Catching Fire truly is the gold-standard. Love its predecessor, but the sequel elevates every element of the story seamlessly WHEW.

 

As an avid Scream fan, I'm inclined to support OP's opinion. I do think Scream 2 is just as good as the original, but I still personally prefer 1. 

 

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again (one of my all time favorite films, they really popped off with that one )

The Dark Knight, Empire Strikes Back, X2, Winter Soldier (ugh underrated), Last Jedi (don't kill me), BEFORE SUNSET are all contenders too.
