Saint Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 really liked this on first listen like it felt so happy, free and horny as hell but sooo good

One of my favs of the year actually. In general, I haven't heard too many amazing albums this year lol. Maybe all of the heavy hitters are being saved for the back half of the year. Yeah the production is really lovely. It's just jarring hearing her sing about nothing but sex when her last few albums have had some strong political messages. She seems like she's in a really good place which is nice tho. And ugh tell me about it. I'm in desperate need of some pop excellence.

Janelle is just going for sounds that don’t fit her talents that’s really it. Like if she incorporated afrobeats and dance hall sounds into some sorta high concept heady project I would Stan. She just can’t pull off chill and relaxed vibes.
campelo Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 This is what I imagine plays at a reception or elevator of a white people resort in the Caribbean 2 1
worldwide angel Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 reading the first few pages and seeing everyone dog janelle the age of pleasure is proof that you can "sell out" and still make amazing music. from front to back, the album is incredible. truly one of the best of the year. 7
alejandreaux Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 Lipstick Lover was so minimal and understated that i was unsure if she was gonna be able to pull it out this time around. now the album is out and it has taught me to NEVER doubt the power of her artistic vision EVER again how she managed to pack a whole album’s worth of hooks, textures, memorable lyrics, musical dynamics, etc. into 30 minutes is beyond me, and it all just zips by so effortlessly. this woman just CANNOT MISS musically 2
pisuke Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 (edited) I like it, but it's way too short. It needs 15 minutes more at least. It feels more like an EP. Edited June 9, 2023 by pisuke 1

Like even Pynk sent a strong message despite all of the sexual references lol. I feel like this album is lacking in that.
KatyPrismSpirit Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 I love this more and more on each listen. My only remark is that the transitions are a bit too much. Makes it hard to listen to individual songs and in turn lacks memorability

Noodles Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 Loved my first listen Janelle is Janelle and y'all will put respect on her name. The album is very anti-Janelle, as in it's not the bombastic maximalist Janelle we're used to. But one of these days ATRL will learn that not having big hooks and huge choruses =/= bad music. Not her magnum opus (I doubt she was trying to create that anyway) but it's sitting pretty and cozy in her immaculate discography iktr. She tried something new, and she succeeded. I will however see her in hell though for the lengths of these tracks 1
unino Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 she didn't do anything spectacular than her previous album but still a solid one. float is really good opener

unino Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 she just took a different direction this time which is not deemed as strong as her previous. and she just can't be good at everything so i'll just enjoy this and hope she would be back with more serious works later.
perfectillusion204 Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 I really liked this. Released at the perfect time for summer. She's an artist, let her experiment from her usual sound! This is such a fun and care-free vibe album that'll put you in a good mood. I think the interludes could've just been attached to the previous song since they all go together. So I really see it as 11 tracks. The only song I don't like it Only Have Eyes 42. Everything else is pretty good.
mylicious Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 I did not like this. As a huge fan of Dirty Computer, this didn't quite hit me as hard. I do get her though, she wants to have fun with her music and that's fine and cute, maybe some songs will stick with me the more I listen.
rebeltwat Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 (edited) I've listed a few times now and it's a good project but probably won't make it past the next couple of months. Definitely feels more like a mixtape and it's slightly disappointing to have waited over 5 years with this as a return. Edited June 9, 2023 by rebeltwat
Raw Honey Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 Wish I saw what some of you guys are seeing lol, this is bad.
Alex Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 oh yeah a 5 year comeback for this and it being from Janelle Monae is obviously enough to put most people off who were expecting another serious project but this is her Caprisongs moment if that makes sense
justin. Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 This is actually really solid. I just wish some songs had been lengthened (Haute, A Dry Red) and that Champagne **** and Black Sugar Beach were just one song. Overall, a really cute vibe for the summer.

Glad I'm not alone.
Guy12345 Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 A very enjoyable listen. maybe not as strong as her previous three, but still really solid and in its own lane in a way.
