Little Dark Age Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 the second half is great but still a big step down from DC

Stimulus Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 I was hoping for this album to have a stronger concept or backstory that made Janelle Monáe's earlier albums so compelling. Or have more songs that showcase the full range of her vocals. I get that she wants to separate from her android persona, but compared to her earlier works, the lyrics on this album just don't feel like they have as much thought put into them. It's not a bad album, but I just expect more from Janelle Monáe.
FightDragonsWithMe Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 The Album is great my only issue is it's too short 1
scenekiller Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 A boring basic waste of time. She’s so much better than all of this mess
Born to Run Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 This isn’t bad at all? The nerve of some to call this her Solar Power
KatyPrismSpirit Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 2 minutes ago, Born to Run said: This isn’t bad at all? The nerve of some to call this her Solar Power It wasnt even meant as an insult. Its just in the sense that this is a toned down summer vibe album after a huge masterwork project. And the fact that it comes after a long break.
wraith Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 Let's hear a lil bit more buzz for Water Slide. What a bop
Theshigo Washidu Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 It's a decent album, albeit a bit too long tho.
Jtyoung Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 So I am giving this my first listen and on Float she just basically copies Drake lyrics? "Swear I just had an epiphany, it cost my fifty at Tiffany's." - Hype "I just had several epiphanies, over some breakfast at Tiffany's." - Float Even the flow is exactly the same, I went online expecting to see that she used the song or had overlapping writers, but this was straight from Drake's song.
Mikeymoonshine Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 Nah this is her Solar Power lol tho I liked Solar Power and I liked this. It's a summer album I might listen to at like the gym or something it's not close to her others in terms of creativity and uniqueness but it isn't bad either.
wxvii Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 Really solid album but wayyy too short. She should’ve added another minute or so to A Dry Red 1
thankfulforkelly Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 I think it’s a strong album, even if it’s not on DC’s level. Champagne **** is my favourite, I just wish it wasn’t awkwardly split into two tracks
dooart Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 this is aoty material for me. Such a great body of work, Janelle never disappoints. It differs from her other albums but this is still a 10/10 just like the others
Abracadabra Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 I was so hyped for the Grace Jones collab to then find out it's a 35 second interlude
humbz Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 I didn’t expect to like the album that much. even tho I’m a huge janelle fan, the first single was really disappointing, but the rest of the album is so sexy, vivid, groovy and luscious. I just couldn’t resist. it’s new for her and I’m digging.

Nicki had a similar line on the 5 Star Chick Remix ”I just had an epiphany, I need to go to Tiffany’s”
ATRL Moderator wehavetostan Posted June 11, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted June 11, 2023 there’s a couple fun songs here but it’s easily the least memorable album in her discography
KatyPrismSpirit Posted June 11, 2023 Posted June 11, 2023 This is low key my favorite album of the year along with Kelela's 'Raven'. This is on constant repeat
EarStyle Posted June 11, 2023 Posted June 11, 2023 This is so good. Gave it the car test yesterday. 1
Aqua Posted June 11, 2023 Posted June 11, 2023 Came expecting the worst after seeing the mixed reactions here but holy **** this is gunning for my fave album of the year so far. So rich, layered and sexy The Rush, Phenomenal and Paid in Pleasure are my top 3 so far.
