A note to those who did K-pop from Gateau:

Spoiler

Sooooo here's the problem with kpop as an entry: its american pop with korean lyrics. "neither of the cultures can be North American" doesn't just mean they can't be american citizens. it means i'm literally looking for music that is totally independant of the american musical hegemony. for example, rihanna is from barbados. would you say that her music isn't americanized just because she isn't a citizen of the US? no. no sane person would. its not really a cultural fusion as much as just a proxy of subverting the "no americans" rule. And that's not me being an uneducated hater, that's coming from the POV of a longtime kpop stan. korea does have their own way of making melodies, singing style, and im not even just talking traditional instruments. but none of those are present in these songs.

bowdown

Spoiler

these are american pop songs with some generic latin flavoring. and none are good. saurry. its truwe! love chungha but easily one of her weakest. and i definitely wouldn't call one of the most popular songs of the year in 'antifragile' obscure...

missed points on obscurity for sure. hit that drum is a bop and boca is listenable tho! i wouldnt say any of these are very... korean?

When I thought of this category, I know one of the only 'contemporary' takes on it that would hold onto the authentic korean identity I was looking for would be found in trot music, so great idea on your part. love battery is literally one of the most popular trot songs of all time, and I had guessed someone would use the baby vox song in one of the playlists as well. but the songs you used ARE good and frankly you're a head and shoulders above every other korean entry so far SOO. Great for you because there's five of 'em here!

Spoiler

somehow this ended up being even more obvious than bowdown's entry. like you did a google search "latino kpop songs" and came up with this. I can't really give you many points for objectivity because objectively.. none of the songs on the list were obscure, they were essentially american pop with korean lyrics and a few spanish guitars. for subjectivity in terms of good songs... thanks for senorita ig

Stevie

Spoiler

I'm not sure how you saw the words "culturally american" and "obscure" and thought that I would react well to "UK electro pop", because frankly its literally a genre born and devloped in the US, simply lifted to another country. I'm looking for what makes UK music DIFFERENT from america, which wasn't really displayed in your choices. I don't think UK was a good place to go since the british and american media are so intertwined, with america having a huge edge in terms of musical ingenuity. like mabel lit rally is singing in an american accent... that's how entrenched in american culture they are. honestly if you had four entries like electricity and shepherd sounds then I would have said "you know what, I see what he was trying to do here". But then you had to give me On My Mind and Don't Call Me Up, both of which are the exact antithesis of what I was looking for, with their very faint traces of afrobeats, widespread popularity, and american thumbprint.

Spoiler

I think you really misunderstood the assignment? There is nothing korean about the bollywood songs. PTT just has the overdone kshmr sample packs. every single one of those songs is pretty popular. perhaps not PTT but loona is still quite a well known group and its their most successful song.

Spoiler

I like the african delivery, structure, and intrumentals, but my problem here is there's really nothing french about them except the lyrics. which like, ya know, it counts a little bit I guess but not really what I was hoping for. Its essentially the same issue I had with the kpop entries except the african influences were used REALLY authentically here instead of the generic layovers of the others. that's pretty much what saved you. if anything there's more black american influence on these tracks than french lol, which kinda defeated the prupose of the 'no culturally american' rule. you took songs from literally... the most popular black musicians in france? nothing about these are obscure lol.

Really loved Lavender Haze into Pray You Catch Me, the transition felt smooth and coherent with the story I asked for. Caught Out There was my least favorite moment, I feel like you could’ve definitely found a better song to use as the transition from Pray You Catch Me into Ruin My Life, which was an excellent closer to the story with toxicity and lack of self esteem.

___________________________

Delirious

Spoiler

This is a mess honestly. I specified in my prompt that I wanted a story about a RELATIONSHIP where you took us from being in love, to finding out the infidelity and then the coping. First of all, Josslyn, clearly states that it’s not even about a committed relationship and it dives right into the infidelity, then you went to the coping with Shoutout to My Ex, then you went to Pandora’s Box and I can’t find any sort of correlation to a story or anything with Shoutout to My Ex, it’s extremely vague and it’s just there. And then you finish it up with I Don’t Believe You which is also extremely confusing because it’s just about a damaged relationship. These 2 songs after Shoutout to My Ex make zero sense and there’s no story here so this was a huge fail to me.

