it should be professionals who know what they’re doing, using equipment that is designed specifically for those sorts of deep sea dives.

I’d love to see her with my own eyes, but I recognize that I have no reason or right to be there. At this point really the only reason someone should disturb her is to do research on the unique bacteria eating her, mapping the wreck, and monitoring her rate of decay.

At the end of the day there are are about 1300 people whose final resting place is that wreck and it feels wrong to make that a tourist destination, no matter how fascinated most of us are by her and their story. Visit for the science, not for the thrill.
