It's not really the same thing. Ariel is a fantasy creature. Lilo & Nani are explicitly indigenous Hawaiian descent. This actress is White and Filipino as far as I'm aware and doesn't even look like her.

 

I'm not losing sleep over it (like who actually cares), and I'll leave the outrage or lackthereof, to actual people of indigenous Hawaiian descent. But it is predictable that a POC role, particularly one of AAPI heritage, would be half white (and visibly so).

Like i don’t want to downplay the potential colorism at play here but also find it hard to believe Disney or whoever would blatantly hire this girl as a dig or to be problematic, especially with the current environment we are in and with the recent Ariel backlash. I just can’t help but feel bad for the young actress who was excited for her first big role and now is probably terrified to even be in the movie/promote etc. leave it to Twitter to take it to the most extreme levels though

Also not some comparing Ariel who is a mythical sea-dwelling creature to Nani who is based on the real experiences of Native Hawaiian women. Worms for brains.

I do agree the prerequisites put on casting now are probably difficult to meet but since these two are unknowns and I doubt this production will really need big acting chops they should have found people more accurate to the cartoon, because he looks nothing like David.