___________________________

fais_2311

Spoiler

This is a very similar situation to Delirious, maybe just not as bad. You simply grabbed 4 songs about infidelities and threw them in a playlist when that’s clearly not what I asked for, I wanted the songs to tell a story and have a coherence but these 4 songs all talk about the same thing.

___________________________

kittenish

Spoiler

I really like this playlist! I did kinda feel like the transition from Call Me Maybe into Pray You Catch Me was a bit too jarring because they’re like extreme opposites, maybe you could’ve found a song that transitioned a bit more smoothly into Pray You Catch Me, but other than that it’s a very solid playlist, it does tell a story that makes sense and Kill Bill as a closer was amazing.

Stevie

Spoiler

I feel like sonically all of your songs work very well together, but lyrically the story is not as smooth as I would’ve liked. Drunk On Love is kinda too vague, I wish it was more specifically talking about a relationship rather than herself. Then Stupid Girls doesn’t really feel a lot about infidelity, it’s kinda more of a “men ain’t ****” anthem, which is similar but not quite what I wanted. By this point there’s not much of a story going on until Caught Out There and All Night which do tie together nicely, but overall it was missing that main storyline that I wanted to see about a relationship going through love, infidelity and coping.

___________________________

Taeyeon

Spoiler

Honestly you ate, the Gracie song felt like such a perfect mood setter about the whole relationship, then Say My Name is a perfect song about the finding out moment, which flows very nicely into New Rules showcasing the struggle of knowing what’s good for you and wanting to go back, which then ties back perfectly to All Night, I picked up the phone cause he was calling drunk and alone and now we’re making love all night long, damn.

Spoiler

The artist choices… you ain’t slick. I’m obsessed. Angel Baby is a great tone setter obviously, it’s very innocent and then How Long gagged me because it ties so well into Angel Baby, she’s more hurt than angry and that works out sooo smoothly for the story. Then I love how you used deja vu here because it’s not really about infidelity but you used it in a way that makes complete sense with the story you’re telling and Look At Her Now was a great closer, and the only playlist where it ends in knowing your worth and not going back which I also appreciate.

I Listen to Singers.

___________________________

bowdown

Spoiler

whew!! Your choices are all stacked! You have the vocal holy trinity (Whitney/Mariah/Celine) and Bey who is arguably the best vocalist in modern pop. I love every song on this list and I really like that you went straight for the classics. Whitney/Bey/Mariah are three of my fav singers of all time therefore, it suited my taste really well. Celine is a vocal legend and I absolutely love that song. My only critique is that this playlist is a little predictable and safe, like you could have chosen different songs from the same artists and be a bit more unexpected but still on theme however all of these choices are definitely on theme and I enjoy this playlist, it’s excellent! A slay! All of these women are A-tier vocalists.

___________________________

Delirious

Spoiler

Well this was interesting. Leona Lewis is such a phenomenal vocalist, I was blown away by the vocal performance on this song, undeniably a great choice. Christina is another heavy hitter vocally and this song is a great example, one of the best on this album too. This is where this playlist gets a bit odd. I love Ellie Goulding so much and to me she has a really nice voice and I do like the vocal performance on this because she sounds really beautiful however, I think this is mostly because of her whimsical tone rather than her actual vocal prowess, I think Explosions would have been a better option to me personally for this theme but I do enjoy her vocals in this song, I just don’t know if I would choose Ellie for a theme like this since her tone is the most prominent thing for her. Bated Breath is an excellent song, I love GODNASHE! I am not sure if I would have chosen her for this theme though, I don’t see her as a powerhouse vocalist though she’s good and competent vocally, similar to Ellie, I think they’re both B tier vocalist whereas I wanted A+ singers here, regardless it’s not like you chose awful singers because they’re still pretty good. A fairly good effort.

