vale9001 Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 According to one of the most followed tracking source in the industry (box office pro) The little Mermaid is set to open with 70-90M on the first weekend and 235-305M total. This would be definitely worst than 192M for The Lion King, 174M for Beauty and the Beast and even 91M for Aladdin. Is this a disappointing prediction or it's ok? I think the 90M - 305M even if under the expectations would be good anyway, while a 70-235M would be in the "really disappoitingg zone" for a project like this. What do you think about it?. https://www.boxofficepro.com/long-range-box-office-forecast-disneys-the-little-mermaid/
MadonnasBoyfriend Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 It will have a big opening weekend then fade into obscurity and forgotten
FightForTanas Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 I dont know but Im going to go see it and I havent liked any live action Disney movie since Aladdin. Im excited.
shyboi Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 i think it will actually exceed expectations it have everything to be a major box office hit, the nostalgia, Halle, the music, great actors, etc.

I think in 2018-2019 a 130-140M opening was possible, now seems very out of the reach. The genre fatigue could be here. Edited April 28, 2023 by vale9001
CarCAL22 Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 I think they are lowballing this prediction as most people will. I don't see this opening with less than $80 million. My bets are much closer toa round $100 million zone. Despite some of the negative attitudes around this (mostly racism) I think there is a large group of people that will show up for this. After opening weekend, it'll depend on word of mouth and reviews so we will see.
V$. Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 This is likely to be the biggest movie for women and girls of all ages in May, which should allow it to open over Memorial Day weekend with $125 million or more over the four-day holiday. https://www.goldderby.com/feature/may-2023-box-office-preview-1205411094/
Gossip_Boy Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 I think it’ll do similar numbers to Aladdin domestically but underperform overseas. I see a Wakanda Forever-esque split.
unclefloprry Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 This is gonna flop in the international box office.
CaptainMusic Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 Ariel being black will affect box office in many countries as we’ve all seen the backlash If it does those numbers or more I’d consider it a success, but I am expecting it to underperform
Alaska. Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 I don't want racists to win so I hope it has a decent box office performance. But after this one, I hope the rest of the live action remakes flop into oblivion so we can spend a decade or two without more uninspired trash.
Trent W Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 (edited) I think a lot of people will support it, it will over-perform in terms of how the industry is lowballing and the low expectations it has. It will do around Aladdin numbers in the US, idk about International tho, could go either way, if it succeeds in the US it could have a positive effect. I do think sadly this would be way way bigger if someone like emma watson, emma stone or the likes would just dye the red hair as a main character. Edited April 28, 2023 by Trent W
cockatoo Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 I wish Halle the best but I don't think I'm the only one who's tired of these live action remakes. Come up with something new I beg
99sandthe2000s Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 Yes, a debut under 100+ million would absolutely be a disappointment but the numbers in OP are a conservative estimate based on the reactions of weirdo racists and the disappointed "redheads" who've somehow lost their animated icon (). I definitely think the numbers won't be as high as typical live-action box offices but we can only hope that it has good word of mouth and some of the clips will go viral to help boost the numbers, I expect minority groups to be a significant part of the viewing audience + parents and children. I agree that its international box office will be a challenge but it will definitely see moderate success with a global peak of 750-850 million at the end of its theatrical run.
Johnny Jacobs Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 Unfortunately the rasicm is going to be shown in the BO.. I think that if they brought a white actress with red hair and resembles the movie would have done twice as good. Shame.
nadiamendell Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 It just doesn't look good and people are getting tired of Disney rehashing the same movies over and over again.
UnusualBoy Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 The numbers seem ok but I do really think Disney need to stop all these live actions and come up with new ideas.

pika Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 (edited) The movie looks incredibly bad and there’s a lack of hype for this outside of Ariel being black and Halle’s vocal performance. Everything from set design, costume design, character design, lighting, cinematography, trailers, replications of known scenes, etc have been panned. There’s only so many times people can put the blame on racism before it’s acknowledged that this doesn't have qualities of being a good movie. Aladdin and The Lion King prevailed despite this, but it was during a time that Disney was at a much higher prestige. The pandemic took a lot away from them and I don’t think this will be the movie to make a recovery. Edited April 28, 2023 by pika

Asia and Most of Europe won't tune in; I would be devastated for Halle. All this for the movie to flop and then the draggings and thinkpieces because of it :(
Schami66 Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 Why are the people asking for new Disney movies not watching the new Disney movies? It's not like they only released live-action adaptions in the last few years. It's all there.
Orsay Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 Good Disney live action remakes are ALL horrible. No one should pay for that ****

This is categorically false. Early critic reactions have been across the board raves. People complained about the lack of colour, only for there to be a sh*t tonne of colour in other scenes. People who have actually seen the film have been raving.
