Cleanromantic Posted May 19, 2023 Posted May 19, 2023 The majority of Gaga's music is awful. The electropop music of the late 2000s and early 2010s is so bad and dated and the fact that most atrlers look at it positively reveals their absolute lack of taste. Rihanna and Dua Lipa are only successful because of their looks. Every other POP girl has some sort of talent to fall back on, but those two would be nothing without their beauty. 13 1 8
Bones Posted May 19, 2023 Posted May 19, 2023 Janet’s probably way better than Beyoncé, Tinashe, Chloe, Normani, Alicia, Ciara, Summer Walker, Janelle, Lauryn Hill, Whitney, the only woman who is actually able to live up to her is SZA in my opinion, I fear. (I know they’re in different realms all in all but that is still my opinion). 2 1 3
Wicked Posted May 20, 2023 Posted May 20, 2023 The current music scene is a result of over-correction of bully mentality that was the norm for decades. Now when someone is lazy or "bad" they get coddled instead of critiqued. This applies to all genres. 2 3

(and Summer Walker is a better lyricist imo) 1

The7thStranger Posted May 20, 2023 Posted May 20, 2023 Bad Blood is one of the worst pop songs ever released. Madonna hides behind ageism/sexism discussions to protect herself against legitimate criticism and concern for her well-being. The Beatles and the Beach Boys are, though important, supremely overrated and get too much credit over their contemporaries and predecessors. Discipline and 20 Y.O. are a good records. I've said it a million times, and I'll say it again: If we're going to cancel people like Azealia Banks and Kanye West, we need to cancel Eminem. He wrote and released an incredibly earnest murder fantasy about the mother of his own child. Britney's fans treat her like an infant instead of the adult that she is. They scream she needs love and support whenever she is criticized for odd or poor behavior, but then fire missiles at you if you even so much as express that she doesn't appear well and needs help. Help does not need to be a conversatorship or a loss of autonomy. It just means help. Americans need to listen more to music that comes from outside the English-speaking world and/or outside English-speaking media. Although I strongly dislike k-pop, I'm glad it's pushed people to listen to something outside their typical wheelhouse. A lot of criticism lobbied at Janet Jackson is rooted in racism. Stock-Aitken-Waterman–produced music has aged like milk. Their work was very repetitive, and I generally don't enjoy it. Katy Perry, whether you like her music or not, doesn't deserve the hatred she gets. People are truly nasty to her without good reason. You can still be a racist even if you like (insert name of POC performer). Justin Timberlake deserved every ounce of criticism he got for that second Superbowl performance. It was incredibly distasteful and a show of how he disrespects the artists who came before him (Janet and Prince). Lana's music is incredibly middle-of-the-road. Regardless of how involved in the songwriting process Beyoncé may or may not be on any given track, her albums can be absolutely excellent. She is, at the very least, a great curator of sound, and she knows how to put a record together. The way she contorts the music industry to her whim (the same way Taylor does) is impressive. Taylor Swift is Madonna's true successor. Nobody else even comes close. 3 1 7

Heirloom Posted May 21, 2023 Posted May 21, 2023 Sometimes I hate how overtly-pretentious some of these alt-pop girlies (yeah looking at you Robyn and Sky Ferreira). Like did it really need years to figure the production choices for Honey? That’s why I adore the brashness and the attitude from Charli or Ellie Goulding. Be honest, after all you’re writing pop music not some orchestral piece of music.