fais_2311

Spoiler

I think this is a really well-crafted playlist. We Belong Together is such a bop, she sounds really good on it, I do believe a choice like Fly Like A Bird or My All would fit better here, like I don’t think choosing this style of song is the best you could have done for Mariah since she has much better options with the focus on vocals but again Mariah is one of the best singers of all time so automatically any song by her fits really well! Gaga is a good vocalist, sometimes she tends to get very nasally which I usually dislike but INLA is one of her best ballads, I cried when I heard this in the movie, I think because it reminded me of Whitney, it’s such a beautiful song and she sang the hell out of this song, beautiful choice. Listen is a YES YES YES YES! No complaints, a career highlight vocally, one of the hardest songs to cover, like even many amazing vocalists tend to struggle when covering this which showcases the power of this song, whew! Celine’s song is a masterclass in singing, just excellent. Very good job!

I did not expect a playlist in full kpop, your playlist is another one that shocked me. I am a casual kpop fan but I wouldn’t call myself a kpop stan so I am a bit surprised that you did not mix this with some soul/R&B, even some K-R&B would have been cute. Regardless, I know kpop groups are diverse and the members have different roles and purposes so it would be tough to find a song that’s fully powerful vocals. Wendy is one of the best vocalists in kpop so I think that RV song was a great choice. I do think Mamamoo is one of the most vocally strong kpop groups, especially Solar and Wheein, but they’re all great vocally. Taeyeon is also a great singer. I am not sure if I am sold by the Twice song for this theme but I see the vision. Regardless, I think you should have chosen more ballad driven kpop songs for this round since kpop tends to be very production heavy which distracts from the vocal performances, regardless I do think you did a fairly decent job and there are some strong vocal performances by some of the women.

Spoiler

Firstly, I love all the songs on this playlist, therefore you nailed the taste aspect for me. Thematically, Vision of Love is undeniably the strongest selection on this playlist. Mariah’s rent was due when she recorded this chile whew! It still gives me shivers when I hear it. Whitney is the best vocalist of all time imo. Thus, any Whitney choice would be a serve, I do think though that she has songs with a more commanding vocal performance, she has countless ballads HOWEVER, I do think the vocal performance is quite strong simply because she can sing the Alphabet and slay! Rolling in The Deep and If I Ain’t Got You are two of my fav adult contemporary singles of all time, just pure soul and passion. Despite these songs being undeniable emotional songs, I do think both of these queens are more tone type of singers rather than solely vocal prowess. Yes they are quite good vocally, but I do think similar to Ellie, they’re on the B tier type of singers and I really wanted A+ performances from excellent vocalists. However, they did sing really well on these songs and I do think it’s good. Your playlist is good. ATP I am just nitpicking everyone.

Spoiler

I have to say, your approach to the playlist is the most unique. It’s clear that pop music isn’t you go to because all of these options shocked me. Memory being a musical theatre song is brilliantly on theme because the female vocalist sang her heart out, sonically it isn’t my usual taste but I am a huge supporter of vocal prowess and I really appreciated that. Total Eclipse of the Heart, a classic that I like, poprock isn’t my favourite sound but I do enjoy her vocal performance on this song. I would not say it’s the ultimate best because someone else (cough, miss Dion) would sing this better but she gets the job done. With Looker, honestly, I do think this is pretty average vocally, a lot of pop-rock woman singers sound exactly like this, I am not gagging, not the biggest fan of the song either but it’s cute. Black Box, love this! Definitely my favourite choice in this playlist, she definitely has vocal prowess and is showcasing her vocal talent all over the song with her various riffs and runs. This playlist was definitely fascinating, definitely giving you credit for not going typical but I do think some change in sound to my taste would have made this better and only two vocalists wowed me.

