JoeAg Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 listen I STAN Kelly, have for almost two decades tbh so none of you come at me with considering that I'm shading her or something this ain't surprising in the slightest her past two non-christmouse eras have been sorely mishandled by her label. Love So Soft and Medicine could've been huge hits if handled correctly. Invincible was screaming Hot AC hit, and Dance with Me and Nostalgic could've been cute hits. Heartbeat Song was such a blatant ripoff of The Middle to the degree where it should've been completely scrapped from every edition of that album. jeez... also the show success was obviously never gonna translate to commercial success on a breakup anthem. on top of all this, both singles are SUPER lowkey melodically compared to instant earworms like My Life Would Suck without You or Love So Soft. idk. I think the era could be saved with a cute earworm hit, but in terms of midtempo ballads, those ain't gonna smash quite as easily
If U Seek Amy Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 Honestly for tracks that are trying to sell on the drama of a divorce, I feel they are average to failure at best in that goal. This is coming from a Kelly Clarkson big time and long time fan too. As regular pop songs they are okay though. Mine especially. Me she has done Me 500 times before and we are tired and instantly did not save. Mine is a bit different, but still pretty safe Kelly territory and not a big step up. Lyrically they do sound like divorce lyrics technically. But production wise and vocal delivery wise you don't really feel the intense emotions she is trying to portray. It feels like she is going through the motions of singing another generic breakup pop song that she really isn't feeling, even if she does technically sound nice. Piece by Piece was a much more successful song because her vocal delivery, the production, and lyrics all came together and felt actually emotionally impactful and like she really felt what she was singing. I expected to really feel these songs like a Because of You, Piece by Piece, or Maybe. Instead we got All I Ever Wanted levels of authenticity emotionally. I am really hoping these are the label forced singles and the there is more on the album. Otherwise, I think Kelly needs to stick to TV/covering songs. Her artistic creativity is way past its peak and she is just continuously doing the same thing at this point we aren't interested in.
Glamthony Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 OP: i think it's her granny/old lady/friend's mom personality. If she wants to ride the pop star train, she needs to deliver something intersting.

Into The Void Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 She hasn't transitioned to the streaming era that's all. Love So Soft wasn't a hit either but it doesn't matter she doesn't need hits at this stage in her career. Mine is fantastic too
ATRL Moderator Bloo Posted April 21, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted April 21, 2023 Kelly is turning 41 next week, has two kids, and two other jobs. She is at a point in her life that she probably couldn't give less of a f*** about charts at this point. I'll admit, I'm not the biggest fan of mine and me. They both feel a bit meh for me. I enjoy them, but I don't have urge to listen to them like I do with most artists I love (and Kelly is the artist I've stanned the most in my life, for context). So, yeah, she isn't going to make the moves that work in the streaming era (e.g., neither song have a proper music video) and she's 20+ years into her career. She's naturally going to fade. People need to stop having ridiculous expectations for legacy artists.

Nah Kelly has a good 5-6 hard-core stans here
toxicgenie Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 She better milk her show and promote that album.

I was expecting more lyrically from the songs. I was expecting a Because of You, a Sober, a Maybe, a Behind These Hazel Eyes, a Piece By Piece, something. But, "I don't need to need somebody when I got me" is basically, "You know the bed feels warmer sleeping here alone" repackaged and we have heard that message from Kelly sooooo many times over (with arguably with more stylistic and original lyrics). So, neither mine or me feel all that novel. mine is a bit different production-wise for Kelly. The rhythm switch is nice but it feels reminiscent of the superior switch-up in drivers license. So, yeah, it just doesn't make too much of a mark. They're fine, serviceable songs but they don't leave much of an impression unless you're just listening for vocals. The vocal performance on both is great and she delivered there. But that's the only memorable aspect of them for me.
samsclubPRESENTSavam Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 I would still like another breakaway. I know she doesn't like those years because of clive and dr luke and had the desire to make something less palatable, but everything about that era slapped. it was on point.
MotoPapi Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 As horrible as this sounds she is older now, also she doesn’t have the look of a pop star. Even Adele had to lose weight.
GrandeVersace Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 Let's be honest. She's 40+ female and not pretentious at all. Those characteristics sadly don't translate to sales. Teenagers only use "what's hot right now".

The difference is that Adele was engaged with the promotion cycle and the hype of the album. Kelly doesn't go on social media (though, she will do lives through her show occasionally); she doesn't record music videos really anymore; she doesn't cater to TikTok trends; and she also isn't the type of person to try to build up her image to look cool and hip (which I actually admire about her). And, that's fine. She's about to turn 41, she has two children, she has two full-time jobs via The Voice and her talk show, and she has already left her mark on the music industry. She doesn't need to replicate her commercial peak.

JustHoran Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 I was SO excited for this album as I love Kelly, but the singles are very disappointing. Me isn't good at all, and Mine is just OK but nothing special? Her last Christmas album (the sad one) was SO good so I had high hopes this divorce album would be incredible, but I have doubts now if those are the best songs to be the lead?

It’s just the way the music business works now. She can still do tours for her fan base a lot of artists who are not topping the charts make good money touring the country. Plus with the 2 children I doubt she wants to chase hits and do all that til tok/Spotify promo that is necessary.
KCFan2014 Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 (edited) She literally let her label choose what they wanted and released 2 at once at that. Sang it once she didht even bother to promote Did anyone expect her singles to smash she's 41 Queen is the biggest solo female talk show host Let's wait for the album and see Edited April 21, 2023 by KCFan2014