THANK YOUUUU for sending THEE Jazmine Sullivan. I was so mad scrolling these playlists and not seeing her! Like come on! A vocalist! I thought you would send Let It Burn but Need U Bad is also an exceptional vocal performance, Jazmine is truly one of the most underrated vocalists of all time, like queen is always singing her ass off! The Greatest Love Of All, WHEW btch! One of my fav Whitney songs of all time, this is another masterclass in singing, her rent was due! This song gives me comfort and moves my heart, her performance is top notch. Excellent choice. NOT Vanishing, I am so happy you went with one of her less mainstream songs because this song speaks to the soul and is absolutely chilling with her vocal performance, you ate this! Now, I love me some MJB! Be Without You is one of the best R&B singles of all time and a classic, however I do think similar to some of the other choices in other playlists, MJB isn’t what I have envisioned for this theme, yes she’s very competent vocally and gives a good performance but I needed exceptional vocals and she’s is simply a B tier vocalist. Regardless, it’s still a good vocal performance. This playlist is very good. Well done.

Man Vs.

___________________________

bowdown

Spoiler

Fighter: Sonically, I like this song a lot. In regards to fitting the theme, I think it’s mostly there. The song is a lot more about how Christina has internalized this interpersonal conflict in order to be stronger rather than solely in the Man vs. Man vein.

Body Dismorphia: This song kinda sucks, but it’s 100% on theme for what I was looking for.

Mother’s Daughter: I love this song, I think its commentary on society is highly watered down and nothing special. Yeah Miley plays by her own rules but so what?

Flood: This song also kinda sucked, and I say that as someone who likes Alt Rock. This is a bit more “weather as a metaphor” than I wanted, but it’s mostly on theme.

Cohesion: I think Fighter and Mother’s Daughter fit together decently well. The other two feel less in place but I can see the argument.

___________________________

Delirious

Spoiler

Choose Your Battles: I think choosing a song where the narrator is explicitly talking about not wanting to battle is a slightly annoying choice, but there’s an obvious grappling and interpersonal struggle that makes this work well enough. The song is whatever.

Different: Another kinda mid song. It fits the brief but could use a lot more detail regarding what Maggie is grappling with.

Ugly: The song is cute enough, but this could easily just be interpreted as a song about bullies rather than society at large.

In This Together: This sounds like if someone said “make a song about climate change, but make it ambiguous enough to where we can pretend like it’s not if we want to pass it off as a generic pop song”.

Cohesion: They’re all cohesive in the sense that they’re all boring

___________________________

fais_2311

Spoiler

Praying: Much like Fighter, these veers off the interpersonal fight and gets into how they’ve grown from it internally. Great song otherwise.

Love Me More: It fits. It also puts me to sleep.

If Our Love Is Wrong: This fits I guess but it’s annoyingly vague. What is this? A gay romance, an interracial romance, an interfaith couple? Say something explicit.

Who’ll Stop The Rain: I had to listen to a live version of this. Decent song. I think this does the “weather as metaphor” in a way that still could be read literally.

Cohesion: The middle two songs are solidly cohesive.

Misery Business: A strong choice.

Cohesion: meh

Leave!: Yes pandering. I do love this song. There is some tension going on in regard to VV trying to get her friend to see the light, but I wouldn’t say there’s enough of a conflict here tbh.

I Blame Myself: This works for me.

Alright: Kendrick isn’t my fav but yeah sure this works

Gimmie Shelters: Works on a couple of levels. I’m cool with this

Cohesion: not really

Blonde Seduction: The Gracie Ellen Freewood Story

Spoiler

This Macy song is a cute start to the story tbh, I kinda love it and then Faith Hill.. I'm a southern gay, so I love Faith, another good choice and fun for the story I wanted. Theme wise, this Green Day song works but sonically, not for me, also uninspired because someone else sent it too :eli: But you recover greatly for this last song, a true guilty pleasure of mine, Chic C'est La Vie is so bad it's good and I've been addicted to it for years, and the fact it's from the Countess, perfect choice!

Spoiler

Amazing is cute, a little bland. Capital Letters is also cute and works in my mind for the story. Love the Keep On Dancin' choice, it checks taste and theme for me. Happily Ever After is fine but someone else chose it and I know it's just for the title, uninspired choice.

Such a flawless opening to this story, Love At First Sight is one of my favorite songs too, perfect choice. Shania is also amazing, as a southern gay, I love Shania and it's a very popular wedding song. DONE. is a really good choice too, I've actually met them and have this album signed :cries: so it's a good personal connection for me and fits the theme. Million Dollar Baby is one of my favorite Ava songs, so you slayed.

I feel like you don't know me at all Kittenish :cries: Theme wise these all fit, but my personal taste.. it's a no, cute, no, and a maybe. The fact that you sent 2 songs that other people sent too based of their titles :eli: I do like that you sent a song from a musical though, that is the closest to pandering to my taste, even though idk this particular musical.

I like that your playlist has a theme, mostly. ABBA is hit or miss for me, but I adore Shirley Bassey, what an amazing vocal performance. My Heart Will Go On is a song I like but I said no sad songs for the funeral! But I guess it's both sad and hopeful. Marilyn is a girl of the same cloth as Gracie, Gracie would definitely stan this choice, and I personally think it's a fun choice.

Taeyeon

Spoiler

Love Mine, my favorite Slayyyter song and a great choice for my theme. Stars Are Blind is so cute and fits my theme perfectly too, I can see Gracie and Thurston dancing to this at their wedding. Idk this Millionaires song but lyrically it is just what I wanted for post-funeral party. Idk this last song either but I was bopping and can envision Gracie slaying life to this song.

wish

Spoiler

You obviously stalked my last.fm but :jonny: I think I have 1500+ plays total of just these 4 songs :rip: Va Va Voom is so perfect for the theme to me, it fits Gracie so well. Angel is one of my favorite songs period, I can see Gracie singing this at karaoke to Thurston or at the wedding reception, as it's one of her favorite songs too. Stronger is Gracie putting on a fake brave yet sad face after he dies and moving on with dignity until the people aren't watching anymore and Good Time starts playing and Gracie starts spending.

I'm howling at your entire playlist. "Ridin' Solo" is such funny shade to Destiny's Child's second lead vocalist, and "Cardboard Box" is a brilliant callback to the Farrah luggage incident. Beyoncé was definitely more in her personality era then, so the sassy vibe works. The only problem is that these are all more recent songs. This could not have been an iTunes playlist made by Beyoncé back in 2003.

Delirious

Spoiler

An odd choice for Kelly, since as far as I'm aware, Beyoncé never tried to **** her. The Michelle pick works slightly better, even though it's about a romantic love, because the tone is sweet instead of sexual. I don't understand the LaTavia/LeToya song at all, because they were not on good terms at this time. Does Beyoncé even remember Farrah's name, let alone want to make things right with her? Unfortunately, this playlist is just off.

___________________________

fais_2311

Spoiler

All of these songs encapsulate Beyoncé's relationships to her group members well, though some of them feel like they come from different periods of her life. "When We Grow Up" makes me think of Beyoncé and Kelly as children, looking to their futures, while "I Forgive You" would be much later on, when she was finally ready to reconnect with LeToya and LaTavia. Also, why did you choose the "Glee" version of "I'll Stand By You"? At least the original would have given you two tracks that existed in 2003, which is more than most of these entr

Spoiler

Not sure why Michelle got "Best Friend" instead of Kelly. The LaTavia/LeToya and Farrah picks are very funny, even if the jokes don't go any deeper than the titles. A decent playlist overall, despite the fact that none of the songs were out when Beyoncé made her solo debut.

How in the hell is this Kandi mess a real song? Michelle deserved better! Most of these selections fit Beyoncé's relationships to her group members, though I don't quite understand the connection between "Google Me" and LaTavia/LeToya. I will always laugh at a Farrah bags joke.

Spoiler

I can tell the thought that went into this playlist. "Anytime You Need a Friend" feels like a song that Beyoncé and Kelly would have listened to growing up together. "Case of the Fake People" is a really smart deep cut for Farrah. I do have to tip the win to Stevie because his choices made more immediate sense. The logic for "Express Yourself" and "Graduation (Friends Forever)" isn't as readily apparent to me. But I do give you credit for actually finding songs that Beyoncé might have been jamming to in 2003.
